Interview With Former Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko
The interview was conducted by a reporter from Deutsche Welle. Since the start of Russia’s latest invasion, Pres. Poroshenko has been serving with the territorial defense, and he has been acquiring weapons for Ukraine’s armed forces. Some of the kit he has acquired can be seen behind him.
While watching the interview, bear in mind that it would be very easy for Pres. Poroshenko to take the bait offered by the interviewer and criticize Pres. Zelenskyy for allegedly going against the advice of his generals and deciding to hold onto Bakhmut. After all, Zelenskyy treated Poroshenko with extreme disrespect during a “debate” (I use the word “debate” loosely) durin the Presidential campaign, held in Olympic Stadium in Kyiv. After Pres. Zelenskyy took office, his Prosecutor General filed treason changes against Poroshenko, charges that have now been suspended because of the invasion. Instead, in the interview Poroshenko described the allegations of a dispute between Pres. Zelenskyy and his generals over Bakhmut as “Russian propaganda.
Personally, I found the interviewer to be annoying and extremely unprofessional, asking Poroshenko several leading questions containing the usual Western narratives about the dispute over Bakhmut and negotiations to end the war, and often interrupting Poroshenko when Poroshenko wasn’t saying what she wanted to hear. Porosheko wouldn’t have any of it. Here are some additional excerpts:
· In response to the interviewer’s question about whether or not Ukraine is simply to “buy time” by defending Bakhmut, Poroshenko said, “We have enough weapons to stand up to Russia, but we do not have enough weapons to go on the offensive.” Poroshenko went on to say that he has been to Bakhmut several times, most recently last week.
· In response to the interviewer’s question about whether Poroshenko is open to negotiations, Poroshenko said that Ukraine already has the best negotiator in the world – the Ukrainian Army. He said that the only language Putin understands is “the language of strength.”
· Poroshenko said “we need to de-Putinize Germany, de-Putinize Europe, and de-Putinize the World.” He seemed to imply that the talk about negotiations and Ukraine having to give up territory, is a form of “Putinization.”
In this interview, Poroshenko illustrated what it means to have principles. Perhaps the interviewer could learn something from Poroshenko’s responses to her questions.
Vuhledar Summery
“Reporting From Ukraine” provides an excellent after-action report on the recent tank battle around Vuhledar. Obscured by the fighting around Bakhmut, the tank battle around Vuhledar was the largest of the war and Russia was routed. Some takeaways:
· Both armies used the same tactics that they used a year ago, in the fighting around Kyiv. Ukraine won there, and they won again.
· Just like one year ago, Ukraine was able to force the Russians into attacking in a column, and in response Ukraine used the same tactics, namely knocking out the lead and trailing vehicles forcing those in the middle to go into the fields where they were disabled by land mines.
· Ukraine won this battle without the benefit of the new Western equipment that is currently arriving in Ukraine. Both sides were using the same equipment, mostly T-72s and BMPs; Ukraine won with better tactics.
· Ukraine didn’t have the benefit of using the combined arms training that some units are currently receiving from Western allies.
Ukraine has the advantage over Russia, when the fighting becomes a war of movement as was the case last Fall around Kharkiv and Kherson. Russia has had the advantage when the fighting becomes static, relying on manpower and artillery. However, as we may be seeing around Bakhmut, and perhaps even Kreminna, that advantage may also be going to Ukraine.

One year ago on March 7, 2022, we reported that russia’s attacking columns were focused on the encirclement of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mykolaiv, reaching the administrative borders in Luhansk and Donetsk regions, and creating a land corridor from occupied Crimea to occupied territories in the Donbas.
However, as of March 7 russia stopped advances and began regrouping its forces in all directions other than in Luhansk. The attack by column had been halted by military, territorial defense and partisans. Ukrainian counterattacks starting March 7 pushed russia back from Brovary – Kyiv satellite city, Chuhuyev – Kharkiv region, Skrypali outside of Sumy and halted near Chernihiv. Ukraine’s air space remained contested and russia finally began to target military objectives from the air in addition to civilian ones. Within two weeks of the war Ukrainians launched over 500 telegram and viber channels, jammed U-tube and Facebook with military blogs. Volunteer activity was increasing geometrically. The invasion was halted without assistance by Ukrainians and their arms.
