Drones

I have an old friend who is an instructor at a school for drone operators.   This is their Facebook Page.    My friend is currently in the process of raising $6,000.00, to allow the school to purchase a new drone for instructional purposes.   Drones are becoming increasingly important to Ukraine’s war effort, as the war continues to shift toward artillery.   Ukraine has become very adept at modifying commercial drones, so they can be used for both intelligence and to carry ordinance.

Why Ukraine Must win - Yaroslava Mahuchikh

It is always important that we constantly remind ourselves why it’s critical that Ukraine win and drive the Russians out of Ukraine.  Last Tuesday, Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the Silver Medal in the Women’s High Jump at the World Track & Field Championships, currently being contested in Eugene, Oregon.   This is a short video of her final jumps plus an interview with NBC Sports.  A second Ukrainian finished 4th.

Why Ukraine Must Win – Interview with Sergey Karagonov (New York Times)

Sergey Karagonov is the academic director of the faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at Moscow’s Higher School of Economics and honorary chairman of Russia’s premier nongovernmental think tank.   The interviewer is Serge Schmemann, long-time Moscow Bureau Chief of the New York Times.   In the lead to the interview Schmemann says, “Since the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February, he has written articles and given interviews in broad support of President Vladimir Putin, so I interviewed him to better understand Mr. Putin’s aims in the conflict. Ukraine continues to suffer, and those who hope to support Ukraine must understand those aims as it tries to confront Russia’s aggression.”

If there was ever a reason to stop Russia here and now, no one articulates that reason better than Sergey Karaganov.

The Latest Denys

Three highlights:

·       Early in Denys’ latest video he shows photos of the damage to the Antonovskiy Bridge caused over the last 2 days by HIMERS strikes.   The bridge crosses the Dnieper River above Kherson.   Ukraine’s failure to destroy the bridge was instrumental to Russia’s ability to occupy Kherson early in the war, as well as to occupy a large area along the right bank of the river.    Perhaps the best solution might be to time a HIMERS strike to when a Russian armored column is crossing the bridge, hopefully containing lots of ammo..  

·       The tactical map starts at 8 minutes into the video.   Thermal imaging that shows artillery hits shows a much lower level of Russian artillery activity than was the case a couple of weeks ago.   Perhaps Ukraine’s destruction of several Russian ammo dumps in the Donbas area is having an effect.

·       Denys shows a picture of a Russian ammunition dump near Kherson that appears to be under attack.  According to a report in today’s New York Times, today Ukraine destroyed 6 Russian ammo dumps in Southern Ukraine.

·       Denys’ video contains pictures of an interview Lavrov gave to Russian media.   Lavrov looks dreadful.  Maybe Lavrov is the one who is ill.

La Voce di Rovigo:  Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced his resignation.  "In the light of the vote taken by the Senate last night, I ask you to suspend the meeting, as I am on my way to the president of the republic to inform him of my intentions," Draghi said.

Politico: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi - The US Congress intends to recognize the Russian Federation as a sponsor of terrorism if the State Department does not do this.

Spiegel: Nord Stream AG - After a maintenance period, Russia resumed gas deliveries to Germany via the "North Stream-1".

Aspen Security Forum: 

●        Director of the CIA - There is no intelligence that Vladimir Putin is unstable or in bad health.

○        "There are lots of rumours about President Putin's health and as far as we can tell he's entirely too healthy

○        Russian President Vladimir Putin would be proved wrong in a belief he can win a bloody war of attrition against Ukraine - as he had previously been proved wrong to assume his forces could capture Kyiv within the first few days of the invasion.

●        The United States Air Force Chief of Staff hints at an early supply of modern fighters to Ukraine.

○        “There are American (planes), there is Gripen from Sweden, there is Eurofighter or Rafale. There are several different platforms that could go to Ukraine.  “But I can’t tell you exactly what it’s going to be.”

Fox News:  Several US senators have called on the Pentagon to provide Ukraine with modern fighters. This is stated in a letter from politicians.  Tammy Duckworth, Roger Wicker, Richard Blumenthal, Robert Portman, and Lindsey Graham signed it. They are all from different parties.

●        The letter was sent to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley.

LEGO released figurines in the image of Ukrainian military women.  The Brothers Brick company, which develops historically reliable constructors of military subjects, dedicated its new figurines to medical girls in Ukraine.

DW: German Ministry of Foreign Affairs - The statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the alleged geographical expansion of the tasks of the war against Ukraine is propaganda

●        "...This time, it is because of the military support, they are saying. But they have been attacking Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine before,".

●        State Department spokesman Ned Price:  The United States will not allow the annexation of Ukrainian territories to go unpunished.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs:  The EU has allocated another 500 million euros in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Le Figaro: In France, the Russian propaganda agency Sputnik News went bankrupt after the imposition of European sanctions and entered the procedure for forced liquidation.

Ukrainian Defense Minister:  In the Rammstein format, another step has been taken to strengthen the defense of Ukraine.

●        "By agreement with colleagues, we are keeping the intrigue regarding the lion's share of existing and new assistance packages, which include the supply of weapons, ammunition, training of our soldiers and much more. First they will be felt by the enemy on the battlefield. A positive sign of the meeting is the new commitments of the partners. touch the land, the sea, and the sky".

Head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff: Donbas is not lost to Ukraine.  According to him, military operations now underway in the Donbas are a war of attrition.

The Guardian:  The UK has allowed Ukrainian children to enter unaccompanied by their parents, A child will be able to independently enter the country if one of his parents or guardian confirms that it is in the interests of the child.  At the same time, British citizens who agree to take in a child from Ukraine must undertake to take him for at least 3 years (instead of 6 months in the case of adults) or until the child is 18 years old.

Multinational defense company Raytheon UK will build a new center in Scotland to develop laser weapons aimed at small attack drones.

●        "We have all seen that asymmetric threats such as drones, missiles, artillery and mortars are a major problem and the demand for cost-effective lasers to defeat them is growing", said Michael Hofle, senior director of high-energy lasers at Raytheon Intelligence and space.

Global Times:  China and the United States are on the verge of a big war over Biden's decision on Taiwan. Thus, the PRC may launch an invasion in response to the actions of the US authorities to provide military support to Taiwan, and the consequences for Washington will be severe.

Bloomberg:  The International Criminal Court may charge Russia with Russian crimes in Ukraine this winter.

Lithuania will transfer additional M113 and M577 armored personnel carriers, as well as ammunition, to Ukraine, – the country's Defense Ministry says.

Bundestag deputy criticizing the proposal of the German government - Germany plans to transfer to Ukraine 1 tank per month, and from October 2023 - 3. A total of 20 Leopard 2 tanks will be given to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The permanent representatives of the EU countries approved the 7th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, it included a ban on the supply of gold from the Russian Federation.

Novinkyi: Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has announced that the government has decided to equip the Czech army with the latest American F-35 fighter jets.

Newsmaker: Moldovan President - Moldova will hold a referendum on the country's accession to the European Union. Residents of the country will be able to express their position on European integration.

Head of the European Commission:  Nord Stream- 2" is not certified and cannot be operated under any circumstances.  She also added that the" Nord Stream -1 "turbine is on its way and will return to Russia on time, on July 24. "Russia has no excuse not to resume gas supplies through the pipeline,"- Ursula von der Leyen said.

●        EU gas storages are 62% full, - said the head of the European Commission, presenting the gas action plan.

●        The flow of Russian gas to the EU is no more than one-third of the figures for July last year, she noted.

●        The European Commission considers a complete shutdown of Russian gas as a likely scenario and calls for preparations for this to begin, said Ursula von der Leyen.

●        The European Commission has proposed a new legislative instrument and a European plan to reduce gas demand in order to reduce gas consumption in Europe by 15% by next spring, - says the statement on the EC website.

Pentagon:  The United States will provide Ukraine with four more HIMARS multiple rocket launchers as part of new military assistance

●        The US and allies allocate more than 20 HIMARS MLRS to Ukraine, 12 of which have already been transferred

●        The Pentagon announces that they are transferring HIMARS MLRS to Ukraine with a range of 80 km, as it is previously stated.

●        There is no talk of deliveries of long-range missiles with a range of up to 300 km.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan expects that a memorandum on the grain issue will be signed at a meeting of delegations of the UN, Ukraine, Türkiye and the Russian Federation this week.

●        "We have mediation as a host. We have been working on the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea for a long time. I discussed this issue several times with Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelenskyi . Our ministries of foreign affairs and national defense also held meetings with their interlocutors. Polish Cabinet of Ministers: The Government of Poland approved the proposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to simplify the rules for obtaining a ""Polish card"" for citizens of Ukraine who received asylum after the Russian invasion.

●        According to the new rules, which will come into force on July 29, the document for obtaining a ""Polish card"" can be submitted in any office of one of the 16 voivodships in accordance with the place of residence in Poland, and not as in the previous rules - only in Polish consulates outside the country.

Reuters: Oil prices fell by more than 1 dollar per barrel due to the efforts of the global central banks to curb inflation and ahead of the expected increase in crude oil reserves in the US due to a decrease in demand for products.

The US Agency for International Development USAID will provide Ukraine with another $169 million in aid. The funds will go to humanitarian support.

Operational Command Pivden "South":  Ukrainian aviation hit strongholds, accumulations of manpower and equipment of Russians in the Kherson region, and twice hit ammunition depots in the south.

The UK intelligence report 11:43 AM:

●        Russian and separatist forces continue to attempt small scale assaults along the Donbas front line. Russian forces are likely closing in on Ukraine's second biggest power plant at Vuhlehirska , 50km north - east of Donetsk.

●        Russia is prioritising the capture of critical national infrastructure , such as power plants . However , it is probably also attempting to break through at Vuhlehirska , as part of its efforts to regain momentum on the southern pincer of its advance towards the key cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

Ukraine’s Security Service has detained a Kharkiv resident who provided the occupiers with data about the location of the Kryvyi Rih airport.  It turned out to be an official of one of the most powerful industrial giants in the region.

●        "Since the beginning of the full-scale aggression of Russia, the man collected intelligence on the deployment and relocation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the south. Vinnytsia Regional Military Administration: The number of people killed in the missile strike in Vinnytsia increased to 26 people.

Enthusiasts have issued a postage stamp dedicated to the evacuation by train from Irpen.  The stamp depicts the Irpen-Kyiv train under the M62 diesel locomotive.

Operational summary of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine 6:46 PM:

●        In the Sloviansk direction, the Ukrainian military again successfully repulsed the enemy’s assault actions in the area of Bohorodychne. At the same time, many settlements in the region were fired upon by the Russians.

●        In the Kramatorsk direction, assault operations in the areas of Hryhorivka and Spirne ended for the Russians in losses and retreat.

●        In the Bakhmut direction, by fighting, the enemy is trying to create favorable conditions for establishing control over the city of Bakhmut and the territory of the Vuhlehirsk TPP.

●        In the Pivdennyi Buh direction, the enemy is concentrating the main efforts on preventing the advance of Ukrainian troops deep into the territory temporarily occupied by him.

●        The Russians again failed in another reconnaissance in force in the Novoselivka Druha area of the Donetsk region, suffered losses and retreated.

The American company NDI conducted sociological research in Ukraine.

Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense:  The Russians continue to steal Ukrainian grain.

US Defense Secretary:  The fighting in Ukraine is at a critical stage, and the West will continue to look for ways to provide long-term military assistance to Kyiv.

Reuters:  Western creditor governments have announced that they will suspend servicing the debt of Kyiv from August 1 until the end of 2023. Ministry of Health:  Cardiac surgeon Borys Todurov performed a very complicated operation - he removed a fragment of a projectile from the heart of a Ukrainian soldier. The heart continued to beat during the operation. The soldier was brought by plane to Kyiv from the front lines.

OPAL Gastransport:   The 'Nord Stream' gas pipeline, after scheduled maintenance, which will end on the morning of July 21, will operate at 40% capacity, as before the shutdown.*

Journalist Oleksandr Nevzorov published an appeal by the head of the Belarusian bureau "Russia Today" to the Minister of Defense of Belarus with a request to assist in the production of a fake story about "the destruction of HIMARS MLRS by Russian troops."

1. "The launcher model will be delivered by the Russian side on July 22, 2022 to the Obuz-Lesnovsky military training ground on the day of the staged shooting", – the message reads.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergey Lavrov, said that Russia's geographical tasks in the war with Ukraine have changed - "now it is not only the DPR and the LPR, but also a number of other territories."

●        At the same time, he added that if Western countries supply long-range weapons to Ukraine, these ""geographic tasks will be pushed even further.""

Putin has agreed to head the board of the new Russian movement of children and youth, reports Russian media.

Russia will help LPR and DPR, but it will take years to put things in order there," - Putin said.

Military administration of Kriviy Rih:  Near the village of Koshevo, Kriviy Rih district, Dnipropetrovsk region, a Russian tank fired at two harvesters in a field.  “An unprecedented event occurred today: two of our harvesters were harvesting grain near the village of Koshevo, an enemy tank drove out and began to aim at these harvesters,” Vilkul wrote.

Regional Military Administration::  833 thousand tons of wheat and 364 thousand tons of barley have already been harvested in the Dnipropetrovsk region.  "Unfortunately, there are fields from which we will not be able to harvest. National Police: As a result of Russian shelling in the Kherson region, fields and forests are burning, according to the police of the region.  In recent days alone, more than 230 hectares of wheat burned out in two districts and 10 hectares of forest were damaged by fire. The Russians specifically do not allow rescuers or local residents to extinguish fires.

The Security Service exposed a collaborating official who helped Russia transfer armored vehicles from Crimea to the Kherson region.  Since the beginning of the full-scale aggression, investigations of more than 800 criminal proceedings regarding collaboration.

Kherson journalist Konstantyn Ryzhenko:  Quoting the occupation authorities - Today, the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck a new blow on the Antonivskyi Bridge in Kherson.
