News From the Battlefield
Not much today. “Reporting From Ukraine” continues to focus on fighting around Volhudar, where Russia is trying to ease pressure on their supply lines running east and west in Zaporizhia Oblast. The Latest Denys shows damage to a railroad bridge on the main east-west rail line, likely caused by a HIMARS strike.
There has been increased discussion over the sending of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine. One issue would be training Ukrainian pilots to fly the F-16. A recent issue of “Politico” said the following, “Ukraine has identified a list of up to 50 pilots who are ready now to start training on the F-16, according to a Department of Defense official and a Ukrainian official, as well as three other people familiar with the discussions. These seasoned pilots speak English and have thousands of combat missions under their belts, and they could be trained in as little as three months, the people said.”
Fixed wing aircraft seem to be a necessary complement to the main battle tanks Ukraine is scheduled to receive. Without adequate air cover, the new tanks could be susceptible to the kind of attacks using anti-tank missiles that Ukrainians launched against Russian tanks during the Russian advance on Kyiv last March.
