Writings on the Wall
Meduza is a daily newsletter that was originally based in Russia but, because they were closed down by Russia because of the war, is now based in Riga, Latvia. This is one of Meduza’s recent posts, consisting of a series of writings by children, on the wall of a room in Priazovskyi State Technical University in Mariupol, where the children were sheltering from Russian bombing and artillery attacks that have destroyed Mariupol. Meduza has included an English translation of the writings.
To learn more about Meduza please listen to this podcast, called “Next Year in Moscow, Episode 6,” produced by the Economist. It contains an interview with one of the Founders of Meduza, along with interviews with the Founder of Novaya Gazeta and TV Rain. All 3 organizations have been shut down in Russia. To continue their work, all 3 were forced to move to the West.
“Next Year in Moscow” is hosted by Arkady Ostrovsky, The Economist’s lead Russia correspondent. On the podcast, he interviews individual Russians, and Russian organizations, that have been forced to leave Russia since the start of Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine. I’m a big fan. I listen to him while in the gym.
News From the Battlefield
Russian persecution of churches in temporarily occupied Ukraine - The Institute of the Study of War (ISW) recently published an extensive analysis of Russian persecution of churches in the temporarily occupied portions of Ukraine. The persecution included not just the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) but other faiths as well, including Catholics, Protestants of all denominations, especially Baptists and Mennonites, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Muslims. The analysis contains extensive maps, showing where the persecutions took place, and persecutions consisted of expropriation, property destruction, detention, harassment of believers, and murder of priests.
As the article states, “Russia continues to weaponize religion in an effort to discredit Ukraine in the international arena and is using information operations about religion to advance military objectives despite itself committing gross violations of religious freedom in occupied Ukraine.” In the United States, Russia’s most significant mouthpiece in this effort is Tucker Carlson who, on his show “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” never tires of accusing Ukraine of religious persecution, when Ukraine detains a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) who had been collaborating with Russia, up to an including providing the Russian Army with targeting information, or the legal transfer, via votes of parish members, of UOC-MP churches to the OCU.
ISW states that Russia’s persecution of the OCU and other faiths in occupied Ukraine is a matter of State policy, conducted on behalf of the UOC-MP, which is an organ of the Russian State.
As the article states, “Moscow’s religious persecution campaign seeks to eradicate the (OCU), which Moscow views as schismatic despite the decision by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, in 2019 granting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church its independence from the Moscow Patriarchate. In addition – some examples from the article:
· Russian occupation officials are systematically seizing UOC property to transfer to the Moscow Patriarchate and are eliminating worship in the Ukrainian language.
· Six Russian FSB (successor to the KGB) agents raided an OCU church in Melitopol, detained and deported its priest for conducting the liturgy in the Ukrainian language, and then closed the church in November 2022.
· Russian authorities have converted several OCU churches in occupied Ukraine to the Moscow Patriarchate.
· Russian forces captured two Ukrainian Greek Catholic priests in Berdyansk in November 2022, deporting them and effectively closing the main Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Melitopol in December 2022.
· the most common victims of Russian religious persecution after Ukrainian Orthodox are Protestants, particularly evangelical Baptists. Protestants of all denominations were the victims of 34 percent of the reported persecution events that ISW observed. Baptists made up 13 percent of victims – the largest single group after Ukrainian Orthodox.
· Russian troops commandeered a Kherson-based Ukrainian evangelical Baptist educational institute from March - November 2022 and established a garrison and crematorium there to cremate killed Russian soldiers.[27] The institute’s rector stated that Russian soldiers repeatedly harassed the Baptists, calling them “American spies,” “sectarians,” and “enemies of the Russian Orthodox people.”[28] One Russian officer reportedly told workers at the institute, “Evangelical believers like you should be completely destroyed…a simple shooting will be too easy for you. You need to be buried alive,”
· Putin consistently presents Russia as the defender of traditional “Christian values” that also supports Orthodox, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism religions. The Kremlin uses this information operation to accuse Ukraine of religious intolerance towards the Moscow Patriarchate and gain favor with religious communities worldwide. Author’s Note – this includes useful idiots like Tucker Carlson),
“Reporting From Ukraine” – According to his latest, the Wagner Group is on its last legs in Bakhmut. The Wagners are now confined to the center of the City, where they continue to take substantial losses, and they are supplanted by various units of regular Russian forces that have proven to be less capable than the Wagners. Ukrainian troops continued to hold the flanks north and south of Bakhumt, a defense line that runs along the railroad running north and south bisecting the city, and the supply roads continue to be open, including at least 1 supply tunnel.
