Democracy’s Weakness
Democratic countries have a weakness. They tend to procrastinate, especially in the face of threats to their national security. The response by Democratic countries to Russian aggression in Ukraine has been no different. Finally, the democracies seem to be shedding their feet of clay.
Over the past 2 weeks the West has begun supplying Ukraine with weapons systems designed to both defend Ukraine against attacks by ballistic missiles, including providing Ukraine with Patriot missiles, and providing Ukraine with weapons systems that will provide Ukraine with improved ability to go on the offensive, including main battle tanks self-propelled howitzers from Great Britain and advanced armored personnel carriers that include anti-tank munitions and large guns, from the United States, France, Germany and Great Britain.
We will know more after the next Ramstein Meeting this Friday. According to my colleague, there are discussions going on between the United States and Ukraine on how to improve Ukraine’s ability to strike military targets inside Russian territory, possibly including Grey Eagle drones, the ATACMS missile that can be fired from a HIMARS launcher, or both. The West may not have crossed the Rubicon as yet, in terms of providing Ukraine with the equipment it needs to drive Russia out of Ukraine, but they’re getting very close to its bank.
Whither Belarus
I am by no means an expert on Belarus, but there seems to be significance in the timing of the Show Trial of Svetlana Tsikhanovskaya, the duly elected President of Belarus and 4 others, that started today, and the start of joint Belarus and Russian military exercises and the potential of a new Russian invasion of Ukraine launched from Belarusian territory.
A few years ago, Nadia Savchenko the Ukrainian helicopter pilot and Member of the Ukrainian Parliament, was put on trial in Russia, after she was captured by collaborators in Luhansk Oblast and turned over to Russia. From viewing Savchenko’s trial, some observers said that Russia had forgotten how to conduct a proper Show Trial.
In the former Soviet Union, show trials were conducted in high-ceilinged grand halls lit with immense chandeliers of cut glass, and walls of inlaid wood, with judges sitting on elevated benches, in front of a packed house. The prosecutor reads out a long litany of offenses perpetrated by the defendant. The defendant, placed in a cage off to the side and having been duly interrogated and possibly tortured, admitted his or her quilt, after which the judges rendered their verdict and the sentence, most often execution. In Stalin’s time, most executions took place shortly after the sentence was handed down, often the next day and administered by a bullet to the back of the head.
In Savchenko’s case, the trial took place in a tawdry courtroom in an oblast city with several security people, all clad in fatigues and balaclavas. In the video coverage, one never saw the judge. Savchenko herself admitted nothing, and in fact used the trial to proclaim her innocence. But, unlike Tsikhanovskaya’s show trial, in Savchenko’s case at least they had a defendant to parade before the masses. According to reports, Tsikhanovskaya hasn’t even been able to communicate with her erstwhile defense attorney chosen by the Court. In a proper show trial this would be unheard of.
The timing of Tsikhanovskaya’s trial seems to be directed at Belarusian troops. As BGEN Peter Zwack (ret) said in a recent interview with Times Radio, the Belarus Army is likely made up mostly of conscripts, many of whom were likely protesting on the streets of Minsk during the Summer of 2020 after the election of Tsikhanovskaya was stolen. In his interview Gen. Zwack said that he predicts that if the Belarus Army were to participate alongside Russia in a future invasion of Ukraine that they would “melt away.” Perhaps the timing of Tsikhanovskaya’s trial was designed to put fear into the Belarusian Army.
Interview With BGEN Peter Zwack (Link is Above)
From 2012 until 2014 Gen. Zwack was the United States’ Defense Attache at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Gen. Zwack likely knows most of the currently serving members of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, including Gen. Gerasimov who was recently appointed Head of Russian operations in Ukraine. In a previous interview on CNN Gen. Zwack said that he has visited the Russian military installations in and around the city of Belgorod, not far from border of Ukraine and, as Defense Attache, he observed Russian Army maneuvers.
The interviewer seemed to be unaware of Gen. Zwack’s experience in Russia, as she never asked him about either his impressions of members of the Russian General Staff, most of whom he knew, or his impressions of the Russian Armed Forces from his 2 years of observations. It was only toward the end of the interview that Gen. Zwack himself mentioned his extensive experience in Russia.
In addition to his comments about Belarus, Gen. Zwack said that he believes that the decision of Great Britain to provide Ukraine with 14 Challenger tanks is extremely significant, not necessarily in the number of tanks but the fact that the delivery of the Challengers starts the process of further deliveries by Ukraine’s Western supporters. Main battle tanks require a substantial supply chain, of spare parts, fuel, other consumables like motor oil, and ammunition. A small number of Challenger tanks can only be justified if there is the certainty of the delivery of substantially more tanks in the near future.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” has diverted his attention from Soledar, and instead described recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian bases in Crimea. These, along with HIMARS strikes in temporarily occupied areas of Southern Ukraine, along the coasts of the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, are designed to both weaken Russian defenses and prevent Russia from building up an offensive capability to launch an attack to the north, toward Zaporizhia City.
The Latest Denys discusses the comparative virtues of the British Challenger II and German Leopard II tanks. His conclusion seems to be – slight advantage to the British.
