The Latest From Bakhmut
They often disagree, or take different perspectives, but today both “Reporting From Ukraine” and the “Latest Denys” seem to agree that the tide in Bakhmut may be turning in Ukraine’s favor. From the remarks of the Head of the Wagner Group, the major Russian formation attacking Bakhmut, he seems to agree. On the other side, my colleague states that Pres. Zelenskyy has overruled his Generals, and he has ordered them to hold Bakhmut. Piecing these together, here is what seems to be happening:
· Ukrainians have withdrawn from the portion of Bakhmut lying east of the river flowing north and south, bisecting the city. Some number of Ukrainian troops remain in the center of the city, to the west of the river, but likely in reduce number. Instead they have been redeployed to the northern and southern flanks to try to prevent Bakhmut’s encirclement.
· Ukrainians have been launching artillery strikes against Russian forces located to the north of the city, and at the same time they have pushed back Russian forces located to the south of the city, leaving Ukrainians inside the city the opportunity to withdraw.
· Denys reports that Russians to the north haven’t moved forward in the last 3 days; “Reporting From Ukraine” states that Russians in the north have actually fallen back to “more reliable positions,” leaving them open to Ukrainian artillery attacks.
· The Latest Danys reports that Ukraine has deployed elite units to towns near Bakhmut, in Siversk, to the northeast, Sloviansk, to the northwest, and Chasiv Yar adjacent to the Russians south of Bakhmut. “Reporting From Ukraine” states that Ukrainians facing Russian forces to the north of Bakhmut have been successfully rotated out of the line, replace by fresh troops. The fresh troops he refers to may be the units that Denys referred to in his report.
· Ukrainian General Staff is reporting that Wagner/Russian losses around Bakhmut are now 7/1 compared to Ukraine.
If Denys is correct, and Ukraine has moved 4 elite formations to areas near Bakhmut, and there is a possibility that these formations can move south encircle Wagner around Bakhmut, then perhaps Ukraine believes that there is now an opportunity to bring a decisive blow against Wagner. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense for Ukraine to commit 4 elite formations to positions where they could be committed to the fight around Bakhmut.
A posting from the NY Times, less than 1 hour ago as I write this, states, “Ukraine may see a chance to damage Wagner in Bakhumt.” Usually, the American newspapers are less optimistic than either Denys or “Reporting From Ukraine.” Now, their assessments seem to be similar.
The only thing I can do is try to “connect the dots.”
