More on the Khakovka Dam Destruction
From Andrei – Andrei is a guest contributor, a Ukrainian, former private equity executive with Carlyle and Barings in Moscow, and former officer in the Soviet Army with service in Angola. Here is what he had to say about the dam destruction (sent on June 7th) –
“The theory that the Ukrainians blew up the dam is wrong for a number of reasons:
It would be a crime to do this without a proper warning to the Ukrainian civilians and soldiers. The economic and environmental impact of this disaster is comparable to the one of a nuclear explosion. No political or military leader in Ukraine would do it as it would be suicidal for them. Especially without a good reason (like saving Kyiv from the immediate danger).
It does not help Ukrainian armed forces AT ALL. Now crossing of Dnipro River in that region (which was a super difficult task even under "normal" circumstances) would be impossible for a minimum of two weeks. All existing pontoon bridges were likely destroyed and we did not have many of those to start with.
The Ukrainian armed forces have no means of destroying such a formidable piece of engineering. Even dozens of Storm Shadows or gliding bombs would only scratch it. Besides, nobody has seen or heard of any of any incoming projectiles. Blowing the dam up would have required weeks of preparation and dozens of tons of explosives to be placed inside the concrete structures (and possibly under water). Only the Russian occupiers had both the reason and the means to do it.
The fact that the Russians down river were not warned and failed to evacuate on time (and that Crimea will suffer terribly from a draught as a result) does not prove they did not blow up the dam. It just proves (yet again) that they do not care about their soldiers and civilians. The whole affair proves that they are scared shitless of what is coming for them and use desperate measures as a result -- whatever the cost.
All of the above is obvious to anybody with half a brain. Confirming the basic facts would have taken a day max. So, I am bewildered by the international reaction so far.”
I agree with the “half a brain” comment. Some subsequent revelations:
· As is their practice, the international press glommed onto the idea that the destruction of the dam will delay Ukraine’s counterattack, and then it was continually repeated. As Andrei has said, the possibility of Ukraine launching a major attack across the Dnieper “would be a super difficult task even under “normal” circumstances.” At best, the possibility of a Ukrainian attack across the Dnieper, served to keep Russian forces on the Left Bank tied down. Now, many of those same Russian forces have been trapped in the flooding and there equipment and ammunition have been lost. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces that may have attacked across the Dnieper have likely been redeployed to places like Orikhiv, just east of the reservoir, where “Reporting From Ukraine” has reported that Ukraine has opened an 16km long x 3km deep gash in the Russian lines. Additionally, the draining of the reservoir may open up new attack vectors for Ukraine.
· Dust – As the reservoir drains, and more of the river bottom is exposed, there may be a problem with dust. The prevailing wind this time of year is from the northwest, that would blow dust in the direction of Melitopol, a possible objective of a Ukrainian counterattack.
· Explosion at the dam – Just before the dam gave way an American spy satellite detected a large explosion at the dam. There is now physical access to the dam from the right bank, controlled by Ukraine. There are indications that in July 2014, an American spy satellite took a photo of the launching of the BUK missile that brought down MH-17.
· Coverage of the rescue operations in Kherson, from the Kyiv Independent. Well worth reading.
Polina Rayko
The late Polina Rayko was a self-taught naïve artist who, as a way of dealing with the depression resulting from the death of her husband, painted the inside of her house with scenes from her life. In addition to not having any formal art teaching, she painted from memory. She lived in Oleshky, a town in Kherson Oblast on the left bank of the Dnieper occupied by Russia. Oleshky, along with her house, has been inundated by floodwaters from the dam. This is what was lost. I doubt the Russians care. I doubt further that Russians would even understand what was lost. It reminds me of this comment by the Ottoman commander in the movie “Lawrence of Arabia,” where he asks one of his subordinates to comment on Lawrence’s “interesting face” (30 seconds into the video).
News From the Battlefield
There seems to be a difference of opinion between Denys and “Reporting From Ukraine” about a Ukrainian attack in which 2 Ukrainian Leopard II tanks were disabled and other Ukrainian vehicles were lost. Here is both the Latest Denys and his previous report. I suggest watching them consecutively Denys’ conclusions about what happened during this incident are very different from an account of the same incident by “Reporting From Ukraine” where, among other things, he reports that the 2 Leopards were only slightly damaged, and they’ve since been repaired and returned to the fight. It is also interesting to note that the Russians couldn’t follow up on their “success,” allowing Ukraine rescue recover the 2 Leopards.
As mentioned earlier “Reporting From Ukraine” states that Ukraine has opened a 16km wide x 3km deep gash in the Russian defenses opposite Orikhuv. A report today shows that Ukraine has liberated Chasiv Yar, near Bakhmut. The video gives one a good sense of what the countryside looks like, in early Summer in Ukraine. There is also a glimpse of the vaunted “dragon’s teeth.” As has been reported previously, Russian contractors, responsible for placing the dragon’s teeth didn’t anchor the dragon’s teeth to the ground, making them useless in stopping tanks.
“Defense in Depth”/Dominic Nicholls “Daily Telegraph” – This is a weekly podcast, devoted this week to irregular warfare during the war in Ukraine. Partisans have played a significant role in the war from the start, especially around Melitopol, and Ukrainian 5th columnists have been present inside Russia since 2014, at the end of the Revolution of Dignity.
Russian Casualty Reports – As shown in the report on Russian losses, compiled by Bohdan later in this email, Russian losses are now approaching 1,000/day. It’s possible that the increase is the result of Ukrainian incursions, around Bahmut and in the south east of the rapidly depleting reservoir.
Timothy Ash’s Latest - Ukraine Reconstruction
I completely agree with Ash’s suggestion, that it is imperative that the West needs to break the Gordian Knot, that prevents the $350 billion in frozen Russian Central Bank assets to be applied to Ukraine’s reconstruction. Bill Browder has said that this will be his next “life’s work.” I wouldn’t bet against him.
