U.S. Support for Ukraine – Declining?
Bohdan has produced the result of a poll, showing declining support for Ukraine among Americans. In my opinion, the result of this poll doesn’t project a complete picture of the opposition to continued U.S. support for Ukraine.
As postulated in previous emails, opposition to continued American funding for Ukraine likely consists of 2 factions. The first faction, and the most vocal, consists of those led by 3 Republican Presidential candidates, Trump, DeSantis and Ramaswamy, who favor immediate removal of support.
There is a second faction, much less vocal. This faction, perhaps including Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, faults the Biden Administration for not providing enough support for Ukraine. They are asking the question – if our support is not sufficient to ensure victory for Ukraine, then why bother? The Biden Administration is likely unwittingly contributing to the growth of this faction, and the growth of opposition to supporting Ukraine overall, by not giving Ukraine the weapons it has asked for when it was asking for it.
U.S. support for Ukraine remains strong, especially if one includes the second faction as actually favoring increased U.S. support.
PBS “Newshour” – Report on the Russian Volunteer Corps
Once again, by their most coverage of the War in Ukraine, the PBS “Newshour” has cast itself in the role as “useful idiots.”
Last Friday the PBS Newshour produced a segment on the “Russian Volunteer Corps,” a group of Russian dissidents who have launched incursions into Russian territory from Ukraine. Much is being made of statements made by its leader showing that the Russian Volunteer Corps. is a White Supremacist organization, and, by extension, Ukraine is endorsing white supremacist views.
This reminds me of that famous quote by Winston Churchill when he was asked about Great Britain’s support for Stalin during WW-II. Churchill said in response, “If Hitler invaded Hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons.” I wonder if it has occurred to the producers of the PBS Newshour that Ukraine is fighting for its existence as a country?
Since the War started many in the U.S., mostly on the Left, has accused Ukraine as harboring Nazi or racist sympathies. They are also useful idiots. They point to symbols worn by some members of the Azov Battalion as proof that Ukraine harbors people with Nazi sympathies, even though the Azov Battalion has never been a political organization, nor is it made up of those who may harbor Nazi sympathies. They also point to the unfortunate experiences of some African and S. Asian exchange students who were forced to evacuate Kharkiv at the beginning of the war, without their documents that were being kept in universities that had been destroyed by the Russians. They suggested that the poor treatment experienced by some exchange students suggested that Ukraine is a racist country, something that the Russians used to degrade support for Ukraine in S. Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
As I’ve experienced personally, unfortunately those who make these accusations about Ukraine, many with impressive credentials, are very manipulative, while at the same time being very ignorant. A dangerous combination, that often captures even the well-meaning, like the producers of the PBS “Newshour.”
“Let Ukraine Direct its Own Counteroffensive”/Gen. Jack Keane Wall St. Journal Op-Ed
A rejoinder to the pundits, mostly American, who think they know better than Gen. Zaluzhny and his Staff. As Gen. Keane states, “The U.S. should be focused on helping Ukraine fight the war the way it wants to fight, not chirping from the sidelines.” Some excerpts:
· “No one in the American military today has designed large-scale mechanized operations against a serious and capable enemy that is employing a comprehensive defense. The last time was the Metz campaign in France in 1944, led by Gen. George S. Patton.” Here is one account of what happened to Gen. Patton during the Metz Campaign.
· “Well-designed mechanized campaigns almost always advance on multiple axes rather than one. That is what American-led coalitions did against Iraq in 1991 and 2003. It’s how the Americans, Germans and Soviets fought in World War II. The reason is simple: Advancing along a single axis allows the defender to concentrate fully on stopping that one advance.”
· “The seizure of Melitopol on its own can’t win the war for Ukraine. The demands that Ukraine focus everything on that drive, combined with warnings that the West won’t restock Ukraine for future operations, suggest that at least some of those criticizing the Ukrainian offensive aren’t serious about helping Ukraine liberate all its territory. If that is the case, and if the Pentagon’s position is that it doesn’t expect Ukraine to liberate its people, it would be better to say so clearly than to make oblique and inaccurate attacks on the way Ukraine is fighting.” My bold face.
News From the Battlefield
The latest videos from Denys and “Reporting From Ukraine,” should be viewed together. The latter focuses on Robotyne. The Latest Denys shows where Ukrainian forces are, south of Robotyne, relative to the 2nd Russian defense line (1:40 into the video). He also illustrates the importance of tree lines (0:40 into the video), discussed previously in these emails. The tree lines play a similar role for Russian defenders as the hedgerows played, slowing down the Allied breakout after the Normandy landings.
