President Zelenskyy in London
President Zelenskyy’s visit to London today, and his just completed speech at Westminster Hall, reminds me of one of my favorite quotes –
“Dear Coleridge—Did you seize the opportunity of seeing Kosciusko while he was at Bristol? I never saw a hero; I wonder how they look.”
—Charles Lamb, in a letter to Samuel Taylor Coleridge June 24, 1797
Charles Lamb was a late 18th and early 19th Century essayist and author of children’s books. Samuel Taylor Coleridge is one of Great Britain’s most famous poets, including “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” and “Kubla Khan.” Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kosciusko was a Polish patriot, who was a colonel in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and, later, he returned to his native Poland and he became a general in the Army of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 1794 he commanded an uprising against the Russian Empire that led to the 3rd, and final, Partition of Poland. Losciusko’s visit to Great Britain in 1797, referred to in Lamb’s letter, took place not long after Poland ceased to exist.
Ukraine has become a nation of heroes. During his speech, Pres. Zelenskyy gave a helmet belonging to one of Ukraine’s fighter pilots, whom he referred to as “one of our kings.” Among other things, Great Britain announced that they will be providing long-range missiles to Ukraine.
I expect an announcement about fixed-wing aircraft will soon follow.
“Putin’s Annexation Miscalcultion” by William Pomeranz
Pomeranz is the Head of the Kennan Institute at the Wilson Center. Pomeranz suggests that by annexing the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, plus the oblasts of Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhia, Putin backs himself into a corner because, under Russian constitutional law, he cannot return Russian territory. Pomeranz writes –
“In retrospect, however, Putin’s 2020 Russian constitutional amendments also foreshadowed his intentions in Ukraine. The changes included an obscure provision that forbids the Russian Federation from giving back any territory that is declared to be a part of the country. The article was initially thought to deal with Crimea (and the Kurile Islands). The decision to annex several Ukrainian provinces (Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia) in 2022, however, now puts this provision in a new light.”
“Essentially, Putin cannot withdraw from – or even negotiate about – these provinces without undermining one of his new core principles. Therefore, Putin cannot simply declare victory and go home, since such a declaration would now lead to the alienation of “Russian” land.”
“Thus, observers contemplating any possible end-game scenario to this tragic war must consider that from Putin’s standpoint, all of Russia’s territorial integrity – including the newly annexed provinces – is on the line.”
Pomeranz closes his piece by stating –
“Ironically, Putin seems destined to a similar fate as Gorbachev with the loss of the annexed territories, with one major exception. He will not share the universal praise that Gorbachev received upon his death as a leader who tried to expand the freedoms of the Russian and Soviet people. In contrast, Putin’s legacy now includes decreased civil rights, a ruthless crackdown on domestic dissent (real or imagined), military defeat, and the loss of newly-claimed Russian territory.”
“In the final analysis despite the Kremlin’s furious attempts to whitewash Russian atrocities and military setbacks, the basic facts surrounding Russia’s war of aggression are not in doubt, and Putin’s attempt to hide behind a Potemkin Village built on lies and disinformation has not fooled anyone. Instead, a physical, environmental, cultural and humanitarian wasteland has been inflicted on the Ukrainian people that will forever bear Putin’s name.”
News From the Battlefield
Today, my colleague wrote the following – “The number of war related headlines from the regions has been falling for over a month. For me this more than anything else signals that Russia's invasion is running out of steam.”
Add to my colleague’s observation are the statements by the British Defense Ministry over the past couple of days, that Russia is running out of combat power. Pres. Zelenskyy’s decision to leave Kyiv for 2 days, amid a Russian “offensive,” also speaks volumes.
“Reporting From Ukraine” focuses on Russian efforts to take Siversk, north of Soledar and a Ukrainian logistics hub for the Luhansk Region. He doesn’t believe that the Russian attack on Siversk will succeed.
