News From the Battlefield
Both “Reporting From Ukraine” and the Latest Denys focus on the Bakhmut meat grinder. The former seems a bit more optimistic than the latter, and the most granular.
Timothy Snyder’s Last Lecture
Prof. Snyder’s last lecture for his course at Yale on Ukraine is a “keeper,” unless you’re a German (or an American holding certain perceptions of Ukraine). Some highlights (starting at 15 minutes into the video (I have added some of my own thoughts in perentheses):
· Snyder says that German responsibility for the War begins with the discussion of the Holocaust but, according to Snyder, this discussion misses German expansion into the East, without which there would’ve been no Holocaust (he points out that only 3% of the victims of the Holocaust were German Jews).
· According to Snyder, in the 1970s German Social Democrats began a process of reconciliation with the Soviet Union (likely started under former Chancellor Willy Brandt in 1969, with “Ostpolitik” becoming a cornerstone of German foreign policy).
· (Prominent Germans have argued that Nordstream I was merely consistent with “Ostpolitik”)
· The Soviet version of the “cult of the war” in the 1970s, that “we were both the victims and the victors,” focuses exclusively on Russia, leaving both Belarus and Ukraine, where most of WW-II in the East was fought, out of the discussion.
· At same time, as part of Germany taking responsibility for the war, they echo the Russian narrative of “10s of millions of dead Russians,” and leave out millions of dead Belarusians and Ukrainians.
· In this narrative, there is no reason to talk about Ukraine at all.
· In 1989 Germany begins re-unification.
· In 1990 Poland recognizes its border with Ukraine, and Germany finally recognizes its border with Poland. In August 1991 Ukraine declares its independence. (The implication is that German narrative about the war, where Ukraine is hardly mentioned, begins to unravel).
· The recognition of borders leads to EU expansion starting in 2004 (and, almost certainly, NATO expansion).
· By the beginning of the 21st Century Germany, according to Snyder, has developed a reputation of having dealt with the past but, he suggests, “this is only partly justified.”
· “You won’t find arguments in Germany that it is necessary to be defeated, but that peace is a good thing.” According to Snyder there is no discussion in Germany of German imperialism.
· Snyder says that the rise of Putin in 1999 – 2000 is hugely important, because it is here that Russia fails to hold a competitive election with an uncertain succession, whereas at the same time Ukraine held 2 competitive elections and there was a peaceful transfer of power.
· In Germany there was little recognition of “the reverse happening in Ukraine in 2004 & 2005” than was the case in Russia, namely a competitive election.
· Instead, in November 2004, at the same time as the Orange Revolution in Ukraine Gerhard Schroeder, then the Social Democrat Chancellor of Germany, calls Putin a “flawless Democrat.”
· Under Schroeder and later Angela Merkel, a Christian Democrat, economics became the cornerstone of German foreign policy toward Russia. In early 2005 Schroeder negotiates the establishment of Nordstream I.
· At the same time, Fascist rhetoric among the Russian elite increases, but there is no notice of this in Germany.
· (Euromaidan changes everything, in that Ukraine wants to join the EU whereas Russia sees Ukraine’s joining the EU as a threat. It puts Ukraine in the middle, between German and Russian reconciliation).
· Russian invading Ukraine in 2014 is then seen by some in Germany as Russia resolving Germany’s problem vis-à-vis Ukraine. Nordstream II is established as a kind of reward to Russia, for its invasion of Ukraine. According to Snyder, “a great success for Russian foreign policy.”
· The “Imperial Rhetoric,” that “Ukraine isn’t a real state, its corrupt it’s full of Nazis as evidenced by the Right Sector, etc.” is generally accepted in the German media.
· (Minsk II and the “Steinmeier Plan” appear to be an extension of the German perception of Ukraine that has been partly planted in Germany by Russian narrative).
· The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine is an imperial war.
The events after February 24, 2022 seem to have broken Russia’s hold on the German view of Ukraine, of which the idea that Ukraine will only last 5 days is one aspect. To be fair to Germany some of this same rhetoric existed in the United States (or still exists if one believes Tucker Carlson and other commentators, along with certain Members of the U.S. Congress from both ends of the political spectrum).
