Webinar Reminder
Celebration of the 1-Year Anniversary of Ukraine’s Predicted Demise
February 28, 2023 (1PM EST, 8PM in Kyiv, and 10AM PST)
Zoom Link is Below
Russian President Putin and many Western pundits predicted with certainty that Ukraine would capitulate after no more 5 days of Russia’s most recent invasion of Ukraine. Instead of marking the 1 year anniversary of the start of Russia’s latest invasion, as many others are doing, we decided to mark the 1-year anniversary of the day of Ukraine’s expected capitulation.
We want to do what we can to honor the brave heroes of Ukraine, consisting not just of soldiers of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, but all Ukrainians, and all Ukraine’s partners, including countries supplying weapons, private groups and individuals who provide humanitarian assistance, who togther proved President Putin and all the pundits wrong. Last but not least, all of you, our loyal readers.
Panelists will be the 2 authors of the emails that you’ve been getting almost daily since February 24, 2022. The Moderator will be Larysa Homans, executive coach, mentor, former member of the Faculty of Kyiv Mohilya Business School, experienced moderator and, in the interest of full disclosure, the wife of one of the authors. We will both make short introductory statements, the Moderator will then ask both of us questions, and then we will open the floor to questions.
The webinar will be conducted on Zoom. The Zoom link is here. The Zoom meeting ID is - 830 1184 0497, and the Zoom passcode: 449343. If you’re dialing in you may need these to join the meeting.
We greatly appreciate your loyalty and support. We look forward to your participation.
Slava Ukrainii!!!
“One Year Later: How Russia Came to Fail in Ukraine, Battle after Battle” by Illia Ponomarenko, Kyiv Independent
Ponomarenko is one of the best, if not the best, military journalists covering the war.
To add to Ponomarenko’s analysis, based on conversations I have had with individuals involved in the fighting around Kyiv, early in the war, it was the initiatives of small groups of Ukrainians, regular army, territorial defense, and volunteers, often acting on their own initiative who stopped the Russian advance on Kyiv. Examples include re-taking of Hostomel Airport, and blowing dams north of Kyiv, turning land into lakes or bogs that stopped the Russians.
These actions by Ukrainians are very similar to the actions of American soldiers and seamen acting on their own initiative, who turned the tide at Omaha Beach in June 1944, when the Allied Command nearly made the decision to withdraw. Small groups of American soldiers, often led by sergeants and below, blasted their way through German obstacles, allowing the troops to get off the beach. They were complemented by U.S. Navy destroyers, that ignored treacherous tides and underwater obstacles, to get in close enough to the beach to provide accurate Naval gunfire support, knocking out German artillery located on the bluffs above the beach.
This leads me to wonder, especially given the 8 years of training of Ukrainian Army troops by U.S. Army instructors at the Yavoriv Training Center near Lv’iv why the West, especially the U.S., U.K. and Canada that were providing the training, was so surprised by the success of Ukrainian defenders around Kyiv during the 1st month of the war? The West’s inability to recognize Ukraine’s capabilities, even though the West had 8 years of experience training Ukrainian soldiers, led directly to the delays in deliveries of heavier weapons that Ukraine is coping with today. Instead of planning for future delivery of heavy weapons at the beginning of the war, the West evidently focused on providing Ukraine weapons, such as Javelins, NLAWS and Stingerss, that Ukraine could use in a guerilla war, after Ukraine was defeated.
The narrative, repeated by almost everyone in government and the media, was that Ukraine would surrender in 5 days. In other words, why even think about providing Ukraine with heavier weapons with longer delivery times, when Ukraine won’t last long enough to use them?
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” focuses on Bakhmut. It looks less and less likely that Russia will take Bakhmut by this Friday, the 1-year anniversary of the start of Russia’s lates invasion. According to “Reporting From Ukraine,” one of the problems Ukraine had in defending Soledar, which fell to the Wagner soldiers last month, was the lack of mortar ammunition. Apparently, this has now been rectified. Also, by this Saturday the weather will warm to above freezing, turning the fields that Russian troops must cross into a sea of mud. This is one of the many problems that Russia faced last year, in its attempt to capture Kyiv.
5 minutes into the Latest Denys, you can find the list of weapons and supplies that are part of the latest tranche of U.S. military support to Ukraine. At 6:50 into the Latest Denys he has excerpts from Yvgeniy Prigozhin’s latest rant, about Wagner being cut off from supplies of additional weapons.
Covers yesterday’s visit to Ukraine by Pres. Biden, with previous visits by U.S. Presidents or, as the case may be, no visits. I understand that in addition to YouTube, these “shorts” are also posted on TikTok. President Biden’s visit yesterday, was the first visit to Kyiv by a U.S. President in nearly 15 years.
