Kherson City Liberated!
Video, taken today, from the Center of Kherson. No more words necessary.
Illya Ponomarenko of the Kyiv “Independent,” whom I consider to be the best combat reporter covering this war, wrote an article, entitled “How Russia’s Humiliating Defeat in Kherson Came to Be.” The article is attached as a pdf. Some additional thoughts:
· It appears that Ukkraine will get an additional trove of Russian armor, ammunition, and supplies, because the destruction of the Dnieper bridges will prevent movement of heavy equipment.
· The atrocities that took place in Irpin and Bucha, while horrific, may pale in comparison with the atrocities that may have taken place in Kherson City and surrounding areas. Kherson was occupied by Russia for over 8 months. Mariupol may well be at least one order of magnitude greater.
· What next? For Ukraine, the offensive with the greatest upside would be an attack south toward Melitopol, but such an undertaking also contains substantial risks for Ukraine as Russia is equally capable of looking at a map. If successful, a Ukrainian offensive toward Melitopol would have the following benefits:
o Possible entrapment of Russian forces that are gathered on the Left/East Bank of the Dnieper River opposite Kherson City.
o Cut off remaining ground access to Crimea.
o Set the stage for liberation of cities along the Sea of Azov, including Berdyansk and Mariupol.
o Link up with partisan groups that have operated around Melitopol since the start of the war, and who have been instrumental in preparing the battlefield by destroying Russian transport links and military equipment, not to mention killing Russian officials and Ukrainian collaborators.
Winter comes later in southern Ukraine, so it may be possible to start a southern attack this year. The video of Kherson, shown earlier, shows leaves still on the trees. I traveled all Crimea in mid-December. There was no snow and firm ground.
· The Nova Khahovka Dam to stay intact. For Russia, there are too many negative outcomes from blowing the dam, including:
o The flooding would inundate areas on the Left Bank where Russia is building defense lines, whereas Kherson City is built on high ground.
o It would deprive the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant with vital cooling water, as the water level in the reservoir drains.
o Crimea’s access to surface water via the North Crimea Canal would be cut off.
Other News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” provides additional information on how Ukraine rolled up Russian resistance in Kherson, without resorting to frontal attacks. Much of the content included in The Latest Denys has been superseded by events. He did mention the strong likelihood that the long range HIMERS rockets have been delivered to Ukraine.
Impact of the U.S. Mid-Term Elections on Ukraine
I don’t want to descend into punditry, but here is one person’s conclusions, some admittedly quirky, about the outcome of the recent U.S. elections on Ukraine:
· Assistance will continue. Ukraine will still have strong bi-partisan support in the new Congress. There is going to be a supplemental appropriation voted on in the final session of the existing Congress, called the “Lame Duck” Session, that lasts until the end of the year, prior to the new Congress being sworn in on January 3, 2023.
· Trump will fade away, maybe loudly but he will fade away nonetheless. Almost all the Republican candidates Trump backed have lost. Depending on the outcome of the Georgia Senate Runoff, which may well return control of the Senate to the Republicans, Trump might claim credit for this development, but it will return Mitch McConnell, Trump’s nemesis, to Leadership. Republican House candidates, many of which were endorsed by Trump, underperformed leaving Republican control of the House well below expectations. All this will leave Trump as a 3-time loser: the 2018 mid-terms where Republicans lost control of the House; 2020 General Election, where Trump, and only Trump, was responsible for the change in control of the Senate; now 2022. When will Republicans learn? Soon, I think.
· Ukrainian election officials need to come to the United States to teach us how to conduct proper elections. 3 days after the election, vote counts in several states still have not been completed. Many Congressional districts in California, home to Silicon Valley, have only counted 40% of the vote. Even if there was no cheating and votes were tabulated correctly, it’s about the perception of fraud when counting takes so long.
· Victoria Spartz 2.0? Victoria Spartz is the first Ukrainian to be elected to the U.S. Congress. Since her election to Congress from the 5th District of Indiana in 2020, Rep. Spartz (R-Indiana) has tried to play both ends against the other, maintaining her Trump credibility by criticizing senior Ukrainian Government officials and calling for investigations on arms shipments. I follow Rep. Spartz on Twitter, and I get her Congressional email announcements. I had high hopes when she was first elected but, prior to the start of the war, there wasn’t a single message about Ukraine coming from Rep. Spartz. Since the start of the war, she has been to Ukraine approximately 6 times and never seems to tire of wearing blue and yellow attire. By all means, Spartz should monitor arms shipments. As a Member of Congress that’s her responsibility. However, criticizing Ukrainian Government Officials, using allegations that were already raised by Ukrainian investigative reporters, simply to burnish her Trump credibility, adds nothing. Perhaps Rep. Spartz will learn something in her 2nd Term – Spartz 2.0.
