Kherson Offensive – Two Separate Videos

Ukraine reported that the long-awaited Kherson Offensive started late yesterday morning, Ukraine time.   Here are two separate videos that may offer a good description of the offensive.  I say “may,” because the government has enacted a news blackout.

The first video is the Latest Denys.   The next is an individual who appears to be reporting from Mykolaiv, a city located between Kherson and Odesa.    Both videos contain excellent tactical maps, showing 3 Ukrainian attacks, with Denys saying that he thinks the initial objective is to split the approximately 25,000 Russian troops largely trapped on the Right Bank of Dnieper into 2 pockets, one around Kherson, and the other further east, in the direction of Zaporizhzhia.   Both are well-worth watching.

Another Ukrainian objective is to regain control of the Nova Kahovka Dam.  One reason is that the Dam serves as the water source for the North Crimea Canal, that provides Crimea with most of its surface water.   Controlling the Dam would allow Ukraine to close the canal, leaving Crimea without its major water source.

Representative Victoria Spartz (R-Indiana)

I was wrong about Rep. Spartz.   She appears to be a Trump Republican who is trying to play both sides, stating that she strongly supports Ukraine while at the same time stating that she’s skeptical about weapons deliveries, alleging that weapons have been diverted.   There is no evidence that weapons deliveries from the West have been diverted, but diversion is one of the narratives being put forward by the Trump Wing of the Republican Party that could undermine Congressional support for Ukraine.

Spartz has also alleged corrupt and possibly treasonous behavior by some of the top members of Pres. Zelenskyy’s presidential administration.   What Spartz is alleging had been previously reported by Ukraine’s media.  While these allegations need to be investigated, it is up to Ukrainians to do so.   Spartz is reporting nothing new, and she appears to be suggesting that the U.S. needs to conduct its own investigation.   If Ukraine wants U.S. assistance in pursuing these allegations, Ukraine is fully capable of asking for it.

I am following Rep. Spartz’s Twitter posts, as well as press releases from her Congressional Office.  Prior to the war, Rep. Spartz seemed to have shown little interest in Ukraine, instead focusing on the needs of the 5th District of Indiana, which is entirely appropriate.  Since the war started, she has made at least 6 trips to Ukraine, which is her prerogative.   However, it is worth asking why she made no trips to Ukraine before the war started.

I was hoping for better from Rep. Spartz

Tucker Carlson’s Latest Twitter Post:

Tucker Carlson is a prominent American talk show host, who has become a Putin “Fellow Traveler.”  The clip is from one of his recent shows.   I will admit that Tucker and I attended the same secondary school/boarding school (take your pick), although many years apart.   His “latest” really calls into question the level of education he received at the school, specifically his inability to dispassionately process information.   To view Tucker’s latest report on Ukraine, please click on the date and time (at the bottom of Ivana Stradner’s post).

Once again, it’s necessary to click on the date/time, at the bottom.   Of course, Garry Kasparov is also worth reading.

●        The increase in value is due to the energy crisis, which is escalating and is caused by the reduction of natural gas supply to the EU from Russia.

09:48 Financial Times⁩: China and Russia will hold joint exercises «Vostok» in the Far East of Russia

●        The exercise will begin on Tuesday.  Belarus and India will also join them.

●        Beijing notes that participation in the exercises «Vostok» has no relation to the current international and regional situation.

09:35 CNN⁩: The United States is convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decree to increase the Russian army "is unlikely to be a success".

●        According to the CNN interlocutor, any additional personnel that Russia will be able to gather by the end of the year will not be able to increase the overall combat power of the Russian army.

10:36: There was an official visit to Ukraine by a delegation of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic led by the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, Major General Karel Řehka.*

●        He noted that the example of Ukraine in the war with Russia is an invaluable experience for NATO countries.  The Czech Republic is one of the states that will continue to help Ukraine and its Armed Forces.

●        "The group of investigators will visit (Ukraine - ed.) under the banner of the International Criminal Court three more times during this and the next years," - the message states.

21:25 ⁩US National Security Council:  The White House received information about the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the south of Ukraine but does not want to comment on specific Ukrainian military operations.

●        Kirby noted that, regardless of the size, scale and scope of the latest counteroffensive, the Ukrainians ""have already affected Russia's military potential.

13:31 The Wall Street Journal⁩: Russia's invasion of Ukraine created opportunities for North Korea to strengthen ties with Moscow. North Korea is interested in purchasing spare parts produced in the Russian Federation and reconstructing its production facilities.

●        According to the publication, Pyongyang wants to send its workers to the territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions captured by the Russian Federation — this should give Kim Jong Un the much-needed income abroad.

●        Putin, for his part, promised to provide North Korea with modern weapons and equipment. Moscow could step up its cross-border food trade and use its seat on the UN Security Council to block any tougher sanctions against North Korea.

●        According to the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citizens of the Russian Federation own 41,351 real estate properties in Estonia. The majority of real estate owners from among Russian citizens live in Estonia with a residence permit, but approximately 12% of them, or 4,500 people, may lose access to their real estate due to the visa ban.

22:54 ⁩:  Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mykhailo Mishustin announced that in the next three months about 200 thousand Russians may become unemployed.

●        "It was about 200,000 or a little more people who could possibly lose their jobs in the next quarter," he said.

18:08 ⁩Reuters : In addition to Ericsson, the Finnish telecommunications equipment manufacturer Nokia will also completely cease operations on the territory of the Russian Federation.

12:58 Russian media⁩: The Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer Ericsson intends to close its representative office in Russia by the end of the year.

●        According to their information, on August 22, Ericsson's head office informed the Russian division about this. The company intends to reduce all employees, including those who provide technical support for equipment on networks of communication operators.

KHARKIV

11:14 Mayor of Kharkiv⁩: There was a fire in a residential building after the shelling in the centre of Kharkiv, and the number of casualties is increasing.

16:17 ⁩RMA: The Russian military has switched to new tactics in the Kharkiv region and is trying to advance in all directions of the region.

●        According to the head of the region, active fighting in the Kharkiv region continues in the north, north-east and south-east directions.
