The Ukraine Orthodox Church – Moscow Patriarchate Monks – Out!
The lawsuit that the monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) filed to vacate the eviction order for the monastery at the Pechersk Lavra, has been dismissed. The monks must leave today. Meanwhile the Abbot, Metropolitan Pavlo threatened Pres. Zelenskyy, a Jew, with “God’s punishment.”
Given that many Ukrainians follow the UOC-MP, over the years Ukraine has bent over backward to treat the UOC-MP with deference. The fact remains that the UOC-MP is an agent of a foreign government. Patriarch Kirill is an official of the Russian State. I wouldn’t be at all surprised it Metropolitan Pavlo shows up as a guest on a future “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”
News From the Battlefield
Bakhmut – While stating that Russian troops are making gains inside of Bakhmut, “Reporting From Ukraine” describes how Ukrainian snipers are turning Central Bakhmut into a killing zone, while regular Ukrainian troops are pushing Russians back from the flanks, allowing Ukraine to retain control of major supply routes into the city. Today’s New York Times includes an article that reports on a Ukrainian tactical group based just outside of Bakhmut, where the assessment is approximately the same as that given by “Reporting From Ukraine.”
It should be remembered that last Spring and Summer Ukraine used the fighting in Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk to inflict a large number of casualties on the Russians, which helped allow Ukraine to roll up Russian positions in the Kharkiv Region. Something similar might now be going on in Bakhmut, given that Ukraine seems to be gathering major forces in locations outside of Bakhmut.
Crimea – “The Latest Denys” reported on an explosion at a Russian air base just north of Crimea’s Capital City, Simferopol.
Many recall that prior to Russia’s occupation of Crimea in February 2014, Russia was using the navy base at Sevastopol under a long-term lease with Ukraine. What most people don’t know is that the lease included the use of 2 airfields in Central Crimea, near Simferopol but far from Sevastopol, including the military portion of the Simferopol airport.
In July 2012 I was meeting with vegetable and strawberry farmer at his place just north of Simferopol, when I noticed 2 attack helicopters landing at the airbase just north of the Simferopol Airpost and southwest from where we were standing. I asked the farmer about the helicopters. He said that they were Russian, and that Russia leases the airbase. From strawberries to attack helicopters.
In late February 2014 these 2 airbases likely served as staging areas for the “Little Green Men,” Russian special operations forces without insignia, who took over strategic points around Simferopol, beginning the Russian invasion of Crimea. They were likely airlifted into Crimea from around Sochi, where they had been providing security for the Sochi Winter Olympics that had just concluded.
At 12:45 into the video Denys includes a very good Russian map of the situation in Bakhmut. It can be viewed consecutively with the maps contained in “Reporting From Ukraine” showing Ukraine’s use of snipers.

“Looking forward towards the end of war. One of the issues facing Ukraine prior to and now more acutely because of the war is water and wastewater. The issue is complex and simple solutions of the past are no longer acceptable.”
“Previously the solution was to set a drinking standard and purify water to meet the standard, and the same with wastewater. This might be acceptable for Ukraine if its water infrastructure - pipes mostly, weren't distressed and in many ways neutralizing water purification. Wastewater processing facilities degraded in most communities prior to the war further than the freshwater infrastructure. The prevalent prewar condition was exacerbated by wartime destruction.”
“Ukraine and its allies will likely seek to solve this issue with capital expenditures. The problem with this solution is that outside of human consumption water is vital to industry and the environment. If the solution doesn't include solving industrial and environmental water use issues within a few decades water availability will have altered and simple human survival will require tripling and quadrupling probable capital expenditure. In the interim flash flooding and droughts, other extreme weather events increasing in number and severity costing more in damages than a holistic solution.”
“To avoid senseless short term expenditures, we need to better manage water use. For example, a holistic plan for water use in the Dniester River Basin, running north and south, largely along the border with Moldova and emptying into the Black Sea, will increase water availability and quality from the Polish border to the Black Sea. A plan will include reforestation, climate smart agriculture, industrial and human wastewater purification. Economic growth from increased agricultural and industrial production, managed forestry, tourism, pyrolysis and bio digestion to produce bio gas, and finally revival of fishery along the river, marshes and Black Sea. All this partially paid for by selling carbon credits and costing the equivalent of an exclusive human drinking water solution.”
