The Big Drone Attack on Russia
Last night, Ukraine launched its largest and most sophisticated drone strike on Russia since the start of the war. “Reporting From Ukraine” from yesterday does an excellent job in covering the damage and the strategy behind the strike. Today’s “Reporting From Ukraine” provides further updates on the Pskov drone attack, plus news of a Ukrainian breakthrough of the 2nd Russian defense line near Verbove, east of Robotyne.
The airbase near Pskov is located not far from the border with Estonia, where as many as 6 Il-76 transports were destroyed, along with fuel storage tanks and, judging from the secondary explosions, ammunition.
There is some poetic justice here. On the first day of the war, the Russians used this airbase as the jumping off point for the attempt to land Russian paratroopers at Hostomel, just outside Kyiv. They were stopped by a few enterprising Ukrainians who destroyed the Hostomel runway, preventing the transports based in Pskov from landing. Later, one of the transports was shot down by Ukrainian defenders. Last September, Russia used IL-76s from Pskov to ferry soldiers and equipment to the Kharkiv Region, to stop the Ukrainian attack that had, by that time, liberated most of Kharkiv Oblast.
Currently, Russia appears to be using paratroop units based in Pskov to augment their efforts to try to hold back Ukraine in the South. The loss of at least 6 transport planes, plus moving others to bases away from Pskov and the loss of fuel supplies, will make transporting Russian airborne groups more difficult and time-consuming.
“Reporting From Ukraine” did an excellent job in describing the level of sophistication displayed by Ukrainian drone operators, largely by coordinating a series of attacks, with the first attack likely revealing the location of Russian defenses.
The “Latest Denys” dated yesterday, reported that a separate drone attack took place in Bryansk, not far from the border with Ukraine. Russia’s largest manufacturer of micro-electronics was the target.
The “Latest Latest Denys,” dated today at 0:30 into the video, apparently confirmed a suspicion that we discussed in earlier emails, that Russian defense lines are either unmanned or sparsely manned.
At 9:30 into this video, Denys reports on the modification of the Ukrainian Neptune missile, the same missile that sank “Moskva,” the Flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Denys states that the new version of the Neptune is now a ground-to-ground missile with a range of up to 800 km., a range that Denys believes is unrealistic. Regardless, the modified Neptune gives Ukraine a land-based weapon, a substitute for the ATACMS missile, without the restrictions on using the Neptune on targets inside Russian territory. As a land-based missile, it also eliminates the need for putting Ukrainian fixed wing aircraft at risk, as they are when launching the Storm Shadow.
Kateryna - My friend Kateryna, a drone operator in NE Ukraine likely where last Tuesday’s drone attack was launched. She said that last Tuesday night was “very busy.” However, she didn’t divulge if her unit was responsible for launching the attack, but I’m sure that many of her former students were involved.
Gen. Mick Ryan – Gen. Ryan pulls everything together, including Ukraine’s use of drones, HIMARS and naval drones into his latest article on Substack, entitled “A Strategic Strike Campaign.” The use of naval drones reminds of a story I once heard.
A Story Involving Remote Controlled-Boats – I’m reminded of this story, having watched the movie “Oppenheimer” and marveling at Ukraine’s use of remote-controlled boats to re-take effective control over the Black Sea, without having a navy of its own.
During WW-II the United States considered the use of unmanned remote-controlled boats, with powerful engines, to deliver the Atomic Bomb to Japan. There was concern that dropping the bomb from a B-29 would destroy the plane, making it a suicide mission for the crew. They later developed evasive maneuvers that would protect the plane and its crew, allowing for an air burst that that caused such terrible damage on the ground. There was also concern that the Japanese could either sink the boat or, worse, capture the boat intact.
At the end of the war, the boats were sold as surplus. According to a late friend of mine, who told me this story, his grandfather purchased one of the boats. His grandfather owned a “dacha” at the entrance to the Columbia River Gorge, east of Portland, Oregon.
One summer day, my friend’s grandfather decided he wanted to go to a dinner party on Orcas Island, part of the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound, west of Seattle. According to my late friend’s account, his grandfather got into his boat, left his dacha at around Noon, went down the Columbia River, into the Pacific Ocean and up the coast of Washington State, down the Straits of Juan de Fuca and, after one re-fueling stop, arrived at the party on Orcas Island at around 9PM, just as the sun was going down.
After Ukraine’s victory, perhaps at least one Ukrainian will derive similar enjoyment out of a modified drone boat, as my late friend’s grandfather got out of his boat.
News From the Battlefield
In the “Latest Denys” (August 30th), he uses a tactical map from the Inst. for the Study or War (ISW) that shows the position of Ukrainian forces south of Robotyne relative to the 2nd Russian defense line (since been broken through by Ukraine). The distance from Novoprokopivka, the next town to the south of Robotyne, to Tokmak is just over 25km. Beyond the 2nd Russian defense line, there may be fewer mines, fewer obstacles, and perhaps fewer Russian soldiers.
Today’s “Reporting From Ukraine,” at 3:25 into his video, he reports on a special operation initiated by Ukraine’s security service, the SBU, where they whacked several traitors and Chechen soldiers, who were planning to hold a local election in the Zaporizhzhia Region. At 4:00 into his video, he also covered the breaching of Russian defenses around Robotyne. Bohdan discusses further below (I added bold face).
2 Wall Street Journal articles (for those who aren’t WSJ subscribers and cannot get around the paywall, I’ll provide excerpts) –
“Ukraine Needs More Weapons, Not U.S. Kibitzing” Op-Ed by Seth Cropsey of the Yorktown Institute –
· “Ukraine’s offensive has reached a tipping point. Russia’s military lines will snap, if given enough time. But this requires more military support from the U.S. If Kyiv is to succeed, Washington needs to supply it with critical weapons and supplies, not gratuitous military assessments.” Amen.
· “The current view among American military leaders that the Ukrainians should concentrate on a single decisive city in the Zaporizhia oblast, similarly, is nonsense considering the enemy has thick defensive lines and mobile reserves and neither side can gain air control.”
· “Faced with these conditions (Ukraine cannot achieve operational surprise), Ukraine must manipulate Russian logistics and reserves while applying pressure on the front line to develop an opportunity for a breakthrough. This has led to a campaign that imposes a lateral stretch on Russian lines from the front line to the Russian deep rear through long-range strikes, supply hubs and road-and-rail links. These strikes alone won’t collapse Russian defenses, but they will weaken its front-line forces, allowing Ukraine to make progress at a steady rate and push into Russian trench systems.”
· “Russia has based its entire defensive strategy on preventing a Ukrainian breakthrough and any subsequent Russian withdrawal to a new defensive line to consolidate and respond to an enemy breakthrough. Retreating under fire is difficult, particularly with disorganized, exhausted and demoralized forces. Russia’s sector commander in the south, the Ukrainian-born Alexander Romanchuk, is well aware of his adversary’s objectives. Yet he knows his force’s limitations. He has prevented a Ukrainian breakthrough by feeding in reserve units, despite heavy casualties from Ukraine’s now-abundant supply of cluster munitions and drone-enabled system of directed artillery fire.”
· “Had Ukraine heeded the advice Americans conveyed through the Washington Post and the New York Times, it would have impaled a half-dozen brigades on thick Russian defenses, allowed Russia to concentrate its own reserves, and seen its combat power erased in a few days.”
· “Ukraine’s greatest weakness is its insufficient quantity of deep-strike implements, artillery pieces and drones. Depending on expenditure rates, Kyiv could run out of Storm Shadow and SCALP-EG cruise missiles by October. It needs additional long-range weapons—such as the Army Tactical Missile Systems and the German Taurus cruise missile—to extend its bombardment for the next six weeks.”
· “A Ukrainian victory isn’t a question of long-term support but short-term transfers. Ukraine must be sustained for the next six weeks to be given a real shot at a breakthrough that will change the trajectory of the war.”
“Ukraine’s Elite Snipers Fight Russians, Bullet by Bullet”
The target of a Ukrainian sniper is often Russian officers, “Russia’s army is dependent on officers for leadership because it doesn’t have a corps of noncommissioned officers, or soldiers who rose through the ranks to leadership positions, as in Western militaries and, increasingly, in Ukraine. Russian officers can often be identified from afar by their uniforms and even their boots.”
· “ “If you’re assembling to attack and your lieutenant is picked off, the unit goes into disarray,” said retired Army Major General Robert Scales, a military historian who served as commandant of the U.S. Army War College. “When you kill a Russian small-unit leader, you completely discombobulate the unit,” said Scales. “
· Snipers, in contrast, always head out seeking to kill enemy soldiers whom they can clearly see, and generally have little doubt if they have taken a life.”
The three snipers in training said they have killed before, though declined to say how many times. Cuckoo also declined to say how many she had killed but said she wants to kill more. (“Cuckoo” is in her early 30s, and she was a reporter in civilian life)
None of the snipers feel much empathy for their targets after pulling the trigger. Many have lost close comrades. Of the original 26-member Devils and Angels team, only 14 are left. One sniper and one infantry support member were killed, and the rest were injured.
“I don’t see their faces, the emotions on them, the photos of their wives, or anything else about their lives,” said Cuckoo.
“I just see figures that move, and I shoot,” she said.
Meduza IO was originally a Russian news site, but they had to move to Latvia to avoid being shut down by the Russian authorities. They still retain many contacts inside Russia; thus their reporting is very useful.
This article goes into great detail about the Ukrainian breakthrough east of Robotyne, describing the risks and opportunities on both sides. Meduza believes that Ukraine’s success in the south is forcing Russia to move troops from around Bakhmut as well as further north, from Kreminna, where Russia has been putting pressure on Ukrainian defenders. If true, this development gives Ukraine 2 potential advantages:
· Eases pressure in the north, where Russia had gathered as many as 100,000 troops for a possible offensive to retake territory in Kharkiv Oblast.
· Troop movements create opportunities for Ukrainian artillery to take out Russian units and supplies that are in transit.
