Ukraine – 2/7 & 2/6 Sitreps
Compiled by: Robert Homans
February 7, 2023
NOTE: In addition to this sitrep, February 7th, I will be including both today’s Sitrep and my colleague’s update of February 6th. Yesterday, I was sidetracked by my “day job.”
2024 Olympics
In response to the announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that they will allow athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus to compete under their respective national flags, both countries have released their version of the Olympic flag, consisting of 5 bloodstained interlocking rings, with the words “rape,” “torture,” “terrorism,” “kidnapping,” “murder” inside of each ring along with the names of Ukrainian cities, Bucha, Kharkiv, Borodyanka, Kherson and Mariupol. I found the image of the flag on LinkedIn.
The Head of the IOC, Thomas Boch, is a worthy successor to Avery Brundage who, as Head of the United States Olympic Committee and later the IOC, prevented Marty Glickman, who was Jewish, from running in the 4x100 meter relay anchored by Jesse Owens, to appease Hitler and obtain construction concessions in Nazi Germany that were conditioned on his barring Glickman from competing alongside Jesse Owens. An interview with Marty Glickman is here.
In November 1956, at the Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, just after the Soviet invasion of Hungary, there was the famous water polo match between Hungary and the Soviet Union. Ervin Zador, one of the members of the Hungarian team and who, during the match, was punched in the face by a Soviet player, later emigrated to the United States where he became a swimming coach. One of his pupils was Mark Spitz.
If Russian and Belarusian athletes are allowed to compete in the 2024 Olympics under their respective national flags, I hope Ukraine decides to boycott. Let Thomas Boch be the worthy successor to Avery Brundage.
Anne Applebaum – Seymour Martin Lipset Lecture
Her lecture, entitled “Autocracy Inc: How the World’s Authoritarians Work Together,” can be found here. In her lecture she talks about how Western professional services firms often aid and abet the authoritarians, a subject I have visited and revisited in my emails, going back to the beginning in 2013, when I began sending these emails, at a time when Paul Manafort was weaponizing U.S. law firms in the service of his client, former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” and the “Latest Denys” seem to have complementary views about the progress of the fighting around Bakhmut. Reporting From Ukraine describes Ukraine’s strategy as an effort to frustrate Russia’s effort to take the city and, without taking Bakhmut, he believes that Russia cannot launch their planned offensive. The Latest Denys has a broader view of Russian deployments along the Donbas contact line, whereas Reporting From Ukraine focused on Bakhmut.
The latest update from the British Defense Ministry states that Russia may have already started their offensive in Donbas, but they stated that “Russia now lacks the munitions and maneuver units required for successful offensives. Senior commanders likely make plans requiring undermanned, inexperienced units to achieve unrealistic objectives due to political and professional pressure.”
The primary “weapon” Russia is relying on to undertake their offensive is lots of people, in the form of recent conscripts and prisoners, leavened by regular Army troops, regular troops from the Wagner Group, and other groups including the Chechens. Therefore, the immediate need for Ukraine should be weapons designed to kill lots of people in the shortest possible time. Perhaps this will be subject of discussion at the upcoming Munich Security Conference.
