Latest Denys
In order to avoid watching all of Denys’ latest, here are a couple of interesting items from Denys’ latest report:
· Ukrainian offensive in the South – Over the past several days, there have been several reports about Ukraine launching an offensive toward Kherson. Today is the first time that news of the offensive has made it into Denys’ report. You can see the status by going to the 15th minute in Denys’ report. I have always believed that recovering the temporarily occupied territory in Southern Ukraine should be Ukraine’s immediate goal, more important than Donbas. Ukraine seems to be pursuing a strategy of forcing Russia to draw its troops away from the South, in order to bolster its invasion of Donbas. If this report is true, that Ukraine is within 10km. (6 miles) of Kherson, Ukraine could go a long way toward putting Russian forces in the South in a very vulnerable position. I have also seen reports that the Ukrainian General Staff has advised people who are still in Kherson to leave for Crimea, using Russian-issued identity papers that allow them to do so, because it would make the re-taking of Kherson easier for Ukrainian troops
· Destruction of 3 Black Sea Gas Drilling Platforms – Starting in the 7th minute of Denys’ report, the map shows the location of the platforms. According to Denys Russia fortified the platforms. Their location, combined with the location of Snake Island, gives Russia substantial coverage over the approaches to the Port of Odesa where, provided they are protected, the grain shipments would originate. My question is whether the timing of the attack on the platforms, along with the attack on Snake Island, is being coordinated with Ukraine’s Western partners as a preliminary step toward organizing a convoy of grain carriers out of the Port of Odesa.
3 Articles
I have found all three of these articles very interesting:
· “Putin Prepares to Declare Himself a Conqueror” by Leonid Bershidsky (Bloomberg). Bershidsky always has interesting views about Russia and Ukraine.
· “Why War Fails – Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine & the Limits of Military Power” by Lawrence Freedman (“Foreign Affairs”). Freedman states, “And that includes both a country’s political leaders, who act as supreme commanders, and those seeking to achieve their military goals as operational commanders.” He goes on to describe how, throughout the war, Russian command & control has consistently failed. Today, there was a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) that there is another command shuffle taking place in Russia, reportedly including Gen. Dvornikov, aka the “Butcher of Aleppo.”
· “Why Russia Demonizes the Ukrainian Diasporas,” by Vic Satzewic and Ivan Kozachenko, Kozachenko states that he has no affiliation with any of the groups mentioned In this article. Members of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the U.S. are becoming more visible in elective politics. Rep. Victoria Spartz (Republican-Indiana) is the first Member of Congress who is a naturalized American citizen born in Ukraine. Karina Lipsman, the Republican candidate in the 8th District of Virginia, where I happen to live would, if she defeats the incumbent, Don Beyer, be the 2nd Member of Congress born in Ukraine.
