News From the Battlefield
Despite limited information from official sources, the news that is coming out appears to indicate that Ukraine is making significant gains, both in the South and around Bakhmut. Here are some reports:
· “Reporting From Ukraine” describes apparent gains made by Ukraine in the south, and Russian losses, in personnel, ammunition and equipment, from flooding resulting from the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Dam. He also mentions the increased possibility of possible new Ukrainian attack vectors opening up for Ukraine, as a result of the draining of the reservoir behind the dam, including a possible assault to at least isolate Russian occupiers around the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
· A Canadian investigative reporter, citing a source called Volya, reports 18 – 19,000 Russian casualties in the Zaporizhia Region alone since Ukraine’s offensive began, including 4,500 – 5,000 killed. This report appears to be consistent with recent Russian casualty reports from Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, cited in these emails, showing daily Russian casualties of between 800 and 1,000/day.
· Ukrainian partisans operating near Melitopol blew up the railway line between Dzhankoy, a Russian supply hub in Northern Crimea, and Melitopol. If true, this would severely limit Russia’s ability to keep their troops operating in the Zaporizhia and S. Kherson regions with ammunition.
“How Putin’s War Became Russia’s War,” by Eugne Rumer in “Foreign Affairs”
I have always been annoyed by the pundits referring to Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine as “Putin’s War,” “Putin’s invasion,” etc. Russians are responsible.
Rumer shows how much of Russia’s “elite,” has remained loyal to Putin. Examples include Russian Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina, and others. “Elite” is another word that annoys me, when applied to Russians in official positions, oligarchs, and others. For example, Patriarch Kirill is frequently described as a member of the “elite,” when in fact he’s nothing more than a reconstituted cigarette smuggler.
Rumer says that Nabiullina may eventually be compared with Albert Speer, who kept the Nazi war machine running, in much the same way as Nabiullina, a person with undeniable brilliance, has kept the Russian economy afloat. A better analogy would be with Hjalmar Schacht, the Governor of the Reichsbank during virtually the entire period of Nazi rule, and for lengthy periods in the 1920s. His policies helped reduce German unemployment and provided the resources to help Germany rearm. Schacht ended up in the dock at Nuremburg. He was acquitted at Nuremburg but was later convicted by a West German court.
Rumer’s article is a very effective argument for the need for Russia not only to be defeated, but seen by the Russian Public as having been defeated.
