Partisans

This is an excellent, but somewhat long (20 minutes) video on the role of Ukrainian partisan groups in Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine.   I have brought up the role of the partisans in a number of these emails, but this is the first video I have seen that describes their activities.

I recommend listening to every minute of the video, but for those who don’t have time here are a few takeaways, along with some of my own observations:

·       I first heard about the partisans in January 2015, from remarks by a former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine.   In particular, he mentioned the formation of partisan groups in southern Ukraine, along the “Land Bridge” between Russia and Crimea, that was expected to be a major objective in a future Russian invasion of Ukraine.

·       He mentions pre-positioned weapons caches in both Melitopol and Sloviansk, Donetsk Oblast, now serving as sources of supply for partisans operating in these respective regions.

·       Training – He mentioned partisan groups receiving U.S. training.   In the early days, after the end of the Revolution of Dignity, training was likely provided by Ukrainians who had served with the Soviet Army in Afghanistan.

·       He mentions the role of Ivan Federov, the Mayor of temporarily occupied Melitopol.   He is now operating outside the city, but he assists partisan groups operating in and around Melitopol.

·       He describes the operations of partisan groups operating in the Carpathians in the years after WW-II.   I have also mentioned these same groups.  He said that before they were extinguished in the early 1950s, that partisans active in Soviet Ukraine were responsible for the deaths of roughly 35,000 Soviet soldiers and police.

·       The National Resistance Center is a government website that provides support for partisan groups throughout Ukraine.   Among other things, the National Resistance Center distributes 25,000 rifles, and thousands of rounds of ammunition, to Ukrainian citizens willing to use them.

News From the Battlefield

Yesterday I mentioned several areas along the front where Ukrainians are pushing Russians back, yet the pundits keep stating that Ukrainian troops are “exhausted.”   The New York Times seems to be bucking this trend, in Bakhmut of all places, with an article in today’s paper entitled, “Ukrainian Soldiers, Nearly Encircled, Push Russians Back.”   Meanwhile, Prigozhin says that Wagner’s position around Bakhmut is in danger because of lack of supply of artillery shells from Russia.

A bit to the south, around Avdiivka halfway between Bakhmut and Vulhudar, “Reporting From Ukraine” claims that Russia suffered a significant reversal.   Avdiivka is the site of the Avdiivka Coke Plant, owned by Metinvest a company belonging to Rinat Akhmetov, Ukraine’s richest man.   It is hard to imagine that the plant is still operating. 

The Latest Denys describes a Russian offensive around Bakhmut that appears to be petering out.   A Ukrainian attack that Denys describes 2 minutes into his video may be the same Ukrainian attack mentioned earlier in the New York Times.   Some other Latest Denys highlights:

·       3 minutes into the video - the Russian propaganda chief was nearly killed by a what appears to be a Ukrainian artillery strike.

·       5:30 into the video – Rather than firing him, Defense Minister Shoigu has promoted Gen. Muradov, the commander of Russian forces around Vuluhdar.  Shoigu wants Muradov to try to take Vuluhdar again.   Soldiers under Muradov’s command may not be so sure.

·       7:35 minutes into the video – A description of the Ukrainian program, “I Want to Liv,” designed to induce Russian soldiers to surrender.  So far, they have almost 10,000 takers, and they average between 50-100 calls per day, from Russian soldiers who have “had enough.”

One Year Ago

One year ago on March 5, 2022, we reported that the Russian invaders fired on the Zaporizhia Atomic Energy Station, Europe’s largest.  Concurrently the attacks on Kyiv and Kharkiv came to a complete halt.  At the time the russians were actively conducting air attacks on the Black Sea coast, almost surrounded Mariupol, began indiscriminate artillery shelling of Chernihiv and other smaller satellite cities around Kyiv and Kharkiv, and street protests in Kherson against the rashists were in their fourth day.  The initial blitzkrieg started to mutate into an attack on Ukrainian civilians.

It, she said, can only be answered when it becomes a fact.

23:29: More than 200 suspects have been arrested in Turkey in cases of poor-quality construction in the earthquake zone.

·       Among those arrested are 93 contractors, 123 builders and 13 building owners. Also among them there are 18 people who have made changes in the design of buildings in the earthquake zone. All of them were arrested during an investigation into destroyed buildings or zoning violations in provinces affected by earthquakes in Kahramanmarash.

23:08 The Wall Sreet Journal: The U.S. is concerned that China could use its own ZPMC truck cranes for espionage.

·       Such cranes, according to the publication, are used in many ports in the United States. They also work in those ports that are used by the military.

21:40 SwissInfo: There is a fierce debate in the Swiss Parliament over the feasibility of lifting the ban on the re-export of Swiss-made ammunition to countries involved in armed conflicts.

·       The publication reported that the ambassadors of France and the Netherlands called on Switzerland to reconsider its procedure for re-exporting Swiss-made armored vehicles and ammunition in order to strengthen European security.

21:20: To unblock Ukrainian exports, Italy plans to create a logistics corridor.

·       This was announced by the Minister of Economic Development of Italy Adolfo Urso.

·       "In fact, the Black Sea is closed due to hostilities. In this case, there is no other option left but to deliver the goods to the Adriatic using the existing railways and highways," Urso said. Quinews Pisa: Italy has begun work on transforming its two ports into a logistics platform for Ukraine.

·       "There is also a part of Ukraine that has not been invaded and which must continue to produce: we are working to create an infrastructure, rail and port logistics corridor," he said.

19:56 PolskieRadio - Polish President Andrzej Duda: Russian aggression against Ukraine is neocolonial in nature, and Russia intends to exploit Ukraine as colonialists often do, by stripping its resources and stealing its productive assets.

·       "I say this openly because in the past Poland was a victim of the brutal policies of neighboring empires," Duda said.

18:17 CNN: The Ukrainian military continues to keep the Kostiantynivka-Bakhmut highway under its control.

·       This was stated by deputy commander of the battalion "Svoboda", Lieutenant of the National Guard of Ukraine Volodymyr Nazarenko.

·       The lieutenant added that the situation around Bakhmut is "hellish", as well as on the entire eastern front.

15:37: The Ukrainian national team won "gold" and "bronze" in the women's high jump sector at the European Indoor Athletics Championships, which is held in Istanbul.

·       Yaroslava Maguchikh became the European champion, overcoming a height of 1.98 m. "Bronze" was won by Kateryna Tabashnik, who jumped 1.94 m.

14:57: An inscription in Russian was removed from the railway station in Riga, says Latvian Transport Minister Jānis Vitenbergs.

14:37: A group of people from Belarus attempted to cross the border with Poland illegally.

·       A video from one of these attempts was published by the Polish Border Guard Service.

·       Border guards noted that illegal immigrants pay the organizers to deliver them directly to the border and provide them with equipment for illegal crossing.

13:52 Radio Liberty - Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom: Great Britain has increased the number of AS-90 self-propelled guns that will be sent to Ukraine.

·       Earlier it was reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine could receive 14 units of such equipment, and now 33 such ACS will be sent.

13:21: In Tel Aviv, protests against judicial reform took place at night, in which 140 thousand people took part.

13:06 TVN24: Ambulances intended for Ukraine were destroyed in Poland

·       It is reported that the cars were bought by volunteers for transfer to hospitals in Kharkiv and Sumy region. One car burned completely, the second is to be restored.

·       Police identified a suspect in the arson. It turned out to be a local resident previously convicted of a similar crime.

·       The President of Ukraine introduced General Oleksandr Pavlyuk, appointed earlier First Deputy Minister of Defense, to the headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. The relevant decree is published on the president's website.

10:31: More than 2.1 million Ukrainians took part in a survey about March 8 in Diia, said Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov.

·       The majority voted to leave March 8 as a weekend — 1.3 million+ votes.

·       703+ thousand users voted to make March 8 a working day. Another 110+ thousand Ukrainians have not decided

08:40: Air defense forces shot down 13 kamikaze drones at night, - Spokesman of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Ignat

·       "15 UAVs were previously launched, 13 of them were destroyed by air defense with various fire means. The result is pretty good. They attacked from the north, attacked the central and eastern regions," the spokesman said.

·       "The Russian Federation focuses its main efforts on conducting offensive actions in the Kupyansk, Liman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Shakhtarsky directions. ·       To mislead the Defense Forces of Ukraine, Russians maneuver by moving columns in the areas of the settlements of Nova Kakhovka (Kherson region) – Armyansk (temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea).

·       These actions cause discontent among the personnel of the Russian troops. The main reason is the lack of sufficient fuel and even a hint of the effectiveness of such maneuvers.

·       In the city of Volnovakha, Donetsk region, Russians set up a base for the restoration of damaged equipment on the funds of a local vocational technical school. Students are forcibly involved in repair work

·       Last day, Ukrainian aviation inflicted 12 strikes on areas of concentration of Russians, and units of rocket troops and artillery hit 3 control points, 4 areas of concentration and 1 position of air defense of Russian troops, - the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

·       "This allows you not to turn off the lights in Kyiv, Kyiv, Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

22:02 Operational Command South: On Sunday, March 5, missile and artillery units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed an enemy ammunition depot, MLRS and artillery gun on the Kinburn Spit.

·       "The effective work of our missile and artillery units, by delivering accurate verified strikes on enemy firing positions on the Kinburn Spit, removed from use one artillery gun and a multiple launch rocket system. ·       The leadership and servicemen of the 155th Marine Brigade of the RF Armed Forces refuse to go on the offensive again in the Vuhledar direction, -

·       According to the Minister, Ukraine's position, which is voiced on all international platforms, boils down to the fact that any negotiations on ZNPP should be based on the demilitarization of the station, the withdrawal of Rosatom employees from ZNPP.

·       At the same time, Ukrainian personnel should be able to operate a nuclear facility calmly, without pressure.

15:56: In the Black Sea, 16 Russian ships are on alert, of which 4 are carriers of cruise missiles "Kalibr", the total volley of which is 24 missiles.

10:16 Donetsk RMA: On March 5, Russians killed 1 resident of Donetsk region in Bakhmut. Another 5 people in the region were injured.

·       It is currently impossible to establish the exact number of victims in Mariupol and Volnovakha.

09:44: Whether Russia captures Bakhmut or not, its further large-scale offensive in other areas is unlikely over the next few months, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

·       "Ukrainians are likely to have the opportunity to seize the initiative on the battlefield and launch a counterattack when the Russian offensive on Bakhmut reaches a climax, even if it means the loss of the city for Ukraine," the ISW said.

09:28 Institute for the Study of War: Battle of Bakhmut: despite the possible withdrawal of Ukrainian troops, the war in the city can further deplete Russian forces, -

·       Experts noted that the Ukrainian defense of Bakhmut remains strategically justified, as it "continues to absorb Russian manpower and equipment while Ukrainian troops do not suffer excessive losses."

07:20 Institute for the Study of War: Ukrainian forces are likely to conduct a limited tactical withdrawal of troops in Bakhmut, but it is too early to assess intentions for a complete withdrawal from the city.

·       Experts from the Institute for the Study of War noted that the Ukrainian defense of Bakhmut remains strategically justified because it "continues to absorb Russian manpower and equipment while Ukrainian troops do not suffer excessive losses."

·       "Ukrainian troops are unlikely to retreat from Bakhmut immediately. They can continue their gradual withdrawal with fighting to deplete Russian troops in urban battles. Russian troops are unlikely to quickly gain significant territorial success in waging war in the city, which is usually beneficial for those defending themselves and may allow Ukrainian troops to inflict significant losses on Russian advancing units, even if Ukrainian troops actively retreat," the ISW said.

·       According to him, the defense of Bakhmut is held not only by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but also by border guards with the National Guard.

22:14 Defense Express: Ukraine's defense of Bakhmut is under increasing pressure from the enemy. There are intense battles in the city and on its outskirts, but the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops does not take place.

·       Even after the capture of Soledar (and this was one of the cities on the Seversk - Soledar - Bakhmut defense line), the fortress is kept. In addition to the east, the enemy is advancing on both roads on the flank of Bakhmut. In the south it is Konstantinovka - Bakhmut: fighting continues there, in particular, in the area of Ivanovo. In the north - in the direction of Khromovy, Berkhovka, on the highway from Chasovoy Yar.

·       These important roads to the city - under the fire of the Russian Federation, but not cut. The city is controlled by the Defense Forces: the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service, the National Guard with troop units. Despite the constant pressure of the enemy, our military is taking measures to stabilize the front line, in particular, conducting counterattacks in certain areas.

·       Prigozhin claims that if the Wagnerians retreat from Bakhmut, the entire front will fall down all the way to the border of the Russian Federation or even further.

4:56: As of today, about 4500 civilians remain in Bakhmut, the evacuation has been greatly reduced, Bakhmut's deputy mayor Alexander Marchenko said in a comment to CNN.

·       According to him, now 5-10 people a day are being evacuated from Bakhmut. At the same time, during the peak of evacuation, up to 600 people left the city.

·       The official also said that four health workers remained in the city now.

·       1 person was wounded in Siversk — houses on two streets were damaged in the city. Three houses were damaged in Zvanivska territorial community.

11:52: SBU detains former militant of Sparta battalion of the terrorist organization "DPR" in Odesa

·       As part of an enemy group, he shelled the defensive positions of Ukrainian troops, participated in battles near the Donetsk airport, was on duty at checkpoints and studied at "courses" of snipers. But after being wounded, he left the ranks of militants and covertly left for the controlled territory of Ukraine.
