Patriotic Beavers
In the memes so enjoyed by Ukrainians, raccoons will need to make room for the beavers. In the Latest Denys, at about 10:15 into his video, he reports that beavers have built dams along many of the rivers in Northern Ukraine, near the border with Belarus, increasing the difficulties facing the Russians if they decide to attack Ukraine a 2nd time from the direction of Belarus. According to Denys, it’s the absence of tourists and hunters that explain the increased activity of the patriotic beavers.
The entire border between Ukraine and Belarus is almost one big swamp or, if not, forests with thick underbrush. The result is that possible invasion routes from the territory of Belarus are extremely limited, and Ukraine knows where they are.
The forests and the underbrush near the border with Belarus are prime locations for 2 favorite activities of Ukrainians, especially men, mushrooming and gathering blueberries. During the summer, trains running from towns close to the border with Belarus and Kyiv are full of people with large quantities of blueberries, that they plan to sell in local markets in Kyiv or in favorite locations along the sidewalks of major streets. I am sure that many of these same people are now providing useful intelligence to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
More on Rep. Spartz
After she was first elected to Congress, I happened to see an interview Rep. Spartz gave to Fox News. During the interview she talked about taking her children to Omaha Beach, in Normandy, to show her children the high price of freedom that was paid by American servicemen on D-Day, June 6th, 1944.
In March 1962 my parents took my sister and me to Omaha Beach for the same reason. Even at the age of 15, standing at the edge of the cemetery and looking down on the beach, I understood the price that was paid by our troops for successfully scaling the cliffs in the face of German fire directed down at them, and why naval gunfire support, especially from destroyers going dangerously close to the beach in the face of strong tides and underwater barriers, to provide more rapid and accurate fire against German positions than was possible from battleships and cruisers far offshore. This was complemented by tactical airstrikes against German positions, and strategic bombing of German logistics, going all the way from Normandy back into Germany.
If Rep. Spartz recognized the importance of taking her children to Omaha Beach, perhaps she can draw the following lessons from Omaha Beach, that apply equally to the War in Ukraine today, the country of Spartz’s birth:
· Ukrainian ground forces need improved ability to conduct tactical airstrikes from fixed wing aircraft, along with improved gunfire support.
· Ukrainian ground forces need improved ability to hit Russian bases inside Russia, using longer range ACACMS missiles and drones.
Spartz has established her credibility with her Trump Republican colleagues in the House. Perhaps she is now in the position to educate her Trump Republican colleagues, about what Ukraine is fighting for today, in the same way that she said she educated her children when she took them to Omaha Beach.
Referring back to the analogy I made with Senator Vandenberg and President Nixon in yesterday’s email, it is worth mentioning that, like Spartz, both Sen. Vandenberg and Pres. Nixon were Republicans.
News From the Battlefield
The situation in and around Soledar remains confusing. Both Denys and “Reporting From Ukraine” suggest that fighting in Soledar continues. Reporting from Ukraine covers Ukraine’s establishing of a new defense line along a rail embankment just outside Soledar, and he adds that rail embankments have proven to be a significant barrier in the conduct of the war.
At around 12:20 into his video Denys includes aerial footage of the area around Soledar that I find particularly useful. It appears to show that Ukraine still holds significant territory inside Soledar, but he admits that the only means of exit for these Ukrainians is across fields because the roads are now controlled by Russia. However, he adds that after Prigozhin reported that Russia has taken all of Soledar, contradicted by the Russian Defense Ministry, it will be embarrassing for Prigozhin if this doesn’t turn out to be the case.
Also included are 3 articles from today’s newsletter from Meduza IO. The first is entitled “Bafflement After Battle,” and is about Soledar. The next is entitled “The True War of Attrition Begins,” and is a summary of the fighting in 2022 and what 2023 might bring. The third alleges that seriously wounded Russian soldiers are being sent back to the Front, before receiving physician’s clearance. Taken together, it’s possible to draw the following observations/conclusions:
· Soledar and Bakhmut seem to be accidental battles. Originally, Russia appeared to be using Bakhmut as the southern anchor to a campaign to trap Ukrainians in a pocket around Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, with Izyum and Lyman as the northern anchor. The northern anchor melted away last September & October when Ukraine liberated Lyman in Izyum. Russia kept trying to capture Bakhmut, and Ukraine responded.
· Both sides are running low on ammunition. Elsewhere, there have been reports of Ukraine resuming the manufacture of 120 and 152mm ammunition needed for Soviet-era artillery, in several undisclosed locations.
· Advantage in training new troops, those that are effective, appears to go to Ukraine. Russia has not established their ability to train and equip the thousands of new conscripts upon which they are relying to compensate for dwindling stores of ammunition, what Meduza descirbes as the “people for ammunition” strategy that appears to be the Russian strategy in front of Soledar and Bakhmut.
· If Ukraine is to fight in the same manner as the U.S., a war of maneuver with relatively low reliance on artillery, they need fixed wing aircraft currently not on offer by the West. The U.S. is trying to compensate by providing Ukraine with smart bomb attachments, making their airstrikes more effective, but the fact remains that relies almost completely on Soviet era aircraft, the extraordinary ability of their pilots, and vastly improved Ukrainian antiaircraft capabilities.
· If Russia has such a manpower advantage from the recent conscription, why are they forcing seriously wounded soldiers back to the Front?
Overall, Meduza’s prediction for 2023 gives the advantage to Ukraine.
There is still very sketchy news coming out of Ukraine about the situation around Kremina and a possible Ukrainian counterattack in the South, toward Melitopol. In the past, lack of news means Ukraine is up to something.
