Latest Russian Missile Attack
According to Ukrainstka Pravda, 70 missiles were fired at Ukraine today (Dec. 5th), and 60 were shot down. Other developments:
· According to the Moscow Times several Russian strategic bombers were damaged or destroyed at a base deep inside Russia. A Ukrainian drone is suspected.
· Ukrboronprom, Ukraine’s national defense producer, is beginning testing of a new attack drone of Ukrainian design.
· Last Saturday night 2 electrical substations belonging to Duke Energy located in a town in North Carolina were sabotaged by gun fire, leaving approximately 30,000 people without power for up to 4 days.
It seems that despite anything the U.S. might do to try to deter Ukraine from attacking Russian assets inside Russia, like programming HIMARS launchers from targeting inside Russia, Ukraine will do it anyway, as they should.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” covers continued Ukrainian successes along the Svatove-Kremina Road, including breaching Russia’s defense line.
The most interesting part of the Latest Denys takes place at 10:20 into his video, where he shows the Russian ammunition depots in Kherson and southern Zaporizhia that have been targeted by Ukrainian missiles.
Ukrinform reports that Ukraine has raised its flag on the Left Bank of the Dnieper River.
There seems to be many scenarios for the Russians to think about.
Prof. Timothy Snyder’s Latest Lecture
Snyder’s last lecture is a good one. It is worth watching the last half of his lecture. It sheds light on at least one of the Pundits’ latest narratives, eastern Ukraine has part of Russian culture, as well other questions I have been wondering about, but I didn’t have the answer:
· Post WW-II Ukraine becoming, numerically speaking, one of the World’s most important Jewish countries, starting with Jewish in-migration from other parts of the Soviet Union to today where, as Snyder said, “the greatest warlord in Ukrainian history is a Jew.” Of course, he’s referring the Pres. Zelenskyy.
· “The Soviet Union needs Ukraine to be a nation, but not to be a nation.” An example he gives is that economically, the Soviet Union needs Ukrainian grain as a source of hard currency earnings to support industrialization, but it must be seen as what Snyder describes as part of a “larger project” within the Soviet System. “We need them but we don’t need them” is, according to Snyder, a reflection of the history of the Soviet Union and Soviet industrialization, the latter having mostly taken place in Ukraine.
· Until Yeltsin and Putin there are very few, if any, Russian leaders of Russia. Catherine the Great was a German, Lenin has 1 Russian grandparent, Stalin was a Georgian, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Gorbachev were all of Ukrainian origin.
· Ukrainian cultural re-awakening starting in 1965 with the movie, “Shadow of the Forgotten Ancestors” (trailer). Partly because of the movie several Ukrainian artists, including the poet Vasyl Stus, and others, became active in Ukrainian dissident activities. Stus was sent to the Gulag twice. When he got out the first time, in the mid 1970s, he became part of the Ukraine Helsinki Group. He was sent back to the Gulag, and he died there in 1984.
· Not Mentioned by Snyder – In the late 1960s, at the same time as the anti-Vietnam War Movement was taking hold at Harvard, several Harvard students of Ukrainian descent got together, raised money, and they started the Harvard-Ukraine Research Institute.
· Why “Ukrainianization” didn’t happen in the 1990s. I have wondered about this. The major wave of Ukrainianization, at least in terms of changing place names, tearing down statues of Lenin, etc., didn’t really happen until after the Revolution of Dignity. Snyder believes this was the result of a succession of Ukrainian cultural suppressions, starting with the Valuev Decrees in 1866, the Famine in 1932 & 1933, and the suppressions that took place in the 1970s, all of which made Ukrainians wary of taking such a major step.
· “Oligarchial Pluralism” – Snyder describes this being the case in the 1990s, where there were different oligarchs who has their own TV stations, their own foundations, etc., as opposed to just one. According to Snyder this condition existed up until recently. As Snyder says it caused different views about art and history from different patrons.
· “Europe starts to become more practical.” When I first went to Ukraine in January 2005, I think it’s fair to say that Europe was distant. Euromaidan changed everything.
· “The Eastern Anchoring of Ukrainian Culture” – Prior to Euromaidan, few people would argue that Eastern Ukraine as an anchor of Ukrainian Culture. According to Snyder Euromaidan served to change this perception. Snyder uses as an example Serhiy Zhadan, a writer and a poet from Kharkiv, in Eastern Ukraine who, during Euromaidan, had skull cracked open by a Russian who was part of a plot to take over Kharkiv, for which Zhadan was resisting. This incident, along with one in Odesa in May 2014 when 47 Russian 5th Columnists were killed in a burning building to which they fled, after they attacked a procession of soccer fans. These events, and others, destroyed the myth of Russian Eastern Ukraine, except of course for the Russian leadership in the Kremlin who kept believing in the myth, which is a major reason why Russia launched their most recent invasion of Ukraine last February, after Eastern Ukraine failed to drop into their lap, as expected, in 2014.
· Kyiv’s return as a European capital – Which it really hasn’t been since the Mongol sacking of Kyiv in 1240.
I have been critical of commentators looking at the war through a Russian lens. This is because they don’t really grasp what Snyder was is talking about in his course, and particularly in this lecture.

Russian Invasion of Ukraine 12:00 noon December 4 to 12:00 noon December 5, 2022
“There are some differences between the Ukrainian and russian army.
The most obvious is that the Ukrainians aim before shooting. The Russians just shoot forward without aiming.
Maybe equally obvious the Ukrainians are fighting the russian army. The russians are fighting Ukraine.
Finally, there are 50,000 Ukrainian women in the Armed forces and a good 20% are serving at the front. Have yet to hear or see or read of russian women in the russian military, at the front, but they’re in the mess kitchens and medical hospitals.
