EBook
We sent out the Ebook last night, to all those who have generously supported us. If anyone who expected to get a copy didn’t get one please let me know. There were some discrepancies in the recipient list that was generated by the Stripe payment system. I think I picked up everyone.
Also, the Ebook consists of Part I and Part II. If you either didn’t get both Parts I and II, or got both but not the other, please let me know.
Finally, the name of the Editor of the Economist Magazine, Zanny Minton Beddoes, was regretfully misspelled. My apologies to her, but fortunately she’s not on the recipient list.
Thank you all again for your support!
A question asked by Daria Kaliniuk, a well-known Ukrainian anti-corruption activist, to U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan at yesterday’s NATO Public Forum in Vilnius. Sullivan’s facial expression, when Kaliniuk was speaking, speaks volumes.
However, it is important not to adversely affect relationships un-necessarily with people like Jake Sullivan who are important to Ukraine’s cause. Judging by Sullivan’s response, Daria was taking a risk here.
Pres. Zelenskyy has plenty of reasons to be disappointed by the Biden Administration, but perhaps this is better taken up in private, especially given the timing. Congress is currently taking up the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), including funding for Ukraine. There are several Members of Congress, mostly Republican but some Democrats, who would like to cut funding for Ukraine.
Personally, I believe that the Biden Administration is afraid not only of Russia losing, as Daria Kaliniuk alleged in her remarks, but they’re more afraid of the consequences in Russia, when the Russian people see that Russia has lost. Allowing Richard Haas, and others, to conduct back-channel meetings with the Kremlin concerning Ukraine, was a bad decision in my opinion. Haas is likely someone who cannot conceive of a world without Russia, and maybe even without Putin. As such, their end game would likely be a settlement that would require Ukraine to give up Ukrainian territory Russia has occupied, including Crimea, as a means of keeping Russia intact and Putin in power. It’s a poor strategy. If we’ve learned anything from the recent Prigozhin Mutiny, it should be that neither the United States, NATO, nor even the war in Ukraine, can ultimately affect what may happen in Russia.
Russian Treatment of Ukrainians in Temporarily-Occupied Territories/AP
According to this report from the AP, Ukrainians in occupied territories are being press ganged into digging trenches in southern Ukraine. Following this report there is another report from the AP covering an appearance by a Ukrainian doctor before a recent meeting of the U.S. – Helsinki Commission. Watching these two videos can provide some context, if such context is necessary, to the remarks by Daria Kaleniuk to Jake Sullivan.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” covers a Ukrainian advance south of Orikhiv, in southern Ukraine. I sense the same thing that former NATO Ambassador Ivo Daalder described in his interview on yesterday’s PBS “Newshour,” that Ukraine is getting close to a breakthrough.
From Andrei
For those of you familiar with Kyiv, Andrei’s apartment is near the Radisson on Yarosliv Val, In Central Kyiv. Here is his description of last night’s drone attack on Kyiv –
“Tonight, the Iranian drones somehow broke through to the downtown Kyiv. They flew right over my building (I've heard two -- it is a very distinctive sound) and then were destroyed by AA guns. Explosions tripped the car alarms nearby which is normally the evidence that detonations were close.”
Even during peaceful times, car alarms going off in Kyiv happens quite often.
