Last night one recipient reported that he was having trouble opening the Latest Denys when I use a link. Therefore, I will try to copy/paste directly –
Once again, the major item of interest is the thermal imaging on Denys’ map showing artillery hits.
Article in “Spectator” on the Origins of Russian Brutality A discussion about Ukraine and the origins of the brutality displayed by the Russian Army in Bucha, Irpin and elsewhere, between Serhii Plokhii, Head of the Harvard-Ukraine Research Institute and eminent historian of Ukraine, and Sir Antony Beevor, eminent military historian whose new book about the Russian Civil War is coming out in September. Hint – think the Mongols.
George Will in the Washington Post, “Give Ukraine More Artillery and Let the (U.S.) Navy Break the Russian Blockade” I completely agree with the first part, giving Ukraine more artillery. Regarding the second part, the U.S. Navy breaking the Russian blockade the Turks, who controls entry into the Black Sea via the Bosporus, might have something to say. I also completely agree with what Will said, about not being blackmailed by Russian nuclear threats, “If Putin’s nuclear saber rattling deters the nations supporting Ukraine from using their ample naval competencies to execute a humanitarian policy, his contempt for the West will be ratified, and his appetite for additional aggressions will be whetted.” I would take Will one step further, NATO shouldn’t be deterred by Putin’s nuclear saber rattling to do whatever it takes to ensure Ukraine’s victory. Anything less than Ukraine’s victory will be seen as a NATO defeat by Russia.
7/7 Sitrep (my comments in bold face)
Several historians, Ukrainian and International, have offered their interpretations of current events in Ukraine through a historical philosophical lens. Their discussions, or better put, dissections of notions such as fascism, nationalism, and authoritarianism reveal historical roots enmeshed in the ideas driving the invasion and resistance. Their hypothesis enables viewing this conflict on a grand scale, even though it is a mean dirty war and there is nothing grand in wanton destruction, killing and maiming.
However, history reveals as much as it obscures. For example, the tale of two areas currently under Russian occupation - half of southern and half of eastern Ukraine. In southern Ukraine - Mykolaiv to Mariupol there is a constant presence and illumination of acts of resistance in social media, official sources, and the mass media. In eastern Ukraine from Izium to Donetsk there is a steady flow of information from official and media sources. There are few if any social media posts telling stories.
Historical accounts currently in vogue treat the south and east of Ukraine homogeneously. In that sense they obscure. The biggest disservice currently is that ever-increasing numbers of acts of resistance reported through social media from the south are ignored. Concurrently official and media sources pay attention to and relate the constant flow of acts of collaboration from the east.
Selective myopia is driven by perceptions not facts. Perceptions are dangerous when it comes to understanding today and the likely nature of tomorrow.
Another example. We all remember the 60-kilometer Russian tank column stuck outside of Kyiv in February. The perception was that this was the result of Russian incompetence, Ukrainian resistance, and bad field conditions. All three of these perceptions are right. But the reason for the column getting bogged down was, after February 24th, Belorusian partisans systematically derailing supply trains destined for the invading army. Without supplies the Russians stopped. This information has only come out recently.
Which brings us to the overriding perception of the last few days. Russia is grinding out a victory. In reality, both sides are approaching exhaustion. Two days ago, Ukraine’s commander of the armed forces issued an order limiting freedom of movement. His motivation was to get his hands on as many experienced Ukrainian combatants as possible. He knew that on the front soldiers were dying and were exhausted. Replacements were needed. That he went about this in the wrong way is another story.
The situation is bad for Ukraine, but it is worse for Russia. Yesterday Russia once again fired rockets at civilian targets. Of the twenty rockets they fired 7 rose a few hundred meters and then looped back and exploded near the launchers. Yesterday, Ukraine with precision artillery and ballistic rockets provided by its allies destroyed another three Russian munitions stores.
Our view is that Ukraine is the combatant grinding out the painful victory, and not Russia.

Alaska was fairly bought and paid for, a concept that the rulers of today’s Russia are incapable of understanding. Given the treatment of Russia’s ethnic minorities, especially those living in Siberia William Seward, our Secretary of State who negotiated the purchase of Alaska, did the Native Americans who live in Alaska a huge favor. My question is whether the Russians are also interested in Fort Ross, located in today’s California. If so, there might be a “deal” somewhere there.
