We’re back. Day jobs are a pesky thing.
“An Unorthodox Russian Version of Heaven & Hell”/Olga Lautman Courtesy of the Center of European Policy Analysis (CEPA)
Well worth reading. The Moscow Patriarchate appears to be an organ of the Russian State. Until 2019 the Moscow Patriarchate has been allowed to operate in Ukraine without any restrictions, that included distributing Russian propaganda and giving shelter to Russian servicemen. Tucker Carlson, and other fellow travelers, try to argue that the recent restrictions that have been placed on the Moscow Patriarchate amounts to suppression of religion by Pres. Zelenskyy’s Government. Ukrainians are free to attend any church they like, including the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Moscow Patriarchate.
Lautman’s article also references the indictment in the United States of former Fox News producer Jack Hanick, for doing business with Konstantin Malofeev, sanctioned by the United States. Hanick allegedly helped Malofeev establish TsargradTV. The article has a link to a Bloomberg article about Hanick, much of which is blocked by a paywall. This is an article about Hanick’s indictment from “Rolling Stone,” without a paywall.
While Metropolitan of the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, Kirill allegedly controlled cigarette smuggling operations there. Kirill may have made over $1 billion from his activities, and he became known as the “Tobacco Metropolitan.” In 2011 Kirill appeared to support the opposition to the Russian parliamentary elections. Apparently, as a result Kirill was threatened with the loss of his apartment in the Kremlin and public airing of his activities in Kaliningrad.
News From the Battlefield
Both “Reporting From Ukraine,” and the Latest Denys believe that Ukraine will be forced to withdraw from Soledar. The Ukrainian Government reports that Ukrainian troops are still fighting in Soledar. Reporting From Ukraine faults the Ukrainian High Command for not sending reinforcements to Soledar earlier, to help control their flanks. He also described how the Wagner Group is working. They have approximately 50,000 troops in front of Soledar, of which 40,000 are prisoners. Wagner uses prisoners to probe Ukrainian defenses and, by doing so, incur huge casualties. When the prisoners find a Ukrainian weak spot, the remaining 10,000 Wagners, highly trained professional soldiers, are brought in to exploit the weakness. Reporting From Ukraine stated that Ukraine still holds strong defense lines in the city, but their ability to stay in Soledar depends on the success of Ukrainian counterattacks against the flanks that are now held by the Russians. The Latest Denys reports that Ukraine has already left Soledar, except for around 500 soldiers remaining inside the town.
What is interesting is that there is virtually no news about the fighting in and around Kremina, to the north of Soledar. Apparently, Ukraine is very close to taking Kremina. If they do so, Ukraine will cut a major Russian supply route serving both Soledar and Bakhmut. It seems that in terms of significance, Kremina trumps Soledar.
Another interesting development is the appointment of Russian General Lapin to head Russian ground forces in Ukraine. Both Prigozhin, Head of the Wagner Group and Kadyrov, who controls the Chechens fighting in Ukraine, blamed Lapin for losing the cities of Lyman and Izyum to the Ukrainians. Expect possible internal conflicts between the 3 separate segments of Russian forces operating in Ukraine, the regular Russian Army, the Wagners, and the Chechens. If the Wagners, especially the 10,000 regular troops, continue to sustain losses in and around Bakhmut and Soledar, will the Russian Army be willing to re-supply the Wagners?
The modus operandi of Wagner and Prigozhin seems to be attacking and occupying locations which contain resources that Prigozhin can then control and derive profits, irrespective of their military value. Soledar has large salt and gypsum mines. This approach is the same as what Wagner does in several African countries. They come in and protect the rulers, and in return get valuable mining concessions.
