Our Russian Neighbors
A family who are originally from Russia lives across the street from us. We just found out today that they had sponsored a Ukrainian family who are now living near Atlanta, GA. Good for them.
Fighting Ends by Autumn – Robert Fox, “Evening Standard”/John Spencer, Modern War Institute (Podcast with Alina Frolova & Ukrainska Pravda)
Fox and Spencer come to this conclusion from two different directions, Spencer from a military perspective; Fox from the diplomatic and economic perspectives. As we’ve said before, Ukraine has already won. Ukraine defeated Russia on April 3, 2022, when Russia ended its assault on Kyiv, just as the former Soviet Union won in December 1941, when they stopped Nazi Germany at Borodino, at the Gates of Moscow, or the United States defeated Japan at the Battle of Midway in early June 1942. As with these two examples since April 3, 2022 plenty of fighting has taken place, and is going on today, and will continue to take place in the foreseeable future. The only question that remains is when the fighting stops and what are the terms.
Spencer called the Battle of Kyiv “the most decisive battle of the Modern Era since the end of World War II.” Spencer believes that the fighting will stop when the Russian Army “culminates,” which he defines as the point at which the Russian Army can no longer defend the territory it has already taken. Spencer thinks this will happen before the end of the year, but he says it is conditioned upon continued supply of weapons and consumables, mostly ammunition, from the West.
Fox believes that the fighting will stop by the end of the year - temporarily. He thinks there could be a Korea-like DMZ, but it doesn’t seem that he’s predicting on which side of a “DMZ” Crimea would lie, or how it would be secured.
Fox said several other compelling things, including (my additional thoughts in bold face):
· The roles of Norway and Saudi Arabia in the peace process. He bases the roles of Norway and Saudi Arabia on the fact that Norway and Saudi Arabia have the two largest sovereign wealth funds, that Ukraine considers to be major sources to finance Ukraine’s reconstruction. If that is the case, then how much leverage would these two countries have over getting recalcitrant countries and international organizations to agree to the application of frozen Russian Central Bank assets to finance Ukraine’s reconstruction?
· Fox said that the big UK banks are already establishing their presence in Ukraine, in anticipation of the large financing needs and the need for related services.
· The meeting of the UN General Assembly this September may be the place where serious negotiations will take place. Fox believes that on the Russian side it will not be Lavrov who represents Russia. He believes that it will be someone from Putin’s “inner circle,” the Siloviki.
· Fox says he often broadcasts on news outlets in the Middle East. He said that they had been taking the Russian line until recently, but that their pro-Russian rhetoric has been softening of late. One possible reason is the aftereffect of the Wagner/Prigozhin Insurgency.
· Fox said that there is a large number of Russians who are leaving Crimea, due to the deteriorating security situation there and the lack of fresh water. He said he would not be surprised if Ukraine organizes partisan groups in Crimea, similar to the partisan warfare that has continued in Melitopol throughout the war. If so, there would likely be plenty of support for partisan operations in Crimea, especially in northern Crimea, populated largely by Ukrainians, and between Simferopol and Feodosia, populated largely by Crimean Tatars. There is also approximately 1.5 million Crimean Tatars residing in Turkey. They play role in Turkish politics, and they may be a source of financial and clandestine military support for a Crimean insurgency.
My goal in life is to have an office like Robert Fox’s.
Russia – Africa Summit
Russia cannot be pleased with the outcome of the recent Russia – Africa Summit. First, compared to the last Summit in 2019 there were significantly fewer countries attending. Then yesterday, President Ramaphosa of S. Africa, traditionally one of Russia’s strongest allies in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the African Union that has, in its Charter, a prohibition against a member state invading a neighbor, demanded that the Black Sea Grain Corridor be re-opened. Russia has always relied on African support at the UN, where most African members abstain rather than voting against Russian interests. We’ll see what happens In September, at the next UN General Assembly meeting, but it seems as if African support for Russia is beginning to fray. What role, if any, the recent Wagner/Prigozhin mutiny has played in this is anyone’s guess.
I have been working in Sub-Saharan Africa for the past 13+ years. I have been going out of my way, to increase the Africa quotient of the number of recipients of these emails.
News From the Battlefield
Both the “Latest Denys” and “Reporting From Ukraine” focus on the fighting around the recently-liberated town of Staromaiorski, in western Donetsk Oblast with Berdiansk the likely objective.
Their respecttive tactical maps show that Ukraine has taken significant territory. The major question remains is the manning levels inside the Russian defense lines.
Further west, south of Orikhiv, Ukraine may be within 12 miles of Tokmak, a major Russian logistical hub.
Later, Bohdan reports that Ukraine hit yet another Russian ammunition dump, this time southwest of the Russian naval base at Sevastopol. Hopefully it contained a large number of cruise missiles.
Ukraine still hasn’t committed most of their Western-trained troops and their equipment, a subject that the pundits often gloss over.

"Ukraine has already won." War doesn't work that way. Moral victories don't count. We won nearly all our battles in Viet Nam, but in the end the enemy was in possession of the field. Although, in view of subsequent events, it is technically correct to say the soviets won their war by defeating the Wehrmacht at the gates of Moscow, in fact the communist victory was only made possible by America's colossal aid program and by the Japanese decision to attack America, rather than the Soviet Union. There being nothing approaching that level of aid in the offing for Ukraine, the rows of A-10s and attack copters continuing to gather dust, this war is likely to be a very close run thing.
So Africa is now unhappy with Russia - good news. Wonder what that means for Wagner army? Be nice if Africa got wise to the Chinese who only take what they wish for little money.
