Ukrainians at the Sundance Film Festival – Kyiv Independent
Ukrainian producers are screening 3 films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. This article includes synopses of all 3 films.
Artistic creativity often increases during wartime. Several years ago, I went to the military museum in Vienna. From the exhibits, Austria was almost continuously at war for nearly 115 years, from the start of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1701, until the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. This period coincided with a prolific period of creativity in Vienna, especially but not exclusively music.
“It's High Time to De-Colonize Western Russia Studies” – Foreign Policy Magazine (FP)
This article and others, including previous emails of mine, are beginning to shed light on the fact that for too long Russia, and its direct predecessor the former Soviet Union, has been given a “pass,” for being one of the great European colonizers of the 18th and 19th centuries, along with Great Britain, France, Spain and Portugal. Unlike these countries, Russia not only maintains its status as a colonizer, but their goal is to increase their population of subjected peoples. As the article points out, Russia’s war in Ukraine is only the latest example.
Prime Minister Lavrov seems to never tire of visiting the African Continent, carrying the message that Russia is trying to “de-Nazify” nearby peoples, like Ukrainians, and/or free them from Western influence. Perhaps it is time for countries in Africa to recognize Russia for what it is, a colonizer “without limits.”
Kenya is one African country that has seemed to recognize Russia for what it is. Martin Kumani, he Kenyan Ambassador to the UN, gave an extraordinary and moving speech in support of Ukraine, at a UN Security Council meeting on the eve of Russia’s latest invasion.
Part of the reason why African countries give Russia and, previously, the former Soviet Union, is because, as the FP article points out, educational institutions in the West do not bother to include this history in their curriculum. I often wonder that if he bothered to learn more of the Soviet Union’s history of oppression of ethnic minorities in its territory, whether the Socialist U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (S-Vermont) would’ve chosen to spend his honeymoon in the former Soviet Union. It is possible that the reason that he was unaware of the dark history of the Soviet Union, that it largely wasn’t taught in our educational institutions.
News From the Battlefield
Last Friday’s missile attack by Russia seems have resulted in minimal lasting damage to Ukraine’s power grid. Today, my colleague reported that there were no missile strikes in Kyiv, and today there were no blackouts there. He also believes that DTEK and other major electrical energy suppliers in Ukraine have built up larger stocks of replacement equipment, while at the same time improve their ability to jury rig distribution system.
Vulhedar - The last two reports from “Reporting From Ukraine,” February 11th and 12th, should be viewed consecutively. February 11th focuses on substantial Russian losses in Vulhudar; February 12th on substantial losses around Avdiivka near Donetsk.
“Reporting From Ukraine” states that the tactics used by the Russians in these two areas are the same as they successfully used in Soledar – human wave attacks. The Latest Denys points out Russian tank movements have been very similar to how they employed tanks last March, during the assault against Kyiv, single file columns allowing Ukraine to pick off the lead and trailing tank of BMP, and then easily destroy the others.
Ukraine is claiming that Russia has already begun their well-publicized offensive. “Reporting From Ukraine” states that Russia has been moving troops from Belarus down to the south. Once again, I’m reminded of the famous scene from the movie, “Animal House,” showing an earlier offensive by the Faber College Marching Band. When the Russians stop using the same tactics time and again, I’ll stop using the same illustration of those tactics.
