Nova Kakhovka Dam Destruction – Equivalency Plays Into Russia’s Hands
Much of the media coverage of the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Dam starts with the explanations of what happened, and the statements of blame issued by Ukraine and Russia as being equivalent. The Biden Administration is taking the same approach as the media.
Russia has consistently lied about every aspect of their conduct since the start of Russia’s latest invasion; Ukraine has not. Therefore, the explanations issued by Ukraine and Russia concerning the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Dame are anything but equivalent.
In his latest blog, called “Thinking About, Prof. Timothy Snyder offers “10 Guidelines for Thinking About the Catastrophe.” Snyder’s first guideline is:
1. Avoid the temptation to begin the story of this manmade humanitarian and ecological catastrophe by bothsidesing it. That's not journalism.
The media and the Biden Administration are both guilty of “bothsiding” their reporting on the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Dam. Snyder’s piece is well-worth reading, and hopefully serve as a guideline for future media reporting and press briefings from the Biden Administration concerning this tragedy.
Russian Shelling of the Ammonia Pipeline
There is also the principle that law enforcement describes, as a “pattern” of criminality. One additional example of a Russian “pattern” is taking place at virtually the same time as the destruction of the dam – 2 days of Russian shelling of an ammonia pipeline that runs through Kharkiv Oblast. Breach of an ammonia pipeline, and the creation of an ammonia cloud in the atmosphere, can kill thousands of people. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Russia accuses Ukraine of shelling the pipeline, and the media and the Biden Administration “bothsides” the story.
Comments from Residents Living in or Near the Flood zone/Meduza io.
In addition to the comments included in this article, I’ll offer another observation.
In the summer of 2012, I visited a farming operation in southern Kherson Oblast, on the Left Bank of the Dnieper River, not far from the channel. I spent the better part of an evening with the owner. He farms 1,250 hectares, mostly planted to potatoes. He has a 2nd farm, of the same size in northern Ukraine, near Chernihiv. He sells his potatoes under his own brand, mostly packaged in a brown bag. His major customer is Fozzy, whose major subsidiary is a supermarket called Silpo.
When I visited the farm, he employed 450 people, all from the village where the farm is located. At the time, the 450 people all owned small land plots that made up the 1,250-hectare farm, which the owner leases from his employees. This arrangement may have since changed, since the sale of farmland is now permitted, and the owner told me that he intended to exercise his purchase option contained in his lease agreements with the lessors/employees. Regardless, the entire farm is now temporarily occupied Russian territory. The farm in Chernihiv may or may not be operating, as it was not far from last year’s Russian invasion and his land might well be mined.
It is possible that his farm in Kherson escaped flooding because the farm might be far enough away from the channel. However, his farm relies on water from the North Crimea Canal for irrigation. Now, that water is gone. His farm lies in an area that many predict will become a desert. He, along with his 450 employees/landowners are now all at risk.
More Dam Analysis
Both “Reporting From Ukraine” and “The Latest Denys” have extensive analyses of the destruction of the dam, including:
· At 8:10 into Denys’ video he has a graph showing a sudden buildup of water levels, and pressure, behind the dam, in the weeks just before the dam failed.
· Denys also mentions that the Russians had cut Ukrainian access to the dam, preventing Ukrainian access to the dam and the powerhouse.
· “Reporting From Ukraine” dismisses the Russian accusation that the dam was destroyed by a Ukrainian missile attack, pointing out the Ukraine wasn’t successful in using HIMARS to destroy the Antonovskiy Bridge connecting Kherson with the Left Bank of the Dnieper.
· With regard to whether the dam destruction will delay Ukraine’s counteroffensive “Reporting From Ukraine” points out that the loss of the reservoir might well open up new attack vectors for Ukraine, forcing Russia to defend even more territory, possibly including areas where they have not built trenches.
Interview With Gen. Petraeus, U.S. Army (Ret.)/DW News
I’ve finally found a military expert who is brave enough to predict that Russia will crack under the planned Ukrainian offensive. I have come to the same opinion, but I have not been brave enough to describe my opinion, that is until a military expert of Gen. Petraeus’ stature articulates what I have been feeling intuitively.
Gen. Petraeus bases his conclusions on the fact that Russian troops have been on the line for nearly a year, they have not been withdrawn for training that incorporates new conscripts, and they’re fighting with increasingly outdated equipment like the post WW-2 T-54 tank. Ukrainian troops are fresh, many of them coming from training in the UK and Germany, they’re using new modern equipment, including Leopard tanks, infantry fighting vehicles including Bradleys, and lots of trench busting equipment, and they’re highly motivated.
BBC/Ukraine Interview With Serhii Plokhiy
Serhii Plokhiy, the Director of the Harvard Ukraine Research Institute (HURI) is America’s leading authority on Ukraine. He is the author of several books including “The Gates of Europe,” the best book that I have read on the history of Ukraine.
The interview is well worth reading. It took place a few days ago, when Plokhii was in London for an appearance at the Ukrainian Institute about his latest book about the war. In the interests of full disclosure the interviewer, Evganiia Shidlovska, is my wife’s daughter.
With respect to his warped and obscene views on Ukraine, Tucker now has a twin among 2024 Republican Presidential candidates, and it’s not Donald Trump. It is none other than Vivek Ramaswamy. Vivek is a very smart person, and I actually agree with him on some matters relating to the recent performance of the Federal Reserve, and his opposition to the use of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) guidelines now being applied by asset managers of major pension funds that individuals rely on for their retirement. However, there are many very smart people like Vivek who hold positions that run counter to every principle on which the U.S. was established. Ramaswamy, as evidenced by his position on the United States assisting a free country that is being invaded by a totalitarian neighbor, is one such person.

From Bohdan – “Now that the water is starting to settle down, it may be a good time to reassess the situation. I compared the destruction of rashists and their equipment to three prior periods, the height of the assault on Bakhmut, liberation of the right bank Kherson, and liberation of Kharkiv. The current rate resembles the height of the attack on Bakhmut, and is much higher than the prior liberation periods. However, the liquidation level before the liberation periods is similar to what is happening now. So it looks like we are entering the cusp.”
