The A-10
If there was ever a weapon that effectively addresses the conditions Ukrainian troops now face in Eastern Ukraine, where the Russians are using human assets as their primary weapon, it is the A-10 “Warthog.” The A-10, primarily through the pilot’s use of the Gatling gun mounted in its nose, can kill large numbers of enemy soldiers in a very short time. What better weapon to employ against Russian troops?
Why the A-10 seems to be off the list of potential fixed wing aircraft to be provided to Ukraine is beyond me. It was mentioned early in the war, but now all the attention is being paid to the F-16. Ukraine should also get the F-16, or equivalents from other NATO countries, but the A-10 is a better solution for Ukraine’s immediate needs in Donbas.
As described in the book “Boyd – the Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War,” for the U.S. Air Force, the A-10 has always been kind of an orphan. According to the book, in the early 1970s the A-10 was developed by the U.S. Air Force to keep money from being spent by the Army on the more expensive Cheyenne Helicopter. Most Air Force pilots prefer flying in fancy jets at higher altitudes, including the F-16. There is nothing fancy about the A-10. As the book points out A-10 pilots like to say, “There is no intelligent life living above 1,000 feet.” It took 20 years, until the 1st Persian Gulf War, for the A-10 to prove its worth.
The book states:
· Many people in the Air Force did want to send the A-10s to Iraq but, “the A-10 had a bigger effect on the campaign (the 1st Gulf War) than any other aircraft.”
· Iraqi POWs said that they called the A-10 the “Black Death.”
· “The POWs said that other aircraft came in, made a quick strike and were gone. But the A-10 lingered over the battlefield, and when the pilot sighted a target, the deadly 30-millimeter cannon released destruction such as the ground troops had never seen.”
As one general said, quoted in the book, “I take back all the bad things I have ever said about the A-10. I love them; they’re saving our asses.” No doubt, Ukrainian soldiers fighting off waves of Russian conscripts around Bakhmut would say the same thing. Let’s hope Ukrainian soldiers get the chance.
The Latest Lawrence Freedman, entitled “The Storm Before the Calm:
Parallels to the 1st World War –
· “There was, of course, also an Eastern Front. Moscow does not talk much about the great defeats in the First World War, preferring to celebrate the great victories of the Second, but we can recall that the Eastern Front from 1914-17 saw a massive Russian army full of ill-equipped conscripts let down by chaotic command structures and inadequate logistics.”
· “On the Western Front the trench warfare for which it is now remembered (and the comparisons that the pundits like to make with the war in Ukraine) eventually gave way to large-scale offensives.”
“Ukraine needs to wait”
· “Although main battle tanks attracted the most attention in the deliberations before and after the donors meeting at Ramstein air base in Germany on 21 January, the other elements in the package are as, if not more, important – more infantry fighting vehicles, improved air defences, including Patriots, and more artillery.”
· “The systems being delivered are among the best available, making it possible for Ukraine to put together three Ukraine Corps (or three NATO divisions equivalent in total), and potentially at least a division suitable for serious offensive operations.”
· “In current battles they (Ukrainians) are usually outgunned, coping with old and often worn-out equipment, and taking casualties even if they inflict far more on the Russians. The need to make the most of their new capabilities argues for postponing action until their offensive units are fully kitted out and ready to go. That means, however, leaving the initiative to the enemy, and Russian forces are currently massing for fresh attacks.”
“Russia in a Hurry”
· “Moreover, after coping well with the first year of western sanctions and the revenue demands of the war, Russia is starting to take an economic hit. Last month saw revenue from oil and gas almost halved from a year earlier, with its oil now trading at $49.48 per barrel. Other revenue is down by some 28 percent, while expenditure has gone up by almost 60 percent. Putin may still feel he can win a test of endurance but he can no longer be so sure.”
· Most of all they (Russia) have developed tactics to use their soldiers as a cheap resource. These are more sophisticated than pure ‘human waves.’ Instead, they involve using the expendable troops to move against Ukrainian lines, drugged on some accounts or with a gun at their back on others, with scant chance of survival. Their sacrifice helps reveals the location of Ukrainian lines so that they can be better targeted by artillery, as well as exhausting the defenders so that they are less able to cope when the expendables are replaced by more professional and better equipped units.” (ergo, the A-10).
Freedman concludes, “Yet the sheer numbers being deployed and Russia’s readiness to take heavy losses, even if this does reflect wishful thinking on Moscow’s part, means that Ukrainians cannot but face this prospective onslaught with some trepidation, wondering if this will be their ‘backs to the wall’ moment. The aim may be to engage in a series of time- and soldier -consuming attacks to show that Putin that they still have the initiative, or to keep Ukrainian forces busy fending off a series of limited attacks to deny them the space to prepare their own offensives. The challenge now will be for Ukraine to absorb these attacks, without conceding too much ground. They still need to avoid getting rushed into action before their new offensive formations are ready. Eventually it will be their turn.”
As two analysts from the Institute of the Study of War (ISW) said in a webinar this morning, hosted by US-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC), “the length of time the war goes on will be dictated by the timing of the supply of western weapons.” USUBC has YouTube channel. If they post the webinar there, I’ll send it out. Either way, slow-walking weapons deliveries or taking ISW’s advice, Ukraine won’t stop fighting. Ukraine has no other choice.
News From the Battlefield
The latest “Reporting From Ukraine,” seems to support the recent British intelligence assessment, that Russia’s offensive has already begun, along with the assessments of Lawrence Freedman and ISW. According to “Reporting From Ukraine,” in recent days Russia has launched attacks along most of the contact line in Eastern Ukraine, in the hope that they can achieve a breakthrough with which to launch a major attack. Apparently, Russians were blunted everywhere.
The Latest Denys has a segment on the virtues, or lack thereof, of the German Leopard I tank. In contrast to the Leopard II, Denys says that the Leopard I has very limited usefulness (4:30 into the video).
