Elina Svitolina
Yesterday, Ukraine’s Elena Svitolina defeated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the Wimbledon Round of 16, pointedly did not shake hands with Azarenka, and then she was eloquent and inspirational in her post-match interview. Tomorrow, Svitolina faces the No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland in the Quarterfinals. This time there will be a handshake. Swiatek wears a small Ukrainian flag on the side of her cap.
Ukraine Encyclopedia
I recently came across this very useful resource, a Ukraine encyclopedia produced by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies. Among other things, I learned about the Imperial Russian Army’s use Cossacks during France’s invasion of Russia in 1812.
The Bridges of Chonhar
Chonhar is a town situated at the point where the Crimean Peninsula joins the rest of the Ukraine. Chonhar contains 2 bridges, a railroad and a highway bridge, that were critical to the initial success that Russia had in its latest invasion of Ukraine. Had the bridges been blown, Russia’s invasion plans would’ve at least been delayed. Although there are other ways to enter the rest of Ukraine from Crimea, the bridges at Chonhar are directly connected to Dzankoi, the major Russian supply hub located in Northern Crimea.
Since the start of Russia’s latest invasion, there have been questions raised about why the bridges weren’t blown. There has already been several cases of treason against senior Ukrainian commanders responsible for the defense of Kherson Oblast, that contributed to Russia entering Kherson City and Nova Kakhovka on the 2nd day of the invasion. Therefore, the assumption was that Ukraine failing to blow the Chonhar bridges was also act of treason.
The Ukrainian soldier who was responsible for detonating the charges that had been placed on the bridges has recently been released from captivity in Russia. He sat for an interview with Ukrainska Pravda. Here is what he said, about why the bridges weren’t blown on the 1st day of Russia’s invasion – “Why didn't the bridges blow up? I know the answer: either it was the work of a Russian sabotage group, or the wires were damaged by a mortar. I have no other answer, and I'm not looking for it.”
News From the Battlefield
“The Latest Denys” reports that Ukraine has made significant gains on Bakhmut’s northern flank, making it more likely that Ukraine may soon control the heights above Bakhmut City. He also reports that Ukraine is getting closer to entering Klivshchivka, on Bakhmut’s southern flank. I suspect that Ukraine wasn’t planning a major offensive around Bakhmut, but this may end up what will happen if Ukraine’s gains continue. Denys also mentioned the transfer from Poland to Ukraine of several Soviet-made Mi-24 attack helicopters.
“Reporting From Ukraine” covers Ukrainian missile strikes against the Kerch Bridge, Rostov-on-Don and Briansk. Apparently, in all 3 strikes Ukraine used a modified S-200 missile, that flies in a ballistic trajectory and has a range of up to 400km.
“Reporting From Ukraine” also commented on the return to Ukraine of the leaders of the Azov Battalion from Turkey, where they had been held since being released from Russian captivity after the fall of Mariupol. Apparently, this was done, without any consultation with Russia. The Azov commanders announce their intention to return to the conflict. At about the same time Turkey has also voiced its support for NATO membership for Ukraine, and there are reports about Turkey’s willingness to support Ukrainian grain exports alone, without Russia’s involvement, and naval escorts for the grain carriers. If this news is true, there seems to be 2 cracks opening in the NATO Article 5 façade:
· Putting ships of the Turkish Navy in potential direct conflict with the Russian Black Sea Fleet;
· A U.S. Senate resolution supporting a NATO response, if Russia either uses a nuclear weapon in Ukraine, or creates an “accident” at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant that would result in nuclear material endangering NATO member states.
Ironically, at the same time the Biden Administration appears to be worrying that offering Ukraine a clear commitment to NATO membership would increase the likelihood of invoking Article 5.
