The Latest Denis

As Denis’ latest report suggests, and as discussed in yesterday’s email, the Sverodonetsk/Lysychansk Complex may end up becoming a trap for the Russians.   As Denis’ report shows, yesterday Ukraine took back some of the commercial/residential area of Sverodonetsk which, at a minimum, may continue to tie down Russian forces and result in more Russian casualties and loss of equipment.   Even if Russia secures all of Sverodonetsk, as Denis predicts, the Russians will still have to cross the Svero Donets River and assault Lysychansk, located on the high ground.   So far, as Denis further illustrates, Russia has been unsuccessful in cutting off Ukrainian supply lines leading to Lysychansk.

INTERNATIONAL

CHCH TV:  Canada will provide $3,000 one-time financial assistance to refugees from Ukraine.  An adult will receive $ 3 thousand, and for one child under the age of 17 years, the assistance will reach $ 1.5 thousand.

Former Russian Intelligence Officer:  “There is no “Donetsk cauldron”, and apparently there will be no more. My prediction is that the second stage of the special operation, aimed at encircling and defeating the Donetsk group, failed. Why? Because the enemy controls his defensive operation. I call it the Kursk Bulge on the contrary.”

The EU has announced that it has finally approved the sixth package of sanctions against Russia.

●        The EU sanctions imply the refusal of the countries of the union from the import of Russian oil within 6 months, from the import of petroleum products within 8 months.

European border agency Frontex:  The number of refugees from Ukraine in the European Union has exceeded 7 million.  According to the agency, since the beginning of the war in February, 5.3 million citizens of Ukraine have fled to the European Union.  The total number of displaced persons who entered the EU, including those who are not citizens of Ukraine, is 7 million people.

Reuters:  To compensate for the decline in production in the Russian Federation, production will increase to 648 thousand barrels per day in July and August.

Prime Minister of Moldova:  Moldova is negotiating with the West on the supply of lethal weapons.

German Foreign Minister says that she supports granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership.  "This is a historic moment. We cannot close the doors to Ukraine."

MDR:  Deputy head of the European Parliament called for depriving Hungary of the right to vote in the European Union for violating the rule of law.  According to her, Hungary is abusing the principle of unanimity that exists in the EU as a means of blackmail.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise officially leaves Russia and Belarus. Previously, the company announced the suspension of activities in these countries.

Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament: The Parliament of Moldova banned broadcasting of Russian news, propaganda shows, as well as war films from the Russian Federation.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation recognized the dead, wounded and missing sailors from the cruiser 'Moscow' as participants in the war in Ukraine. Now the payments must be given to their families.

The US Department of the Treasury added Maria Zakharova, Irek Fayzullin, Maxim Reshetnikov, Alexei Mordashov and his sons, as well as a number of other Russian officials and businessmen, to the sanctions list.

The French Presidency of the EU announced that in the sixth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, in addition to a partial embargo on oil, shutdowns of banks and TV channels, there are:

●        restrictions against security and military personnel, industrial and technological sector organizations, oligarchs, propagandists and their families;

●        expanding bans on exports to the Russian Federation, including chemicals and high-tech goods;

●        a ban on the provision of services to the Russian oil sector;

●        a ban on consulting services for Russian operators.

Serbian President: 77% of Serbian citizens oppose the imposition of sanctions against Russia.

Austrian Chancellor:  Austria has created legal conditions for depriving Gazprom of a gas storage facility.

DPA:  The EU has abandoned sanctions against Patriarch Kirill because of Hungary.

Radio Liberty:  The EU has approved the sixth package of sanctions against Russia.  A partial embargo on Russian oil has been approved.  In addition, sanctions will be imposed against Patriarch Volodymyr Hundyaev and Sberbank.

The Washington Post:  Russians ransacked security systems at Chernobyl's high-tech nuclear labs.   Some of the stolen equipment was equipped with GPS trackers.  Some are still transmitting location data.   “We see that part of it is located on the territory of Belarus, along the border.  And some of them move across the territory of Belarus — Gomel, Minsk, and other places,” said the director of the Central Analytical Laboratory of the site.

Ukraine war kills another Russian General:  The administration of the Karachay urban district announced the death of a Russian Air Force Major General who died while doing his military duty.

CNN:  NATO Secretary General -  Russia is unlikely to be able to respond after the US sent advanced weapons to Ukraine,  Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with. Western aid strengthens Ukraine's self-defense.

●        The Washington Post:  In a joint briefing with Secretary of State, NATO Secretary General praised the "very significant support" of the United States, saying that their contribution "makes a difference on the battlefield every day."

Swedish Foreign Ministry:  Sweden will send anti-ship missiles, anti-tank weapons and 12.7 mm rifles, including ammunition. “This 4th support package also includes a financial contribution to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The total amount is more than 95 million euros. The war of Russia against Ukraine must stop!”

American general and ex-commander of US ground forces in Europe:  The culmination of hostilities in the Donbass will take place in August, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will switch to a counteroffensive in September, by the end of summer. Will the Russians be able to keep fighting after August? I don't see how.  They have problems with support (logistics - ed.), manpower, transport and equipment. I just don't know what their situation is with artillery and rocket munitions. We know they're running out of precision weapons. But I'm not sure about conventional artillery and rockets.

●        Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN: Russia is ready to provide safe passage for ships to export grain from Ukrainian ports.

●        CNN:  Senegalese President, who is also the head of the African Union, will meet with Russian President Putin in Sochi on Friday to discuss "freeing up grain and fertilizer stocks."  Sall is traveling to Russia because "the lockdown is particularly affecting African countries," his office said. It is also expected to discuss the efforts of the African Union "to help calm the war in Ukraine."

●        Anadolu: Turkey’s plan for the safe export of grain from Ukraine is to create a command center in Istanbul, through which they plan to deliver Ukrainian grain to world markets.

●        Reuters: UN chief of humanitarian aid arrived in Moscow to discuss with Russian authorities the clearing of a sea route for the export of grain and other food products from the Black Sea ports of Ukraine.

Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine:  The international charity telethon Save Ukraine — #StopWar, held live from Berlin and Kyiv, on May 31, raised about $202 thousand that  were transferred to the account of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

NATIONAL

British Intelligence:

●        Russian forces failed to achieve their initial objectives to seize Kyiv and Ukrainian centres of government. Following the failure of the initial plan, Russia adapted its operational design to focus on the Donbas.

●         Russia controls over 90% of the Luhansk region and is likely to complete control in the next two weeks. Russia has achieved these recent tactical successes at significant resource cost, and by concentrating force and fires on a single part of the overall campaign.

●        Russia has not been able to generate maneuver or movement on other fronts or axes, all of which have transitioned to the defensive.

●        Measured against Russia's original plan, none of the strategic objectives have been achieved. In order for Russia to achieve any form of success will require a continued huge investment of manpower and equipment and is likely to take considerable further time.

Institute for the Study of War (ISW)

●        Russian offensive operations against Slavyansk southeast of Izyum and west of Liman still made little progress and are unlikely to reach in the coming days

●        Russian troops continued their assaults on Severodonetsk and Lysychansk to establish full control over the Lugansk region. - The Russian army gradually moved around Avdiivka

●        Ukrainian counter-offensives in the northwest of the Kherson region pushed Russian troops to the east bank of the Ingulets River

●        The Kremlin continued to pursue inconsistent occupation measures in southern Ukraine, which indicates both widespread Ukrainian resistance

Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration: Ukraine will receive 330 million euros from the EU to support the population and economy. The country will receive assistance under the Program to Support Ukraine in Emergency Situations.

 AST:  Baltic energy system operators - Estonian Elering, Latvian Augstsprieguma tīkls (AST) and Lithuanian Litgrid - have entered into an agreement according to which they will no longer buy electricity in Russia.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights:  From the beginning of the war to June 1, the established losses are 9,151 civilian Ukrainians (a day earlier - 9,094), including 4,169 dead (4,149).

Ukravtodor:  Developed a road sign with three different pointers for Russians to F…….F.  The road sign indicating the direction to the Russians was sold at a charity auction for UAH 631,000 (about $21.3 thousand).  All collected funds will be sent to a special account of the National Bank, which will transfer the money to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Presidents Advisor:  We drew the Russian troops into a trap in Severodonetsk, pretending to "surrender" the city. Now the Russian command is in shock.  According to him, the Russian troops are now throwing all their available forces not to capture, but to hold Severodonetsk.

●        Daily losses of Russian troops now amount to 250-400 people killed. Moreover, there are more killed than wounded.

●        The US considers Crimea to be Ukrainian when they talk about restrictions for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to beat on targets by Western weapons in the territory of Russia.  Crimea is ours. Ukrainian. And they (Americans - ed.) know it. So it(weapons - ed.) will fly to the Crimea if there is a need.

General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:

●        Due to the large sanitary and irretrievable losses in military units and subdivisions of the 1st Army Corps of the 8th Combined Arms Army of the RF Armed Forces, measures for forced mobilization in the temporarily occupied territories of the Donetsk region continue.

●        In the Sloviansk direction, the Russian army is concentrating its main efforts on creating conditions for conducting an offensive. They are shelling civilian infrastructure in the areas of the settlements of Dovhenke, Virnopillia, Hrushuvakha, Velyka Komyshuvakha and Husarivka.

●        In the Lyman direction, the enemy fired at civilian infrastructure in the areas of Sosnove, Sviatohorsk, Staryi Karavan and Raihorodok. They conducted assault operations in the areas of the settlements of Studenok, Sosnove and Yarova, the fighting continues.

●         In the Severodonetsk direction, the Russians continue shelling Ukrainian positions and civilian infrastructure in the areas of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk.

●        Enemy assault aircraft launched airstrikes in the areas of the settlements of Ustynivka and Borovske. In addition, near Borovske, the enemy conducted assault operations, but failed.

●        In the Bakhmut direction, the enemy conducted offensive and assault operations in the areas of the settlements of Komyshuvakha, Mykolaivka, Vrubivka, Berestove and Bilohorivka, the fighting continues.

●        In the Yuzhnobuzhsk direction the Russian troops are destroying transport infrastructure facilities in possible directions of advancement of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in order to hold the defense lines,.

●        The Russian troops can increase air and missile strikes on critical infrastructure and try to seize the entire Black Sea coast of Ukraine up to Transnistria.

●        The Armed Forces of Belarus are mining forest roads, detours and bridges in the areas bordering Ukraine

●        Yesterday, 5 Russian attacks were repulsed in the Donetsk and Luhansk directions, 5 tanks, 3 artillery systems, 2 armored combat vehicles were destroyed. Air defense units shot down 3 Orlan-10 UAVs

State Emergency Service:  Austria handed over 11 units of fire fighting equipment and five reanimobiles to Ukrainian rescuers.  The civil service also received other equipment that should help put out fires in the frontline regions of Ukraine.

●        As a result of shelling in Tsirkuny, a hangar with grain burned down, and in Kharkiv - a timber warehouse

US Ambassador to Ukraine:  The United States will not influence the firing range of the HIMARS MLRS, which will be delivered to Ukraine.

Minister of Justice:  At least 3,000 hryvnias is needed to maintain one Russian prisoner of war for one month.  The expenses are justified - the conditions of prisoners' detention must comply with the Geneva Convention.

Defense Minister of Ukraine: Ukraine continues negotiations on the return of the defenders of Mariupol from Azovstal from captivity.

State Bureau of Investigation:  Investigators of the State Bureau of Investigation have completed a pre-trial investigation into criminal proceedings on suspicion of People's Deputy of Ukraine from the political party Opposition Platform for Life Viktor Medvedchuk.

●        Medvedchuk and the fugitive people's deputy Kozak are accused of facilitating illegal oil and gas production on the Black Sea shelf in the region of the temporarily occupied Crimea during 2015-2020.  Medvedchuk faces up to 15 years in prison.

●        Ukrainians will be able to clear cars at the entrance to customs control with automatic registration and receipt of documents and license plate or with the ability to pick up plates later.

Czech media:  Ukrainian offensive near Davydiv Brid from the Mykolaiv region can divide two Russian battalion tactical groups that occupied the right bank of the Dnipro in Kherson region.  Satellite imagery shows that Ukrainian forces crossed over pontoon bridges a few kilometers west of the village of Velyke Artakove, the Mykolaiv region.

The Armed forces of Ukraine neutralized the latest Russian kamikaze drone.  A high-precision Kub-BLA drone was downed by soldiers of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Transcarpathian Brigade.

●        The device was developed by the Kalashnikov concern and was first introduced in 2019. It can hover in the air and attack the target with a vertical dive. The "Kub" is also called a kamikaze drone, after launch it does not return to the operator, but hits the target either by diving or descending on a parachute, waiting for the right moment and explodes.

KHARKIV

The Armed Forces of Ukraine continued to take control of Tsupivka and began fighting for the liberation of the village of Velyki Prokhody, Kharkiv region.  Also, after taking operational control of the village of Nove, the entire territory of the Ruska Lozova of Derhachi united territorial community has been de-occupied.

DONETSK

Armed Forces of Ukraine captured a number of prisoners from the "Donetsk People’s Repulic" in Severodonetsk, despite the very difficult situation.  The prisoners joined for money and had no idea what unit they were in, and the others were mobilized, threatened with prison for refusing.

Adviser to the mayor of Mariupol: The Russians have begun to dismantle the rubble of residential buildings in Mariupol, which they previously fired on from tanks and filmed it on video. Yesterday, 6 bodies of dead civilians were removed - 5 men and one woman

●        This is the first recorded and indisputable fact of the murder of civilians in Mariupol for video content. The corpses were immediately taken to a mass grave in the village of Grape.

LUHANSK

Regional Military Administration: Severodonetsk is holding on and has every chance for a speedy release. Ukrainian defenders successfully carry out local operations, take prisoners, have everything necessary to drive the Russians out of the regional center.

●        The Russian military controls most of Severodonetsk. 20% of the city is a "grey zone". The Ukrainian military is holding positions in one section of the city.

●        During the 100 days of war in the Luhansk region, more than 400 km of roads, 70 schools and 50 kindergartens, 33 hospitals and 237 outpatient clinics were destroyed.

●        The fighting in Severodonetsk continues, the Russians launched an airstrike in Mirnaya Dolina.  Yesterday morning in Lisichansk, a Russian artillery shell killed a woman.

●        Russian troops continue shelling civilian infrastructure and Ukrainian military in Sievierodonetsk, Borivske, Ustynivka and Lysychansk.  In the area of ​​​​Metolkyne and Bilohorivka, the Russian army tried to conduct assault operations, suffered losses, and retreated to previous positions. 

●        Also, Russian troops are shelling in the areas of Zolote, Komyshuvakha, Mykolaivka, Bilohorivka and Vrybivka

Deputy Head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:  There is no need for the withdrawal of Ukrainian fighters from Severodonetsk at the moment, despite the threat of encirclement.

CNN: Regional Military Administration - About 800 people are hiding under the Azot chemical plant in Severodonetsk.  According to him, there are local residents in shelters who refused to evacuate. There are also children among them.

State Emergency Service:  Reports that the situation in the Luhansk region is on the verge of critical, because of Russian shelling.  During the day, the Russian troops damaged 16 houses in Hirne, 15 in Lysychansk and the building of the city hospital, in Vrubivka - 9, in Severodonetsk - 6, Novodruzhesk - 4, Mykolaivka - 2.  There are also no communications in the area. Water for the needs of the population is delivered by fire and rescue units.

ZAPORIZHIA

Departure of private vehicles to the temporarily occupied territories from the regional center is limited. Hundreds of cars are waiting in line to get out. Departure is limited due to the danger of shelling from the Russian troops and washed out roads in the village Kamianske.

Social Media:  Subscribers posted a video of explosions in the port of occupied Berdiansk, the Zaporizhzhia region. Explosions are reported to be heard throughout the day.  At the same time, the so-called "local authorities" claim that the city is allegedly clearing the port of mines.

RIA Novosti: Collaborators in the occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia region decided to "nationalize" the state property of Ukraine in order to increase the efficiency of their "power".

Enerhodar Mayor:  People were forced to throw away tons of vegetables right at the Russian checkpoint in Vasylivka, the Zaporizhzhia region.  The Russians do not let cars with goods out of Zaporizhzhia and the drivers lose their nerve".

Ukraine is considering a scenario for the complete shutdown of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant if control is lost over it.  Enerhoatom replied to the adviser to the Prime Minister of Ukraine who made the statement that it is impossible to turn it off either from a technical or safe, economic or political point of view.

DNIPRO

Regional Military Administration:  "The Russians attacked the private sector in Maryansky with cannon artillery, damaged houses and the gas pipeline. The State Emergency Service is engaged in extinguishing the fire. Information on potential victims will be available after the fire is extinguished."

●        Russian troops fired cluster munitions at the Pokrovska community of the Sinelnikovsky district, as well as the Zelenodolsk community. A shell from a "Hurricane" was found, there were no casualties.

●        Two children and their mother were wounded as a result of shelling from the artillery of Maryansky Zelenodolsk community.

●        Several private houses, a gas pipeline, and power supply systems were completely destroyed. The victims received medical assistance.

KHERSON

Head of administration" appointed by the Russians: In the temporarily occupied Kherson region, a branch of a Russian bank is being opened.  According to him, representatives of another 2-3 banks are expected in the region in the coming days, they will assess the situation and decide on the start of work.

MYKOLAIV

The economy of the Mykolaiv region is working at 20%, said military governor. According to him, since the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, many enterprises in the region were forced to suspend their work.

Operational command Pivden "South":  The Russians fired four cruise missiles on a previously destroyed railway bridge near the village of Trykhaty, the Mykolaiv region.  The Black Sea coast of the Mykolaiv region and the rear areas of the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were also attacked.

ODESA

A cannon from the Second World War was dismantled in Odesa due to statements by the Russian Ministry of Defense that a warehouse of weapons and ammunition was allegedly equipped near school No. 56.  The "weapon" turned out to be an anti-aircraft gun, which had stood on a pedestal near the school for many years.

SUMY

Regional Military Administration:  On June 2, after 17 hours of quiet, Russians began to fire mortars (20 times) at the Myropil territorial community, Sumy district. There are no casualties and destruction.
