Counteroffensive – Review of the Bidding
It seems increasingly likely that Ukraine’s counteroffensive has started, but it is taking a form very different than what the pundits predicted, but not what we predicted.
Yesterday, Gen. Zaluzhnyi announced that he would be unable to attend a NATO military conference in Germany because of pressing business in Ukraine. A few hours later Pres. Zelenskyy said that Ukraine “isn’t ready” to launch its counteroffensive. He is still expected to visit Germany on May 13th & 14th, despite a German leak exposing his itinerary.
Meanwhile, both “Reporting From Ukraine” and “The Latest Denys” report on a Ukrainian offensive south of Bakhmut that could threaten Wagner soldiers inside Bakhmut with encirclement. Previously, Reporting From Ukraine described large concentrations of Ukrainian artillery west of Bakhmut. Over the last few days, he has reported on several Ukrainian fire missions in support of the Ukrainian advance south of Bakhmut. There have been reports of Russian soldiers running away from their positions south of Bakhmut. Ukraine has said several times that they were preparing a “surprise” for the Russians engaged in and around Bakhmut. Is this the “surprise,” Ukraine was referring to?
Previous reports by “Reporting From Ukraine” talked about limited Ukrainian advances across the Zero Line south of Vuhledar. Today, Denys reported that Ukrainians are pushing Russians from one large island near the mouth of the Dnieper River, perhaps preparatory for a Ukrainian advance across the Dnieper. If successful, Ukraine could relieve the artillery attacks on Kherson City, from Russians operating on the opposite bank.
How does this all add up? An offensive backed up by plenty of deception. Remember that Ukraine was concerned that the recent American document leak revealed Ukrainian plans for an offensive. It is quite possible that Ukraine has had to take some time to adjust those plans.
There are now at least 3 Ukrainian advances, Bakhmut, Vuhledar and the Dnieper Islands, for the Russians to worry about, with perhaps the largest taking place south of Bakhmut being supplemented by a large concentration of Ukrainian artillery. Zelenskyy has said that risking large numbers of Ukrainian casualties from one large offensive of the type predicted by most of the pundits, is unacceptable to Ukraine. We have predicted an offensive similar to what seems to be going on now. In terms of liberated territory, the result may well be more advantageous to Ukraine than the one large offensive.
Most of the pundits expected a major thrust south toward Melitopol. That may still happen, but Ukraine, like the competent armed force that it is, possibly sees a big opportunity around Bakhmut, and they’re taking advantage.
Other Military News
· “Storm Shadow” Missiles – According to reports, the UK has provided Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles with a range of approximately 300km. Storm Shadow, combined with a missile designed and produced in Ukraine with a range of approximately 400km but is still being tested, gives Ukraine the ability to hit ships of the Black Sea Fleet while they’re in port, plus all of Crimea and the Kerch Bridge. The Biden Administration, that have resisted supplying Ukraine with ATACMS missiles, even though Ukraine has promised the Biden Administration that ATACMS won’t be used against targets inside Russia. They must be relieved that the blame will now fall on the British.
· “Daily Telegraph” – Last night while at the gym I listened to the latest Ukraine podcast from the Daily Telegraph. It contained 2 very interesting reports.
o Ukrainian estimates of Russian losses, long suspected to be overstated, may well be understated. The reason – increased accuracy of Ukrainian artillery. According to the report each artillery battery now has a drone unit attached, allowing each fire mission to be spotted in real time. The result is a substantial reduction in Ukraine’s use of artillery rounds, and an increase in accuracy leading to more Russian casualties.
o As possible evidence of increased Russian losses, Russia is now recruiting migrants from Central Asian countries who come to Russia for work – anything to avoid having to call up ethnic Russians living in major Russian cities. According to the Telegraph, the average salary for Central Asian migrant is $800/month. Russia is offering migrants a $2,000 bonus to sign up, plus a salary of $4,000/month. Sounds good, if one survives their enlistment and they’re able to remit their salaries to their families – 2 unlikely assumptions.
I have seen the other side of this equation, in 2012 when I was in Kyrgyzstan working with Kyrgyz financial institutions to help improve their ability to finance women-owned businesses, mostly started by women whose husbands were working in Russia. Now the Russians are effectively proposing to kill hundreds of Kyrgyz men so Russians don’t have to die.
· Latest Lawrence Freedman – His latest Substack blog talks about Moscow’s Victory Day Parade, whether the drone attack on the Kremlin was a false flag operation (according to him, it wasn’t) and Ukraine’s effort to manage expectations for the offensive. Regaring the drone attack, Freedman said that if it was a Ukrainian attack launched from Ukrainian territory, it would show an increased level of Ukraine’s capabilities. Not necessarily true – a Ukrainian drone was found in a suburb east of Moscow.
· “Ukraine’s Hidden Advantage - How European Trainers Have Transformed Kyiv’s Army and Changed the War”/Foreign Affairs Magazine – The article describes how European countries have played a crucial role in training Ukrainian soldiers, including advance infantry training, training (along with the Americans) in combined arms operations, training on the equipment that European countries are providing Ukraine and, especially Poland, setting up maintenance shops to repair and maintain the equipment.
I have one criticism of the article, where it says “These initiatives paid off: in contrast to 2014, when they were disorganized and lacked up-to-date training to counter Russia’s seizure of Crimea and initial war in the Donbas…” It has largely been forgotten that between June and August 2014, the “disorganized” Ukrainian Army took back a large portion of territory in Donbas that was first captured by Russian troops alongside the separatists. It was only the intervention of regular Russian troops, in late August and early September 2014, that stopped Ukraine from taking back all of Donbas.
