From Andrei – in casualties and Ukraine’s Battlefield Medical Assisttance
Andrei is a long-time recipient of these emails, and he’s a frequent contributor. As I’ve mentioned previously, Andrei is Ukrainian living in Kyiv, he has served as an officer in the Soviet Army in Angola, and he worked in Moscow for 2 U.S. private equity companies. Here’s what he has to say about the recent article in the New York Times about the large number of casualties on both sides and, especially, Ukraine’s ability to render emergency medical care to wounded Ukrainian (and Russian) soldiers. Based on what Andrei has to say, the New York Times article is yet another example of sloppy reporting from American newspapers of record, of which the New York Times is one –
“As for casualties. I think the Ukrainian figures cited in the New York Times (70,000 KIA) are correct: I've reached the same conclusion. I believe Russian KIA figure is at least 210,000 -- three times more than Ukrainian one. There are several explanations for it. First, Ukrainians fight smarter and value their lives. No "meat waves" there as it would mean dismissal of an indifferent commander.”
“Second, our medical services (whatever they say abroad) are pretty robust and effective. Most of front-line medics are dedicated volunteers. They have means to transport the wounded. By the way, American "grand dad's" M113s armored personnel carriers, (used last year in the liberation of Kherson and the Kharkiv Regions), are very useful for this particular purpose.”
“Most of the wounded are evacuated within the first hour. Front line soldiers get adequate medical training and have the same kit at their disposal as NATO soldiers. I judge by what people from the front tell me (and show me).”
“One major problem is that paramedics on the front line are not allowed to do blood transfusions -- following some Soviet times rule. However, this stupid rule is often ignored. Finally, Ukrainian military hospitals in the rear usually provide first rate service. Our doctors today are probably the most experienced in the world when it comes to battlefield traumas. The West supplies everything they need (thank you).”
“However, at least 50,000 of our wounded are amputees, and, alas, will be maimed for life. I can only guess how many amputees there are in Russia. This war's character means that up to 90% of casualties are caused by artillery fire, and those wounds are usually very bad. Standard body armor is often useless against high energy fragments.”
I can attest to Andrei’s account, by adding that I have been playing a very minor role in supplying consumables, items such as special sutures that are used to below the skin to close wounds. Those of you who have had Mohs surgery should be very familiar with these types of sutures. I have been helping Ukrainians who have been supporting Mobile Hospital No. 65 that has been operating in, now near, Bakhmut. I have been hearing similar accounts to the ones described by Andrei. Wounded are brought there direct from the battlefield, stabilized, and then sent to a hospital in the City of Dnipro for longer-term care and recovery. Doctors and attendants at the Mobile hospitals serve 7-day shifts, often without any sleep, then they go back to the hospital in Dnipro for 7 days.
The New York Times has reporters all over Ukraine. They should know better unless it’s their intent to report events in a negative light. After reading their accounts for almost the past 18 months, I’m beginning to wonder.
“U.S. Intelligence Says Ukraine Will Fail to Meet Offensive’s Key Goal”/Washington Post
Today is Saturday. What better day than to slam the coverage of the war by one of America’s newspapers of record?
The “key goal” that the Washington Post headline refers to is Melitopol, on the Sea of Azov. The loss of Melitopol will cut Russia off from the land entrance to Crimea.
When has “U.S. Intelligence” been right about Ukraine’s progress in the war? The only time that I can think of was before the war started, when CIA Director Burns went to Kyiv, where he laid out for Pres. Zelenskyy the initial Russian strikes, including attacking Hostomel Airfield on the first day of the war. Based on the assessment that Director Burns shared with Pres. Zalenskyy, the CIA concluded that Ukraine wouldn’t last 5 days. U.S. Intelligence has been consistently wrong ever since. As will be discussed later, there is probably a motive. Why should we believe that U.S. intelligence is correct this time?
America’s newspapers of record have no excuse. There are plenty of sources that provide detailed analyses, such as the Institute for the Study of War and Ukrainian outlets such as Ukrainska Pravda?
Interview of Gen. Ben Hodges (Ret.) by TV Rain
TV Rain was formally a Russian independent TV news outlet. They were forced out of Russia, and they now report from both Latvia and the Netherlands. LTGEN. Hodges was formally Commander U.S. Army in Europe.
Please go to 9:00 into the interview. Hodges alleges that the United States, led by the “Ditherer-in-Chief,” cannot state that they want Ukraine to win. Hodges said that if the U.S. wanted Ukraine to win, and say it publicly, then all the excuses like concerns about Ukraine using ATACMS against Russian targets (something to which Ukraine has already agreed not to do), long training time for training Ukrainian pilots on F-16s would, in Hodges’ words, “just go away.” The interviewer then asked Hodges the obvious question, “Why can’t the U.S. muster up the courage and say it; what’s the problem?” In response to the interviewer’s question, Gen. Hodges gave 3 reasons why the U.S. cannot seem to “muster up the courage.”
1. Continuing concern about Russia escalating and using tactical nuclear weapons.
2. “There are too many people in this Administration (Biden), and indeed in many capitals, who just cannot believe that Russia can be defeated.”
3. “They (the Administration) don’t know what to do if the Russian regime collapses.”
Concerning No. 3, Gen. Hodges added that there is the possibility that the Chinese are telling the Administration “do not let this happen.” “This” being the collapse of the Putin regime.
I completely agree with Gen. Hodges’ assessment of why the “Ditherer-in-Chief” cannot “muster the courage” to say clearly that he wants Ukraine to win. People can criticize me for perhaps being too tough on the “Ditherer-in-Chief,’ but I say that I’m allowed. 5 members of my extended family are now fighting for their Country, plus friends and children of friends. The more dithering, the better chance that one of them will be killed. One member of my extended family is already in the hospital, recovering from wounds.
Ukrainian activist Daria Kaleniuk recently asked U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan essentially the same question, at the recent NATO meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania. Jake Sullivan’s facial expression when Daria was asking him the question speaks volumes. The word “victory” is nowhere to be found in Sullivan’s answer.
Why is Ukraine Launching Drone Attacks on Moscow?
In a weekly Zoom call that I’m part of, a college classmate asked me this question. I gave a lame answer which I won’t repeat. Later, I thought about it some more. The reason that Ukraine is launching drone attacks on Moscow is the same reason that the United States launched a bombing attack on Tokyo, in April 1942. It was known as the Doolittle Raid, after the mission commander. The reason was to bring the war to the Japanese people, who had heretofore been immune from attack. Ukraine is doing the same, this time to the Russian people.
“Abandoning Hope on Russia Sanctions? Don’t”/By Timothy Ash – CEPA
Some excerpts:
· “A commonly heard complaint for much of the period since Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 (and indeed, since its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and invasion of Donbas that same year), is that Western sanctions are not working. This is not just defeatist, it’s also economically illiterate. As we have seen time and again, sanctions work but they are slow and — like water running downhill — the route they take is unpredictable.”
· “Central bank reserves at the outset of the invasion were thus close to $600bn, while the country was running current account and fiscal surpluses, and public debt was less than 20% of GDP. These buffers have helped sustain the Russian economy through 18months of war and sanctions. But they are now running out. “
· I think we are now finally beginning to see the impact of the war and sanctions bite, something revealed when the ruble crashed through the 100 level against the US dollar in mid-August. Now, Kremlin apologists might argue that all this was engineered by the central bank and the finance ministry to boost the ruble value of oil revenues, and thereby moderating the budget deficit.
· Capital flight — which shows many Russian voting with their feet or wallets — meanwhile, continued apace, as seen in data of partner countries like Turkey, the UAE, and those in Central Asia and Transcaucasia. At least $60bn has left since the full-scale invasion, and probably much more. Sanctions meanwhile froze at least half the central bank’s reserves of $600bn (that were unwisely held in foreign jurisdictions), and much of the balance is now thought to consist of illiquid or soft currency reserves, which are hard to trade. Its ability to defend the ruble is hence impaired and that has been reflected in the weaker ruble.
· Eventually, one day, the grinding of the Russian economy will cause it to crack and perhaps shatter. We cannot know when that moment might come, but we do know it increases the difficult choices facing the Putin regime. That is good news.
News From the Battlefield
Ukrainians Break Through Minefields Towards Tokmak/Ukrainska Pravda - I wonder why this news didn’t make it into the pages of the Washington Post? It was reported by CBS News. Ukraine has now reached Russia’s defense ring surrounding the city. Liberating Tokmak will put all the Russian supply lines in Southern Ukraine within artillery range.
“Reporting From Ukraine” covers Ukrainian successes south of Bakhmut, where Ukraine destroyed several top of the line T-90 Russian tanks, some infantry fighting vehicles and a number of soldiers.
