The Latest Denis
Denis’ description of the current situation in and around Severodonetsk, where the Russians may be close to taking over the entire city, might leave the Russians in a position not too dis-similar to the position of the Union Army prior to Battle of Fredericksburg, fought between December 11 & 15, 1862. There, the Union Army trying to get to Richmond, the Capital of the Confedracy, had to cross the Rappahannock River, move through the town of Fredericksburg, and assault Confederate positions on the high ground behind the town, a place called Marye’s Heights where Confederate General James Longstreet had placed his cannons. They were able to fire down on Union soldiers climbing up the incline. The Union Army was routed.
Today, the Siverskyi Donets River is the Rappahannock and the City of Lysychansk plays the role of both Fredericksburg and Marye’s Heights. From Lysychansk, on the far bank of the Siverskyi Donets Rover, Ukrainians can direct artillery fire down on Severodonetsk, and continue to bleed the strength of Russian forces. We’ll see how it plays out but, as I surmised yesterday, because of its topography,, Lysychansk is the key city in Luhansk, and not Severodonetsk.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s counteroffensive in Northern Kherson has moved 15 km. and liberate approximately 20 villages. As I mentioned yesterday, Kherson has far more strategic value to Ukraine than does Donbas.
Denis also mentioned a fundraising appeal, involving dog tags produced from metal from a downed Russian SU-34. The dog tags contain a schematic of the plane, and its serial number. Minimum contribution is $1,000.00
Has Ukraine Really Lost 20% of its Territory?
This is what Pres. Zelenskyy said during his daily speech. I think it depends on how one defines “lost.” As described a couple of days ago, in this email, much of the territory Zelenskyy refers to is still being contested, primarily by partisans. This is especially true in the cities of Kherson, Melitopol, Berdyansk, and even Mariupol. If Ukrainian counteroffensives materialize, partisans will increasingly coordinate their operations with the regular Army.
When thinking about what Pres. Zelenskyy said, about Ukraine losing 20% of its territory, it’s worth stopping, to describe the Ukrainian order of battle as I understand it. First, there is the Army, then territorial defense units where there are so many people wanting to join that it’s over-subscribed. Then there are volunteer groups, like my friend’s female sniper team, who often operate under instructions from the Army. Then there are partisans alongside all sorts of civil society groups, the latter operating both inside and outside of temporarily occupied territory. Ukrainian civil society groups have strong similarities to the Committees of Public Safety and Committees of Correspondence during the Revolutionary War for American independence, where the committees acted as almost shadow governments to the British colonial administration.
Everyone seems to have a theory on how this war will end. Here’s mine. It may end because the Ukrainian order of battle, especially the groups other than the Army, including territorial defense, volunteers, partisans, and civil society, will wear out the Russians trying to control temporarily occupied territories in Ukraine, causing the Russians to withdraw. There have been plenty of wars involving formations similar to territorial defense units, and partisans. The weaponization of civil society seems uniquely Ukrainian and prior to Ukrainian, American.
Most people seem to focus on the weapons Ukraine is getting. While the weapons are critical, in my opinion Ukraine’s order of battle will be a much bigger factor in Ukraine’s ultimate victory.
Destroyed Ukrainian Art
The following quote is from an article in today’s Kyiv Independent – “In 1937, Pablo Picasso, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest painters in history, said after visiting an exhibition in Paris: “I bow down before the artistic miracle of this brilliant Ukrainian.” He was talking about the folk painter Maria Prymachenko and her paintings in the “naive art” genre. Eighty-five years later, on Feb. 26 2022, a collection of 25 of her works almost burned up when the Russian military fired on a museum in the village of Ivankovo in Kyiv Oblast. The museum’s other exhibits, such as works of the Ukrainian embroiderer Hanna Veres, did not survive the fire.”
Kudos to Picasso who, in 1937, referred to Prymachenko not as a brilliant Soviet, but as a “brilliant Ukrainian.” Russia wants to wipe Ukraine, and Ukrainians, off the map, and Russia has been very clear about their intention. Targeting museums is one part of Russia’s strategy. For this reason, if there is any ceasefire or negotiated settlement involving ceding of Ukrainian territory, in my opinion Ukrainians will keep fighting, because they’ll see such an agreement as only a pause in Russia’s ultimate objective. Ukrainians now have the weapons to keep fighting, and there is nothing the West, or Russia, can do to stop them. Ukrainians have no other choice.
The article went on to say that part of the blame for the loss of these treasures must be laid on Ukraine itself, especially the Zelenskyy Administration. According to the article, “the highest levels of government made no other publicly known efforts to preserve the museum collections in the days leading up to the war. Yana Barinova, Head of the cultural department of the City of Kyiv, believes the protection of museum collections was not a top priority for the government. It was “part of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s efforts to prevent panic,” art historian Konstantin Akinsha believes.” A couple of days before the start of the war, Zelenskyy told Ukrainians to calm down, that everyone will be enjoying barbecue during the May Holidays. Here we are.

Neither the United States, Great Britain or Canada should abide by the EU decision to exempt Kirill from its latest round of sanctions.
