An investigation by Bellingcat into accusations of lying by Russian authorities to Russian conscripts, and letters by both individual conscripts and their families to Russian authorities.
Times Radio
Is Russia Running out of Conscripts? (Angela Stent) – Angela Stent is a professor at Georgetown University and one of our foremost Russia experts.
Crimea Base Attack (Gen. Chip Chapman) – Chapman says that the base attack has been a huge psychological blow to the Kremlin. Because the base was in close proximity to one of Crimea’s primary tourist areas and, after the attack, many tourists have fled back to Russia, it will likely be difficult for the Kremlin to contain the news of what happened from the Russian Public at large.
Why Russian weapons keep failing? (Larisa Brown, London Times Defense Editor) – Among other things, she says the following (based on an evaluation by the AFU):
· Only 33% of Russian missiles hit their intended target.
· The Russians claim that their “Alligator” attack helicopter (comparable to our “Cobra” helicopter) can withstand hits from 12.7mm ammunition, whereas Ukraine claims that they have shot down the Alligator using 7.62mm ammunition.
The Latest Denys
In his latest report Denys discusses the following:
· The Russian assault on Bakhmut, largely undertaken by troops from the Wagner Group, seems to be petering out.
· Russia is making a major effort to break Ukrainian defense lines in front of Donetsk City, with fighting around the Town of Pisky,, located around 5 mi from Central Donetsk City. Without success here Russia will be unable to claim all of Donbas.
· Ukraine hit the rail/road bridge at Nova Khakovka, the last remaining usable bridge across the Dnieper River that is available to Russian forces on the Right Bank of the Dnieper.
Denys has been predicting a Russian attack from the Right Bank toward Mykolaiv, but it is hard to see how this attack can be sustained, given the recent loss of the Saky Airbase in Crimea and the loss of the Dnieper bridges.
How the Soldiers Live and Are Supplied (Ukraine vs. Russia)
A couple of days ago I was involved in a discussion with a Ukrainian expert who is visiting the U.S., over comparing how Ukrainian solders maintain their quarters in the field vs. Russians. Ultimately, this speaks volumes about the ability of Ukrainian soldiers to sustain themselves in the field. The person I was speaking with pointed out the following:
· AFU soldiers keep their quarters clean.
· Food is prepared in a well-organized fashion.
· AFU is supplied not only by AFU logistics, but also by civilian volunteers many of whm take substantial risks, and by local villagers.
· If Bucha is any evidence, Russian soldiers live in quarters that they don’t clean (presence of garbage and even human feces).
· Russian soldiers must be resupplied solely by extremely unreliable Russian logistics.
· The Meduza.io Report, mentioned above, states that often Russian conscripts are given dry rations, one to every two soldiers.
