The Amnesty International (AI) Report
The AI Report alleges that Ukraine’s Armed Forces have un-necessarily put Ukrainian civilians in danger from Russian Assaults. This is a very well-reasoned assessment of the AI Report, by Wayne Jordash and Anna Mykytenko that recently appeared in Ukrainska Pravda. Jordash is the Managing Partner of the Global Rights Compliance Law Firm. It is worth the time to read. Many of AI’s country offices, including Ukraine’s have disavowed the report and several individuals have resigned in protest.
Under Pres. Zelenskyy, someone who knows something about media, Ukraine seems to be pushing back against many of the tropes directed at Ukraine, of which the AI Report is only the latest. Other examples include the allegations that, based on several unfortunate instances involving African and S. Asian exchange students studying in universities in Kharkiv, that Ukraine is a systemically racist country, which has no basis in fact, and the ever-present trope that the insignia worn by some members of the Azov Battalion proves that Ukraine is full of Nazis, recited in a Harvard College Class of 1969 Zoom call by one of my classmates, during a discussion I was hosting about Ukraine.
Regarding Africa, a major buyer of Ukrainian commodities, Ukraine should consider sending a delegation to major African buyers, including Egypt and Ethiopia among others. Ethiopia is especially important for two reasons: many regions of Ethiopia are experiencing hunger and rely on shipments of Ukrainian grain; like Ukraine, Ethiopia is an Eastern Orthodox country.
Ukraine needs to remind African countries that there has never been an attempt, by any African country against another, to take over territory of a neighboring country, has Russia has consistently done, and not only in Ukraine. Ukraine can start its outreach to African countries by reciting the speech by Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN, given at a meeting of the UN Security Council at the beginning of the war.
One of the lessons of this war is that Ukraine cannot simply assume that everyone will automatically take their side.
Ukraine Freedom Fund (UFF)
Founded by Andy Bain, someone whom I have known for many years, UFF is engaged in providing support primarily for the Ukrainian military. Its focus is on logistics and healthcare, an example of the latter being their support for the rehabilitation of one of Ukraine’s military hospitals. Located north of Kyiv, the hospital was heavily damaged by the initial Russian assault against Kyiv.

The area has been on the front line of the Donbas Line of Control since 2014. The Russian assault likely aims to secure the M04 highway, the main approach to Donetsk from the west.

● Russian forces may be reprioritizing advances in northeastern Donetsk region to draw attention from Ukrainian counter offensive actions in Southern Ukraine.
● Military experts believe that Russian forces had seemingly scaled back offensive actions east of Siversk and conducted sporadic and limited ground attacks since August 6. However, since August 11, Russian forces have increased the number of limited ground attacks in the Siversk area.
● Russia continues to struggle for compensation of large losses of personnel. Russian authorities have reportedly placed recruits with no experience into positions as commanding officers at the company level or higher, failed to provide sufficient food, ammunition, or cigarettes to soldiers
● Russian forces will likely lose the ability to defend themselves against even limited Ukrainian counterattacks in the Kherson region. Due to damage to vital bridges in Kherson, Russian forces cannot support large-scale mechanized operations. As a result, the violation of reliable terrestrial communication lines will lead to the fact that they will not be able to fight back, analysts believe.

● In the direction of Avdiivka, the Russians carried out an assault in the direction of Krasnohorivka and Pisky but had no success, so withdrew. The fighting continues in the area of the Pervomaisk settlement.
● In the Novopavlivsk and Zaporizhzhia directions, the Russians attempted to conduct reconnaissance by combat in the area of the settlement of Prechyativka, but after a firefight, they withdrew. The Russians are advancing in the vicinity of Pavlivka; the fighting continues.
