Ironies
Yesterday, on the same day that former President Donald Trump surrendered to New York City authorities, marking the first time in U.S. history that a serving or former President of the United States has been criminally indicted, the following 2 events took place:
· The Biden Administration announced a $2.6 billion defense package for Ukraine. You can see more details at 16:40 into the “Latest Denys.” The package is almost entirely devoted to equipment and consumables that Ukraine will need for offensive operations, including more ammunition, fuel trucks and bridging equipment.
· Finland formally joined the NATO Alliance as its 31st Member, effectively doubling NATO’s border with the Russian Federation.
The irony is that former President Trump wants to withdraw support for Ukraine and, at the time he was President, Trump continually expressed his skepticism of the efficacy of NATO. Therefore, these events constitute 2 thumbs in Trumps eye and, to a somewhat lesser degree, two thumbs in the eye of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump’s leading opponent for the 2024 Republican nomination for President.
News From the Battlefield
Bakhmut - At a time when many of the pundits are focusing on whether Ukraine will withdraw from Bakhmut, “Reporting From Ukraine” describes how Ukrainian forces are turning Central Bakhmut into a killing zone. From looking at the tactical map in the video, Ukraine appears to be doing the following in Bakhmut:
· Holding positions on the flanks north and south of Bakhmut, thereby funneling the Wagners into Central Bakhmut from the east, where they are met by Ukrainian snipers firing from the buildings.
· Bringing up highly accurate Western artillery to hit Russian artillery, that has had to move closer to Central Bakhmut, to avoid hitting their own forces that are arrayed in front of them. Russian artillery moving closer to Bakhmut makes Russian artillery easier to hit by Western artillery able to fire at a longer range.
Other than the snipers, it doesn’t seem as if Ukraine has that many forces left in Central Bakhmut. However, Ukraine still has control over the supply roads. Most of Ukraine’s forces have likely moved out of Central Bakhmut, instead assuming positions on the flanks north and south of Bakhmut.
The Latest Denys, at 1:55 into his video, reports that Ukraine is launching probing attacks south of Bakhmut. Whether this is a precursor to a larger Ukrainian offensive is unclear.
Private Military Contractors – At 5 minutes into the Latest Denys’ video, he shares the latest update from British Intelligence. The update suggests that Russia’s use of private military contractors (PMCs) is increasing. According to Denys, even Russian Defense Minister Shoigu, and the Head of Government in Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, are establishing their own PMCs. The British seem to suggest two reasons why there is increasing Russian reliance on PMCs:
· PMCs are more flexible, in terms of pay and who can join, including prisoners.
· To reduce the influence of Evgeniy Prigozhin, the Founder of the Wagner Group.
If the rumors are true, that Shoigu is establishing his own PMC, it would seem that it would create a conflict of interest with his role as Defense Minister and Head of the regular Russian Army.
Aksyonov, aka “The Goblin,” has had a very colorful career, including alleged links to organized crime. More information about Aksyonov can be found here. Four years before being “elected” Head of Russian controlled Crimea, Aksyonov’s Party only received 4% of the vote in the parliamentary elections held in the former Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
If Ukraine is able to launch an offensive toward the south, and they manage to cut off Russian land access to Crimea, would Aksyonov and his PMC become primarily responsible for defending Crimea? Would this give Putin some deniability if Russia loses control of Crimea, saying that it was all the fault of Aksyonov?
