The Yale Russian Chorus
The time has long-since passed for the Yale Russian Chorus, a musical group at Yale with a long history at Yale, to drop the reference to Russia or Russian in its name. How long? Almost 60 years. In the early 1960s, I attended a performance of the Yale Russian Chorus performed at the secondary school where I was a student.
Back in 2014, soon after Russia’s invasion and occupation of Crimea and its invasion of Donbas, I brought this matter to the attention of a friend of mine, a Yale graduate, who founded and owns an advertising/public relations firm in Kyiv. I suggested that we try to get the Yale Russian Chorus to change its name and drop all references to Russia. The fact that I’m a graduate of Harvard College made our effort somewhat ecumenical.
My friend contacted the Director, and he offered the services of his Ukrainian advertising/public relations firm to produce a new logo for the Yale Russian Chorus free of charge. He accepted the offer. They dropped the Tsarist double eagle from their logo, and they added a Ukrainian motif that can now be seen on their website, but without any reference to Ukraine. However, dropping “Russian” from their name seemed to be a bridge too far.
It is now 2022, Ukraine now has its own independent Orthodox church, and it’s under a brutal invasion by Russia. It is also worth mentioning that the Yale Russian Chorus specializes in liturgical music sung in Slavonic, the common church language of the Eastern Orthodox Church, including Ukraine, Greece, Serbia, and many other countries as well as Russia. In other words, there is nothing in the repertoire of the Yale Russian Chorus that is exclusive to Russia.
Prof. Timothy Snyder has just completed his undergraduate course at Yale, entitled “the Making of Modern Ukraine.” The major theme of his course are the significant cultural distinctions between Russia and Ukraine, including the impact on Ukraine of the Reformation. I wonder how many members of the Yale Russian Chorus who are taking Prof. Snyder’s course and, in the process of taking his course, are wondering why their organization is named as it is?
Russia is now a pariah country. How long will it be for members of the Yale Russian Chorus to continue to accept that they are performing under the name of a country that is conducting torture, rape and genocide in a neighboring country that also follows the Eastern Orthodox religion? Yale, rightly or wrongly, is seen as an institution that is intent of providing “safe spaces” for its students. Can singing under the name of an organization that carries the name of a pariah state that is murdering and raping citizens of a neighboring Orthodox State be considered as a “safe space?”
Yes, it is now past time – drop the references to Russia from the Yale Russian Chorus.
Goose-Stepping in bad Lobenstein
This article in the New York Times is about Prince Heinrich XIII of Reus, the scion of a 700 year-old royal House in Germany, and the ringleader of a recent conspiracy to overthrow the German Government, execute the current Chancellor, and replace it with a government similar to the structure of the pre-1918 German Empire. Those of us who regularly comment on Ukraine often get questions about the influence of extreme Right-wing groups in Ukraine. Publications in the West, including those in Germany, often include articles about the extreme Right in Ukraine. Russia never tires of giving, as its excuse for its invasion of Ukraine, the need to “de-Nazify” Ukraine.
Speaking personally. I don’t want to get any more of these questions concerning the influence of the extreme Right in Ukraine. Those who ask them would be better placed in visiting bad Lobenstein. For the record, I gave a response to questions I got concerning the extreme Right in Ukraine, in an interview with the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative. You can read what I said here (about half-way down).
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting from Ukraine” describes the continuing Bakhmut Meatgrinder, where he reports that Russia established a position inside of a garbage dump. I think that at some point Russia is going to play itself out, bumping itself up against Ukrainian defenses in Bakhmut and in front of Donetssk City while losing large numbers of soldiers, many of them new conscripts and prisoners.
The Latest Denys describes a Ukrainian strike on a hotel near the City of Melitopol where Russian troops were being quartered. According to the exiled Mayor of Melitopol, as many as 200 Russian soldiers were killed and, since they were quartered in a hotel, it could be reasonably assumed that most of the dead were officers or senior enlisted men.
Denys also describes strikes against Russian military installations throughout eastern Kherson and southern Zaporizhzhia oblasts, and northern and central Crimea. At this point it looks likely that, this Winter, there will be a Ukrainian counteroffensive south toward Melitopol.
The weather has warmed in the last few days. This has more effect on operations in northern Ukraine, in the Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk regions, than it does in southern Ukraine, because in the north the ground will freeze improving conditions for heavy armor, or at least that is the general assumption made by the pundits. In southern Ukraine, relatively close to the temperate influence of the Black Sea where Ukraine’s latest counteroffensive might well be fought, it is less likely that the ground will freeze.
