An Apt Characterization of Imperial Russia and its Successors
In the latest issue of the “New Yorker” magazine, there is an article entitled "Letter From Tbilisi," about Russian novelists who have been incorporated by Putin as part of his effort to buttress his justification for invading Ukraine. The Russian novelists mentioned in the article included Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Gogol. The article contained a wonderful quote about Russia from Medina Tlostanova, who is described in the article as a "decolonial critic." According to her Wikipedia Page, she teaches at a university in Sweden. Ms. Tlostanova describes Imperial Russia along with the Ottoman Sultanate as "a special kind of 'secondary empire,' one that formed on the margins of Europe, and that compensated for its resulting inferiority complex by 'modernizing' its own subject peoples."
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Don’t Forget About the APCs
While the pending arrival of main battle tanks is wonderful news for Ukraine, it’s important to remember that Ukraine is getting many Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Strykers from the United States, and similar armored personnel carriers from other countries. Everyone now seems to be focusing exclusively on tanks, and grousing about how long it will take for delivery to Ukraine, especially the Abrams tanks from the US that are expected to arrive in several At the same time, no one is focusing on the armored personnel carriers (APCs). In my opinion this is wrong for several reasons, including:
· The APCs are very powerful weapons in and of themselves. Anyone who watched the account of the Battle of 73 Easting, that I posted 2 days ago, will see how Bradleys were able to knock out Iraqi T-72 tanks with TOW Missiles. The T-72 is the same tank that Russia is employing in Ukraine.
· Ukraine is very familiar with how to employ APCs in combat and they have already developed effective tactics using APCs. This is evidenced by their great success using APCs in the liberation of a large part of Kharkiv and Kherson Oblasts in a short amount of time, especially using the American M-113 a predecessor of the Bradley.
· The Bradleys, Strykers and the APCs coming from other countries in the “Ramstein Coalition,” are a significant upgrade from the M-113. If Ukraine achieved such success last Fall, in Kharkiv and Kherson Oblasts by using M-113s, they should be able to achieve even greater success from employing the Bradleys, Strykers, et al.
· The APCs are faster and more maneuverable that main battle tanks.
Tanks will need to be protected against the kind of attacks against Russian armor that Ukraine employed during the Battle for Kyiv, small units operating with anti-tank rockets. One reason that Ukraine was so successful in stopping the Russians around Kyiv was that Russia was never able to control the air, by using ground attack aircraft to protect its armor. If the United States and its partners are sending such a large number of tanks to Ukraine, fixed wing aircraft needed to protect the tanks against Russian ground attacks are almost certain to follow.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” describes Ukrainian successes in the south, around Pavlivka and Vulhedar, that has resulted in a large number of Russian casualties, and Ukrainian success in blocking a Russian attempt to encircle Bakhmut from the north, around Soledar.
Earlier today “Times Radio” interviewed Malcom Nance, a counter terrorism and intelligence expert who served for several months with the International Legion during Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine. He talks about Ukraine’s ability to incorporate the main battle tanks into its army, and what he learned from serving with the International Legion. Well worth the 6 minutes.
The Latest Denys has interesting information about the current Russian inventory of missiles (3:30) and interesting aerial photographs of attacks on Russian tanks around Pavlivka and Vulhedar (4:30). The reason the photographs are interesting is that they show no snow cover and lots of mud, and the difficulties that Russian tanks are having negotiating these conditions. It is likely that these conditions will continue over the next 2-3 months, with brief freezes, giving the APCs Ukraine is getting potentially an even bigger advantage.
