Dmytro Kotsiubailo – A Hero of Ukraine
Dmytro Kotsiubailo was a Junior Lieutenant and a Commander of the 1st Mechanized Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was killed 3 days ago, last March 7th, in Bakhmut. This is a clip from his funeral, held today, March 10th, 2023, at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Kyiv. In attendance was Pres. Zelenskyy and other government officials, Army comrades, and hundreds who came to pay their respects.
After the funeral, mourners marched down Mykhailivs’ka Street to Independence Square. On January 23, 2005, after attending a service at St. Michael’s, I walked down Mykhailivs’ka Street on the way to Independence Square to watch Viktor Yushchenko’s inauguration marking the end of the Orange Revolution. As was the case with the funeral, I remember seeing the row of priests and monks, at that time all wearing orange ribbons. On December 1, 2013, on the first day of Euromaidan, I walked down Mykhailivs’ka Street to Independence Square to join the approximately 1 million people already there.
On the first floor of the pink building that can be seen on the right, was a salon where I used to get my hair cut. Further down the street, on the left, was a restaurant called Syn Dyk. One evening, in January 2005, I stopped there for dinner. It was my 2nd night in Kyiv. On the restaurant’s sound system, I heard the called, “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight.” I hadn’t heard that song in 40 years; I decided Kyiv might not be a bad place.
Kotsiubailo was a member of a far-right group called “The Right Sector.” I’ve been asked about the “Right Sector” many times, and Kotsiubailo is likely held up by Russia, as proof that Ukraine is run by Nazis. I have very little time for those, mostly in the West, who cite the “Right Sector” as proof of Ukraine’s Nazi sympathies, while ignoring their own right-wing affiliations at home, such as the French National Front, AfD in Germany, and similar parties in Austria and Italy, any more than I have time for Russia’s excuse for starting the war, to save Ukraine from Nazism.
Kotsiubailo was a Hero of Ukraine, and he will be missed.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” covers more events around Vuhledar, this time a reported mutiny by Russian troops who had been order into yet another attack against Vuhledar, after they had been decimated in previous attacks and most of their armor destroyed. Reporting from Ukraine stated that units of the “Rosgvardia” were deployed, in an effort to restore order in the ranks around Vuhledar.
Rosgvardia is Russia’s internal police force. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Rosgvardia is around 200,000 to 400,00 strong, and in 2021 they participated in an extensive receive combat training exercise. Rosgvardia doesn’t report to Gen. Gerasimov, Chief of Russia’s General Staff, or to Defense Minister Shoigu. They report directly to Pres. Putin.
Rosgvardia was formed by Pres. Putin, as means of insurance against a possible internal revolt against Putin’s rule, either by the military or via a “Color Revolution.” If Rosgvardia stays engaged in Ukraine, they will become the 3rd Russian military formation engaged in Ukraine that is under a command independent of the Russian Army. The other 2 are the Wagner Group and the Chechens.
Something to watch.

One year ago on March 9, 2022 we reported about unsuccessful attacks on Irpin and Bucha, as well as an increasing number of columns attempting to attack west of Kyiv. The attacks coming near the main western highway were repulsed and a column of tanks was mostly destroyed, with Ukraine taking 7 tanks as trophies. One of the attacking brigades near Bucha was incapable of further fighting and retreated back to Belarus for remanning and re-equipping. Chernihiv, Sumy and Kharkiv were under constant artillery fire and aerial bombardment but the rashists were unable to make gains. They were also repulsed from moving closer to Mykolaiv and Ukrainian forces made their first major attack at the Chornobaiivka airport near Kherson destroying 29 helicopters. Three naval vessels were sunk and evacuation from Volnovakha interdicted by the Rashists, and a few civilians were allowed to flee Mariupol. Except for Javelin and NLAW anti-tan rockets, and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, no western military assistance to this point in time.
