Yesterday’s Missile Attack on Kyiv
“Reporting From Ukraine” provides an excellent account of how yesterday’s missile attack was structured, with a primary goal of knocking out Patriot missile batteries around Kyiv. He reported that Soviet-era anti-aircraft guns, and likely the German Gepards, have proven to be very effective against the Iranian drones, leaving the Patriots, the NASAMS and the German IRIS-Ts to deal with cruise and ballistic missiles. Collectively, it’s called a “layered defense.”
Given the Russian mindset, one of the reasons why the Russians attacked during daylight yesterday is likely because they know that schoolchildren are preparing for the ceremonial last day of school. To mark the occasion, children are dressed in their best clothes. Graduates wear sashes to denote their accomplishments.
Instead of a happy time, yesterday we saw scenes of children running down the sidewalk, many of them screaming, on the way to Metro stations that serve as air raid shelters. As a Ukrainian defense adviser pointed out, on yesterday’s BBC/America’s nightly news, probably 50% of these children have a parent at the Front. He had been in one of the Metro stations.
I saw a view of one Metro Station that we often used – Kontractova Ploshcha. There were so many people inside getting protection from the Russian attack, that it appeared impossible to find a place to sit, even on the floor (there aren’t many benches).
Kontractova Ploshcha serves Podil. Podil reminds me of Greenwich Village in New York. Before WW-II Podil was a Jewish neighborhood and prone to periodic flooding. Today it is a commercial area, but with residences, retail establishments and restaurants. There is a very old Orthodox church and monastery, where we used to bring our easter basket to be blessed (and where the American got routinely doused with holy water). For many years we lived just around the corner from Kontrova Ploshcha.
Interview With LTGEN Ben Hodges, U.S. Army (Ret.)/Daily Telegraph
I wanted to listen to this interview, because Hodges has been In the minority, among military experts commenting on the war in Ukraine, in predicting Ukraine’s victory this year, and that the victory would include the liberation of Crimea.
What I was hoping for, and didn’t get, was a comment by Hodges on the likely condition of the Russian defenders manning the trenches in Southern Ukraine, and how he thought they would react in the face of a Ukrainian offensive. Would they fight or run? We have been hearing consistent reports of how Ukraine is hitting Russian logistics and troop concentrations throughout Southern Ukraine. What would be the opinion of Gen. Hodges on how the Ukrainian “shaping operation” would play on the mindset of the Russian defenders in the trenches? There were incidences of Russians running away from Ukrainian attacks around Vuhledar, in Southern Ukraine. Is this any indicator of how Russians would likely react elsewhere? I was disappointed.
However, Gen. Hodges made some other interesting observations, including:
· He thinks that Ukraine won’t launch further attacks on the Kerch Bridge, wanting to leave it open to facilitate Russian evacuations.
· He appears to believe that if Ukraine is able to get to the entrances to Crimea, they can put enough pressure on the Russians in Crimea through artillery and missile strikes that will result in the liberation of Crimea.
· He says that the logistics system developed by NATO, largely in Poland, to supply Ukraine with weapons and other needs is like “nothing that anyone has ever seen.” He says trucks come in an assembly line fashion, are quickly loaded with both weapons and other items, and leave for Ukraine. What Hodges described was a latter-day version of the Red Ball Express.
· He said that he has been surprised that Russia has not attacked a single Western supply convoy.
The Bristol, New Hampshire Newspaper
Why, you might ask, do I include the June 20, 2022 Edition of the “Newfound Landing,” the newspaper that serves the town of Bristol, New Hampshire, a small town located between Concord, the State Capital, and Hanover, home of Dartmouth College? The reason is that Margarita Simonyan, the well-known Editor-in-Chief of Russia Today, spent a year in Bristol as a young exchange student. Recently, Simonyan has been in the news, for calling for the assassination of Sen. Lindsay Graham.
I have often wondered about what the students at Bristol’s local high school felt about one of their more famous alumnae. The article, written by 8 students at Newfound Regional High School,” provides the answer. Here are some excerpts:
· During her time in Bristol, Simonyan was taking Advanced Placement (AP) English.
· One of Simonyan’s AP English classmates remembered, “She was full of joy, always curious. She was a huge part of the class of 1996, and of my memories of senior year.
I’ve always hoped we had an impact on her, too.”
· “In 2020, Simonyan wrote an intensely moving letter to her hostmother, Dotty O’Hara of
Alexandria, shortly after Mrs. O’Hara’s passing. “Shining with pride, you, tall and white, blushing with short blond hair, introduced me, small, thin, black: ‘This is Maggie. My Russian daughter!’ “ Many members of the O’Hara Family traveled to Russia, to attend Simonyan’s wedding.
· “Recently, I was re-reading old letters that I sent to my parents when I was studying in America. I wrote to my parents: 'I have a feeling that [America] is not a country, but a kindergarten for mentally disabled children. Even at 15, I already understood that."
· The school that Simonyan attended was very small. “Only 10.8 percent of the 111 staff and students surveyed indicated that they often watch the news, and only 4.5 percent know someone personally affected by the Russo-Ukrainian war. However, more than half expressed concern about the future of this conflict and its impact on the rest of the world.”
· “Recent 2015 Newfound alum and FLEX exchange student Juliya Hrabenko of Ukraine is determined to raise more awareness of the events occurring in her home country. Students at NRHS met virtually with Hrabenko in May and heard her describe, for the first time publicly, her eyewitness experience of the Russian invasion that began
on Feb. 24 while she was living in Kyiv.”
· In April (2022), Hrabenko and other FLEX alums launched a protest campaign demanding that the American Councils for International Education join the worldwide ban on any representation of Russia until further notice, as well as withdraw FLEX status from Rus-
sian alumni such as Margarita Simonyan.” (Simonyan’s year in Bristol was paid for by the U.S. Government)
· “As one FLEX alum to another, Simonyan says that, “With all my heart, I wish for her [Hrabenko] to stay safe and stay firm in opposing Kiev’s Nazi regime that has
been slaughtering its own people for the past eight years.” “
· “The freedom of the press, Simonyan says, is an essential service for any so-
ciety and community. “Unfortunately, what we’ve learned recently is that the idea of a free press long propagated by a number of countries, including the US, has largely been a myth,” she adds.”
I find it interesting that a high school in a small New England town, located in a state whose license plates contain the message, “Live Free or Die,” had a hand in the education of Margarita Simonyan, Editor-in-Chief of one of the most odious figures in this war, and a small New England secondary school had a hand in the education of Tucker Carlson, one of America’s leading Russia apologists. It won’t be surprising if the former offered a job to the latter.
