The British Defense Minister called Putin and Zakharova "crazy". Russian President Vladimir Putin “suffers from an inferiority complex” and a “machismo view of the world,” suggested British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace. He also suggested that the Russian president is “crazy”. Wallace did not stop at criticizing Putin; another target was Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. “This lady, literally like in a comedy, makes statements every week, threatening to drop a nuclear bomb on someone or something like that.” Wallace acknowledged that Zakharova, unlike Putin, is a woman, but concluded: “She’s as crazy as he is.”
The Russian Defense Ministry says that "today, as a step of goodwill, the Russian military has completed tasks on Zmiinyi (Snake) Island and has withdrawn the garrison stationed there." Russia likely evacuated Snake Island because it was under near constant rocket attack and air strikes from Ukraine, and because they were losing supply ships from newly acquired Harpoon missiles coming from Denmark and the United States. The re-taking of Snake Island should be seen as an example of the good use that Ukraine puts to weapons supplied by the West, and perhaps as a partial template for opening the sea lanes to Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. Snake Island is also important because it cements future Ukrainian claims of potentially large oil & gas deposits under the Black Sea. The production that had come from the platforms off Crimea, that Ukraine recently destroyed, have been sanctioned since Russia took them in 2014, as part of their invasion of Crimea.
