Two Articles and a Video
Scholz Will Bow to Pressure to Send Tanks to Ukraine, by John Lough/Chatham House – Seems as if this assessment is correct, given that the U.S. now seems to be on the verge of sending Abrams tanks to Ukraine. The article describes how Scholz might be trying to emphasize domestic political concerns, especially in the former East Germany where there is still residual support for Russia, over its international obligations as a leader of Europe.
“Boris Bondarev: Why More Russians Aren’t Defecting,” by Owen Matthews/The Spectator – Bondarev is a former Russian diplomat who quit his job at the Russian Embassy in Geneva. He is now in hiding in Switzerland. Bondarev talks about Russian attitudes toward the war in Ukraine, especially his former colleagues, his relationship with his father who is still in Russia, and how ordinary Russians are handling the changing conditions inside Russia.
Times Radio “Leopard tanks Would 'Make a Mess' of Putin's Army” by Benjamin Tallis/German Council on Foreign Relations – Tallis said of Scholz, “Scholz's Chancellery doesn't really want Ukraine to win. They don't want Ukraine to lose, but they don't want Russia to either win or lose either." He goes on to argue that this isn’t a view held by most Germans, or Scholz’s coalition partners; it’s a view held by Scholz and the Pacifist Wing of the SPD.
I understand Tallis’ assessment of Scholz’s political motives. Hwever, it seems to be quite possible that Scholz was an asset to the East German HvA and Soviet KGB, and later the Russian SVR, just as it’s quite possible that former UN Secretary General and Austrian President Kurt Waldheim was an asset to the Soviet KGB.
Taking away the fact that Kurt Waldheim was a member of the German Army Group E during WW-II, whose commander was executed in 1947 as a war criminal, something that was known to the Soviet KGB before it became common knowledge in the West. The early part of Olaf Scholz’s career exposed him to East German HvA, likely at the highest levels, knowledge likely shared with the Soviet KGB and the Russian SVR. Like Waldheim, who became both Secretary General of the United Nations and President of Austria before his service with the Wehrmacht became widely known, Scholz rose to the position of Chancellor of Germany even though his early career and his visits to East Germany were widely known at the time.
News From the Battlefield
According to “Reporting From Ukraine,” there was a Russian attack in the Zaporozhia Region, Southern Ukraine, but it went nowhere with reportedly large Russian casualties. This is the same area where it is widely expected that Ukraine will launch its own offensive, in the direction of Melitopol with the objective of cutting Russian temporarily occupied territory in half.
I would encourage recipients to look at what my collaborator writes about continuing Russian missile attacks in Eastern and Southern Ukraine, much of it directed at civilian targets. Even though Kyiv and other cities in Central and Western Ukraine haven’t been hit, doesn’t mean that Russian missile strikes aren’t continuing.
I would also emphasize the number of Russian casualties that are listed in the table at the end. They seem to be running consistently at around 700/day. This is more than twice as much as the daily totals last June, during the Russian attack against Sievierodonetsk, where it was “only” 300/day.

Rashist general Gerasimov, commander of the Ukrainian invasion, complained yesterday that the rashist command was having problems because they were fighting on too many fronts. It appears that the Rashists are only good at fighting civilians which explains their success in Syria, Ukraine 2014 and Georgia 2008. When facing an army, supported by its people, armed by its allies, which shoots back and counterattacks the rashists aren't sure of what to do. That has been the same situation since the start of the Rashist invasion of Ukraine.
