“Person of the Year”
Many publications, including “Time” Magazine and the “Financial Times,” have proclaimed Pres. Volodomyr Zelenskyy as their “Person of the Year.” I agree with Myroslava Gongadze, Head of the Ukraine Service of Voice of America that the Person of the Year should be the Ukrainian People. It is true that Pres. Zelenskyy made the seminal remark, when he said, “I need ammunition, not a ride,” that served to galvanize opposition to the Russian invasion and stiffen the spines of Western governments, but:
· It was the Ukrainian people who, acting singly and in groups, stopped the Russians in front of Kyiv.
· It was Ukrainian farmers who got into their tractors and began Fall planting, not more than a week after Ukraine liberated large parts of Kharkiv Oblast, despite fields that were mined and other dangers.
· It was the courage of individual Ukrainians who faced down Russian forces in cities like Irpin, Bucha and many other towns and cities.
· It has been individual Ukrainians who have learned to keep up their normal lives (as much as possible), during missile attacks and power outages.
· Much has been written about Ukrainians fleeing Ukraine, but not much has been written about individual Ukrainians who have taken in thousands of internally-displaced people who have decided to stay in Ukraine.
This has been a war where national decisions have been reduced or transferred to individual leaders, and in the process de-legitimizing decisions of individuals on both sides. For Russia, it has become “Putin’s War,” “Putin’s bombing,” etc., and in the process ignoring the fact that looting, rapes and murders in cities like Bucha, Irpin and Kherson were undertaken by individual Russians. For Ukraine, as effective Zelenskyy has been as a wartime leader, his penumbra obscures the heroism and decisions of individual Ukrainians.
Timothy Snyder’s Course at Yale – “The Making of Modern Ukraine”
Last night I was having a conversation with someone who has forgotten more about Ukrainian History than I have ever learned. From my watching every one of Prof. Snyder’s lectures, and from the discussion last night, I have concluded that “The Making of Modern Ukraine” was an excellent effort on Snyder’s part, the course could’ve done a better job in presenting to students how “Modern Ukraine” became what it is today.
I have already mentioned the lecture about Euromaidan that, more than anything else, was a missed opportunity to explain the seminal event in the shaping of “Modern Ukraine,” but there are other oversights:
· Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s Poet Laurate - I don’t recall Taras Shevchenko ever being mentioned anywhere in the course. Prof. Snyder mentions the Valuev Circulars of 1863 that suppressed the use of Ukrainian Language and Literature but Taras Shevchenko, who died at around the same time as the Circulars, was a major “victim” of the suppression of the Ukrainian Language. He was sent off to internal exile in Kazakhstan for publishing poems in the “Little Russian” Language (e.g. Ukrainian).
· The Pale of Settlement – Including much of what is now modern Ukraine, the Pale of Settlement was the area in the Russian Empire where Jews were forced to settle, but not in urban areas. It lasted from 1791 until 1917. I don’t recall the Pale of Settlement mentioned in any of Prof. Snyder’s lectures, even though he did say that Ukraine has become “an important Jewish Country.”
· Immigration into what is now Ukraine – Various groups who were encouraged to settle in Ukraine have had a major influence on Ukraine’s culture and economy. Catherine the Great encouraged German Mennonites to settle in what is now Ukraine, especially around Melitopol. They were jailed or exiled by Stalin; many fled to the West, especially Canada where, today, many descendants provide substantial private support to Ukraine.
Another example was Polish, German and Austrian aristocracy who established estates in what is now Western Ukraine. An excellent book on this subject is “Last Train to Vienna,” that I have discussed in an email early last year. The owners of these estates were granted monopolies to conduct various businesses, such as brewing beer. Many estate owners knew nothing about the subject, so they turned the management over to Jewish managers who, in turn, took advantage of the peasants. This likely contributed to the anti-Jewish “pograms,” common in this area in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.
Immigration is common all over Ukraine, making its historical experience somewhat similar to that experienced in the United States. This was never really addressed by Prof. Snyder.
· Odesa – Back in 2004, the “Economist” did an excellent article on Odesa, called “City of Faded Charms.” I first read this article when it first came out, just before going to Ukraine for the first time, in January 2005. The article ends with this paragraph, “If Ukraine thrives, it will do so at least partly because something of Odessa lives on within it. As a liberal city open to the world, Odessa was an aberration by the 19th-century standards of the Russian empire. It was as close in spirit to Paris as to St Petersburg, and it made itself useful to both. This is exactly the balancing act that Ukraine, still poised between east and west, has to master two centuries later. Perhaps the memory of Odessa can help.” Snyder makes little mention of Odesa, and its role in the shaping of Modern Ukraine.
These are just a few examples. With all due respect to Prof. Snyder, Ukraine has an extremely complex history, perhaps too complex to fit into one course.
