From My Friend Kateryna, Former Sniper and Now Drone Operator
I have received the following report from my friend Kateryna sent last August 2nd but read this morning. She used a messaging app. –
“I am well, in the North of Ukraine. I am upgraded to the plane type drones going 20-30 km to Belgorod and Briansk, both in Russian territory. In case you know someone who will be interested to help, I started to collect money for the “Sirko” drone, a small budget Ukrainian produced plane that will give us the possibility to fly even when clouds are below 800 meters, and we can be very mobile in terms of starting & finishing the flight (they’re designed to return to their handler). The price for 2 birds with antenna is $6,500.00, which is equal to 2 Movic drones, but the Movics have a shorter range.
If you would like to contribute to buying the Sirko drones, please go to Paypal and search for katerynamaksym69@gmail.com. If you are not a Paypal user, you can use my account on “Stripe,” and I will send it on to Kateryna via Paypal.
If Kateryna is in the North of Ukraine and near Briansk and Belgorod, she’s probably in southern Sumy or northwestern Kharkiv Oblasts.
Thank you and, as always, Slava Ukrainii!
“Putin’s Age of Chaos”/Foreign Affairs
In these emails I don’t normally pay much attention to Putin. He’s getting enough attention as it is, and it is easy to get completely wrapped up in the subject of Putin, like witches poring over the entrails of some animal as a basis for making profound predictions. Im making an exception for this article.
From my reading the article, Russia is made up of at least 4 power centers, each becoming more independent of the others, and no one, least of all Russia, can say what direction each may take. These are:
· Putin himself
· Members of Putin’s inner circle, called the “Siloviki”
· The armed forces, security services and mercenary groups, including the FSB, the Rosgvardia a large internal security force reporting directly to Putin, and current & future mercenary groups, including Wagner, the Chechens, and others
· The Russian people
I may have missed a few, and I’m sure others will disagree with the list, but you get the idea.
The Biden Administration seems to think that they can orchestrate some kind of national security “soft landing,” where Ukraine is seen to prevail in the war, but with Putin staying in power. In my uneducated view, this is impossible, because it’s impossible to predict events inside Russia. For example, no one in the West predicted the Prigozhin Mutiny.
For me the article also indirectly illustrates the danger of a ceasefire or worse, namely an armistice that includes loss of Ukrainian territory to Russia. This outcome would likely include the removal of Pres. Zelenskyy, likely through a 3rd of 4th Maidan (depending on whether one includes the 2000 “Ukraine Without Kuchma” movement), a protracted partisan war in Ukraine, both overlaid by the instability inside Russia as described in this article.
The undisputed immediate objective must be Ukraine’s victory, supported as it is, and will be, by the West. What may happen in Russia because of Ukraine’s victory is beyond the West’s control, much as the West may think it can influence future events inside Russia. They cannot. What seems to be indisputable is that the alternative, consisting of a ceasefire with an armistice, the likely removal of Zelenskyy by angry Ukrainians who would feel betrayed, and a nasty partisan war, is far worse.
“Understanding Russia's breaking point, how Putin's regime could fail in Ukraine”/Times Radio
This is an interview with BGEN (Ret) Peter Zwack. From 2012 until 2014 Gen. Zwack was U.S. Military Attache at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. As Military Attache, Peter traveled to cities like Belgorod and Rostov-on-Don, garrison cities that are playing prominent roles in the war, and he attended Russian military exercises. In the interests of full disclosure, Peter is a friend of mine, and he has been getting my, and now our, Ukraine emails almost from the beginning, circa 2014.
The interview is 40 minutes long and is well-worth watching. Like most of the commentators and analysts covering the war who have a Russian slant, Peter has a long history in Russia. He recently wrote a book about his time in Russia, called “Swimming the Volga: a U.S. Army Officer’s Experience in Pre-Putin’s Russia.”
However, unlike most of the commentators and analysts covering the war, Peter has developed a respect for Ukraine’s military capabilities and, more importantly, the role that Ukrainian society plays in Ukraine’s prosecution of the war. This interview then, gives one a unique perspective about Ukraine, from a person with extensive experience in Russia.
News From the Battlefield
The “Latest Denys” reports on a 2nd crossing of the Dnipro River by Ukrainian forces, upstream from the initial crossing, opposite Kherson. The latest crossing puts Ukrainian troops on the mainland, as opposed to one of the islands in the Dnipro Delta as is the case with the initial crossing.
According to Denys, Russians opposing the crossing are largely conscripts, not the paratroopers that were previously there, but who have been moved to oppose Ukrainian incursions further east. Three things to watch:
· Can the Ukrainians build pontoon bridges across the Dnipro, allowing them to move heavy equipment across the river?
· If the answer is “yes,” Ukrainians can potentially sever a road connection that the Russians are currently relying on to supply Russians in southern Ukraine and, in addition further isolate Crimea. Russia’s normal resupply route is now unavailable, because of Ukraine destroying the Chongar bridge and the companion railroad bridge. At the same time Russian prepared defense lines in this are far less than what Ukrainian troops are currently dealing with further east.
· There could potentially be a 3rd crossing near Nikopol, going across the drained reservoir. This would put Ukrainians very close to the nuclear power plant on the other side.
The presence of Ukrainians may well force Russia to relocate troops back toward the Dnipro, and away from Ukraine current counterattack vectors.
