Pope Francis I
In his recent interview with the Associated Press, Pope Francis stated that homosexuality is not a crime and he “criticized laws that criminalize homosexuality as “unjust,” saying God loves all his children just as they are and called on Catholic bishops who support the laws to welcome LGBTQ people into the church.” This puts the Catholic Church in direct conflict with the Russian Orthodox Church, Moscow Patriarchate, where Patriarch Kirill has compared gay marriage to Nazism.
Reconciliation between the Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church has been a major goal of Pope Francis. It seems that his goal has now been put on hold.
Corruption Allegations
As he should, Pres. Zelenskyy appears to be moving quickly, to force members of his administration who have allegedly engaged in graft and corruption out of office. At the same time, there has no credible accusations of graft or mishandling of military deliveries to Ukraine from the West.
It is worth remembering that in February 2014 Ukraine sold 4 of Its MiG-29s to the Republic of Chad. This took place when Yanukovich was still President of Ukraine. I’ve often wondered what happened to the sale proceeds. In late February 2014, at the time of Russia’s invasion of Crimea, Ukraine’s armed forces hardly existed, largely because of Yanukovich selling all the equipment. At the same time, Yanukovich’s administration destroyed the draft records, making it very difficult for Ukraine to mobilize, during the period just after the invasion of Crimea and the occupation of approximately half of Donbas.
Another event worth remembering took place onn February 22nd, one day after Yanukovich fled Kyiv. A group of Ukrainian journalists went to Mezhihirya, Yanukovich’s estate, and recovered thousands of incriminating documents. I know a couple of them. Their work was documented in a short video entitled “Yanukovich Leaks.” They started the recovery process at Yanukovich’s boathouse, but they soon realized that they were vulnerable to attack from the “Kyiv Sea,” a large reservoir located behind the dam located just north of Kyiv. They moved everything up to a guesthouse, where they were still concerned about a police raid. “Yanukovich Leaks” is the story of how these journalists kept the record of Yanukovich’s corruption for all to see.
I have been to the boathouse and saw Yanukovich’s extensive “fleet.” I did not go into the main house, called the “Honka,” because I was too overcome by my experience of visiting the boathouse. I also didn’t go to the miniature zoo, the miniature Spanish galleon the site of many wild parties, or the garage with all the exotic cars. Mezhihirya is now owned by the State, and it’s open to the public.
I mention these examples to provide a context to where Ukraine was, to where it is now. This will accelerate once Ukrainian servicemen and women come back from the war. They aren’t fighting and dying to allow corruption and graft to continue.
Effect of the Pending Arrival of the Tanks
I think the pending arrival of the tanks is going to cause Russia to accelerate their plans for future offensive actions, possibly before they are ready. Recent Russian offensive actions in the South, as described by “Reporting From Ukraine,” and his most recent videos, may be an indication of this. According to Reporting From Ukraine, these actions have resulted in no territorial gains and large numbers of Russian casualties.
Another example is Putin’s order to take Bakhmut at all costs, to show to show the Russian people an example of Russian success. The latest from the Bakhmut Meatgrinder is covered in the Latest Denys.
