The Latest Denis
Denis’ latest report contains mostly bad news, with some good news coming from around Kherson. In front of Kharkiv, Russia is slowly pushing back Ukraine’s forces from areas they had previously liberated, located along the border with Russia. In Sieverodonetsk, Russia appears to have regained control of the center of the city, and they have also blown up the last bridge across the Svero Donetsk River connecting Sieverodonetsk with Lysychansk. By blowing the bridge, Russia appears to forego a frontal assault on Lysychansk, located on high ground, in favor of possibly attacking Lysychank from either the southeast or southwest. For Ukraine’s part, they have alternative means of evacuating Lysychansk. Otherwise, they would’ve withdrawn from Lysychansk before now. By continuing to stay in Lysychansk, Ukraine is likely causing significant Russian losses, in men who will almost certainly be replaced by conscripts and reservists with minimal or no combat experience, and equipment, likely to be replaced by older versions.
In discussing the fighting in Donbas, very little is discussed by the pundits of why, given Russia’s well-documented superiority in artillery, tanks and fixed wing aircraft, Russia is not advancing more rapidly in Donbas. Instead of answering this question, almost all the reporting focuses exclusively on Russia’s superiority in firepower, but not Ukraine’s evident superiority on the ground? There are reports that Russia can fire 10 rounds to Ukraine’s 1 round. With this type of superiority, why aren’t there Russian breakthroughs, like the breakthrough of the U.S. 3rd Army in front of St. Lo in August 1944, following massive artillery bombardment and carpet bombing by the Allied air force? Russia must be missing its latter-day version of Gen. Suvorov, otherwise known as Russia’s George Patton.
The answer to this question may be that Russia is fighting with depleted Battalion Battle Groups (BTG), manned by inexperienced conscripts. There are some reports of BTGs operating in Donbas with only 10% of their normal complement of 600 soldiers. There have also been reports of mutinies in Donbas, especially in units made up of soldiers from the people’s republics. Reportedly, there were similar mutinies during the Russian advance on Kyiv.
In Kherson, later in this email there is a report from a Ukrainian unit that they have advanced within 10km. of Kherson City. As stated in previous reports, and elsewhere, Kherson has far more strategic value to Ukraine than Donbas.
Gen. Wesley Clark, U.S. Army (Ret.)
In this video, starting in the 47th minute and lasting 4 minutes, Gen. Clark argues that it is time for NATO Members to start, “thinking the unthinkable,” which he describes as a physical NATO presence on the ground, for the same reason as NATO intervened in Bosnia in 1994. During the Balkan War Gen. Clark was Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Gen. Clark stated that NATO’s intervention in Bosnia included 25,000 U.S. troops. As Gen. Clark said, “NATO either goes out of area (as they did in Yugoslavia in 1993/1994) or NATO goes out of business.”
In his remarks, Clark cited Ukraine’s latest request for additional weapons, to be discussed tomorrow in Brussels at a meeting of Western defense ministers. In his remarks, Gen. Clark stated that the weapons Ukraine is requesting are simply not available, not from Warsaw Pact stocks, not from Ukrainian production, and not from the West. Later in this email there is a chart showing the weapons that Ukraine has, relative to the weapons Ukraine is requesting.
If the objective is for the war to end, with no ceding of territory by Ukraine, perhaps it is time for the West to “think the unthinkable.”
General Clark is a graduate of the famous Class of 1966 at the U.S. Military Academy, a Class that suffered substantial losses during the War in Vietnam. The Class of 1966 was memorialized in a book called “The Long Gray Line” by historian Rick Atkinson.
