The Handwringers
Handwringers include all Western Government officials and media pundits who claimed the following:
· The common handwringer narrative prior to the start of Russia’s latest invasion - Ukraine wouldn’t last 5 days, and therefore:
o Better not provide Patriot missile batteries, because by the time they arrive in Ukraine the war will be over and, by the way, it would be difficult to train Ukrainians in their use.
o Limit arms transfers to N-Laws, Javelins and Stingers, arms that could be used by partisans, after Ukraine’s capitulation.
· After Ukraine confounded the handwringers and forced Russia to abandon their offensive against Kyiv, the handwringer narrative changed – We cannot provoke Russia by providing Ukraine with any kind of weapons system used against Russian occupiers that can be considered “offensive”
o In April Ukraine requested M-777 howitzers but delivered 2-3 months later.
o The original M-777s were delivered without the satellite-based guidance systems, ostensibly not to “provoke“ Russia.
o At roughly the same time, Ukraine requested deliveries of HIMARS long-range rocket systems, but they were not delivered until last July
· At roughly the same time, the handwringers added an additional narrative – It will take Ukrainians several months to become familiar with the use of sophisticated weapons systems like HIMARS, therefore it doesn’t make sense to provide them.
o At around the same time, CBS “Sunday Morning” showed a segment on HIMARS, including an interview with a HIMARS operator, an 18-year-old U.S. Army enlisted person. She said how easy it was to operate a HIMARS and the operator training only took a couple of weeks (Ooops!)
· An additional handwringer narrative appeared – We cannot allow the Ukrainians to use Western delivered weapons to launch attacks inside Russian territory:
o The HIMARS missiles that were delivered to Ukraine had a range limited to 80km.
o Despite numerous requests by Ukraine, the longer-range version, called “ATACMS” with a range up to 180km have not been delivered.
· Throughout much of the war, but until just recently, the overarching handwringer narrative went something like – We can only provide Ukraine with weapons to defend themselves but, God forbid, that we give Ukraine weapons that would help them to actually drive Russia out of Ukraine.
o The delivery of armored fighting vehicles, including Bradleys, heavy tanks starting with the British Challenger-II, and Patriot batteries, suggests that perhaps the handwringers are now being asked to go sit in a corner, and/or handwringers are changing their stripes.
The blame for yesterday’s attack that destroyed a residential apartment block in the City of Dnipro using an X-22 “Carrier Buster” missile with a 1,000lb (400kg) warhead, identical to the missile that last June destroyed a shopping center in Kremenchuk, at a time when it was full of patrons, is primarily on Russia. But the blame also falls on the “Handwringers.” If Ukraine had received all the weapons it asked for, a time they asked for it, perhaps Kremenchuk, Dnipro, and other attacks by ballistic missiles would never have happened. Ukraine has no defense, for either the X-22 or the S-300 launched in a ground-to-ground mode, with both fired in a ballistic missile trajectory.
As an American, in my household made up exclusively of Ukrainians except for me, I am a “handwringer,” guilty as charged. I am an American, therefore I am an accessory to the handwringers and just as guilty as they are. To them, it doesn’t matter how many of these reports I write. I empathize with them, but It’s still getting annoying.
News From the Battlefield
Both “Reporting From Ukraine,” and “The Latest Denys” cover the situation in Soledar. They agree on the overall situation, except it seems for the definition of Soledar. They agree that the center of the City is now under Russian control, and they agree that there is still intense fighting in the suburbs, a part of Soledar that Denys doesn’t seem to believe is part of the City.
Denys also covers the situation in Bakhmut, and he briefly says that Ukraine is still advancing toward Kremina. Both the Latest Denys and Ukrainska Pravda, have maps showing the current situation in Kremina. Denys’ map is more detailed. As I have said before, Kremina/Svatove is more important than Soledar/Bakhmut, because by controlling Kremina Ukraine can cut off supplies to Soledar/Bakhmut.
Denys also says that his friend who is stationed in Kherson tells him that it’s unusually quiet there. I would not take this report as an indication that nothing is going on, at least from the Ukrainian side.

Russian Invasion of Ukraine 12:00 noon January 14 to 12:00 noon January 15, 2022
Abbreviations:
RMA = Regional Military Administration SBU = Security Service of Ukraine
RASHISTS = russian Facists/all russian invaders
“After two quiet weeks the russians organized another rocket barrage against Ukraine. This time there were 33 missiles of which 21 were shot down. Ukraine's air force admitted today it hasn't the tools to shoot down the X-22 Carrier buster. Five of them were fired yesterday from long range tactical bombers of which one hit a residential high rise apartment building.”
“The carrier buster, designed to sink US aircraft carriers, is theoretically a precision missile. Either the rashists can't aim, or they deliberately targeted the apartment building. Over 30 dead and 70 injured.”
“The other four x-22 also hit civilian homes and administrative buildings. So, five less reasons for concern if US carriers move to support Taiwan.”
“The interval between barrages is growing.”
