Last night there was video of a truck from one of the big Ukrainian grocery chains arriving in Kherson.   Life is slowly returning to normal.

Kherson is part of the area of Ukraine sometimes referred to as “Novo Rosiya,” or “New Russia.”  This area includes Odesa, Mykolayv, Kherson, Melitopol, and the cities along the Sea of Azov including Berdyansk and Mariupol.  Many of the pundits like to pontificate, ad nauseum, that people living in this part of are Russian speakers, therefore they support Russia.   Russia assured everyone that the results of the recent referendum, where 99.99% of the residents of Kherson support joining Russia, was an accurate reflection of the Public’s sentiments.   The videos speak for themselves.

It is likely that the Russian withdrawal from Kherson, combined with the fact that the Dnieper bridges were destroyed, means that Ukraine will acquire a large amount of “Lend Lease” heavy equipment from Russia, including large quantities of ammunition.   There are still Russians on the Right Bank who have changed into civilian clothes.    There may be other pockets, not to mention mines.

News From the Battlefield

The Female Sniper – I got an email from her this morning.   Once again, she thanks everyone who supported her and her comrades.   She said that while Kherson is great news, she is still concerned about progress, or lack thereof in Donetsk, primarily in front of Bakhmut.    There is a concern, that Russian troops who have escaped the Right Bank of the river could be redeployed to Donetsk, or even north of Kyiv.   In either case, the war isn’t over.

The Latest Denys points out that the territory on the Left Bank of the Dnieper, opposite Kherson where Russia is building defense lines, is very poor ground.   I have been there, and I agree.

The “desert” that Denys refers to is actually a national park that is designed to preserve a small example of the ancient steppe that covered much of what is now Southern Ukraine and Northern Crimea.   As one goes toward Crimea there are farming operations, including one where I’ve been that grows potatoes for sale at Fozzy, one of the largest grocery chains in Ukraine.  Some of the farms get surface irrigation, from the North Crimea Canal.    I agree with Denys, that the area between Kherson City and Crimea is not easily defensible and now, the roads connecting Ukraine with Crimea are within range of Ukrainian HIMERS.

Are Americans Pressuring Ukraine into Negotiating?

I don’t know the answer to this question, but it seems clear that there are those in the American Administration who like to think of themselves as puppeteers, with Ukrainians as the puppets.   For me, the following are critical and must be understood:

·        The United States and its Partners should give Ukraine everything it asks for.  By all means, the United States and its Partners should make sure deliveries are fully audited but, having satisfied themselves that all is in order, get out of the way.   Ukraine will drive Russia out of Ukraine.

·        The United States and its Partners must understand that Ukraine will keep fighting until the Russians are driven out of Ukraine.   If that wasn’t evident before the events in Kherson in the last 24 hours, it should be by now.  There will be no Ukrainian left behind; how can any Ukrainian president agree to do so and hope to stay in office?  Ancestors of Ukrainians who served in the OUN/UPA after the end of WW-II fought the former Soviet Union to a standstill up until the early 1950s, without any outside support.   This time, there are friendly countries on Ukraine’s western border who will continue to provide support.   For NATO, they will have a very nasty guerilla war on its hands on its eastern border.

All the talk about negotiations and ceasefires are meaningless unless Ukraine drives Russia out of its territory.   Neither the United States nor its Partners can pressure Ukraine into a conclusion short of this.  To me, this is a “given.”

14:29: Another exchange took place - 45 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were released, - said the head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak.
